UK Userbox

Hi Hayter, this might be a stupid question (and if it is, forgive me, I'm quite new), but why can't we have two userboxes, one saying "lives in" and one saying "come from", each linking to a different category? ConDemTalk 02:25, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

We can, and we do. There was already {{User British}} before but some people didn't like that because they weren't overly proud of where they came from. So when this discussion began, I created {{User British2}}, which shares the same style as the one under vote, but is designed to indicate nationality rather than location, as I believe this one is. The point of contention is whether {{User United Kingdom}} is a location or nationality indicator. I believe the former, but if it is the latter, then {{User British2}} is redundant and should be deleted.
Don't worry about asking such questions - most established users on WP remember being new themselves. - Hayter 10:53, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

UK userbox vote

Hi there Keith! I noticed that you voted on the issue of what the UK userbox should say. I wondered if you might like to explain your vote briefly on the page, as "Signatures without included reasoning are liable to recieve a lower vote weight (i.e. their vote may not be fully credited during counting)" according to the poll authors. ConDemTalk 21:39, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Sorted, thanks. theKeith   21:50, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Your change of vote

I was just wondering why you changed your vote on this. While you may have changed your userbox to a newly created one, the vote is actually about the one already in existance .. if you follow me. There is also userboxes to denote nationality and people who are ex-pats not living in the UK.

I'm moving to the USA this year. I have been using this UK userbox to denote the fact that I live in the UK, and using another userbox to denote my nationality. When I move to the USA though, I will change the userbox to reflect my new status. The name and category and format all conform to the other boxes listed in the location page - it was merely the text that needed refining.. as what has happened with all the regional boxes (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) without protest. All of them now read "lives in", except for the UK userbox. --Mal 08:08, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Left you a reply on my talk page mate. --Mal 13:14, 14 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

And another reply. Can I assume you have my talk page on your watchlist for the minute? --Mal 11:51, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Although I feel everyone is acting in good faith, may I ask you to make your vote based on evidence presented in the poll page or in public talk pages (ie. the templates talk page). Under the terms of this poll which I am attempting to moderate, users are not to attempt to sway someones vote, but each voter is to try and make their own informed decision. Such private communication can result in a bias result or partially informed voters. I am only notifing you, and you are not under any obligation to change anything (you vote is back where it was anyway!). Since some feel the creation of the resident template was disruptive in itself (ie, it swayed your vote and possibly others), it is probably best if your vote doesn't change again anyway. Just wanted to inform you (to create a more open discussion). I do however hope you understand my consern. There is certainly no blame connected with you (or anyone infact), I am merely trying to insure good faith is retained. Thanks! Ian13/talk 19:52, 15 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Just an example of what I what I mean:

Welcome to Esperanza

Welcome, Jumbling/Archive 2, to Esperanza, the Wikipedia member association! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of JoanneB, FireFox and Titoxd. The next set of elections are right now.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, please see the IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

Re: Squidward's house merge

Hi there, Condem! After looking at those pages, I also feel it would be better to remerge Squidward's house and Spongebob's Pineapple with Bikini_Bottom#Homes. Let's go for it! I'll see what I can do for now. -- RattleMan 22:16, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

OK, I've merged both into Bikini_Bottom#Homes, which I think is the best move. Tell me what you think! -- RattleMan 22:36, 17 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Question

Hey there. Primary colours of disgracefulness was the first page I've nominated for deletion, and after briefly perusing Wikipedia:Deletion I couldn't figure out whether or not I could immediately nominate it for speedy deletion (which I thought it merited)...there wasn't a nice little three step process for speedy deleting something. Could you clear this up? Thanks! Keppa 01:12, 21 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Hello Condem

As you are the person who provided Keppa with instructions on page deletions, I ask you to read this exchange http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Keppa&action=edit&section=3 with an eye toward providing more explicit guidance on when to delete and when not to delete. Keppa's over-enthusiastic use of deletion cost me time. Now Keppa is demanding more of my time, specifically that I stop and explain to Keppa what Keppa did. Clearly Keppa does not understand the process.

As Keppa's tutor on this subject, perhaps you will provide more detailed instruction --a caveat perhaps?---so Keppa does not continue to demand attention after being too quick to delete pages that are being worked on. As a volunteer, like you, with limited time to give, I appreciate any effort you can spare in resolving this. Thanks. skywriter 11:44, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

This would indeed be useful of you if Keppa had done what Skywriter alleges. I read through all of the material MoP provided me with and while I'm obviously inexperienced with deletion I believe I am going about it in an acceptable way. What's more, I didn't delete the page that Skywriter claims I did. Skywriter is unable to provide proof that I did, he/she just keeps making these spurious claims and getting more and more upset as I try to figure out what he/she is talking about. Sorry to waste your time. Keppa 17:55, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for responding. I appreciate your help! Keppa 18:56, 22 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Gen Eis

Thanks for your note. I realise it may have been a bit harsh, but for some users, anything less doesn't really work. I don't know about this user, but since he's even tried running for admin before I'm not sure just saying "don't use it" would work. His warning stands, although if you can think of a better way to phrase it, feel free to change my comments (and link to this diff in the edit summary, so others understand the changing of the comment). NSLE (T+C) at 01:46 UTC (2006-04-25)

Go ahead, although the point of the italics was to make sure he didn't miss it, as I'm not going to take ignorance as an excuse if/when I do need to block him. NSLE (T+C) at 01:54 UTC (2006-04-25)

Thanks! Recently I reverted some vandal edits to Mattie Stepanek. I warned the IP on the talk page, but he's changed the messages to say something else. What should I do? The user is User:24.54.42.123. He also removed a PROD notice I put up recently, without explanation, on Paul Phoenix (singer). Should I put it back up? ConDemTalk 01:17, 2 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Esperanza Newsletter, Issue #3

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.
The Stressbusters are a subset of Esperanza aiming to investigate the causes of stress. New eyes on the situation are always welcome!
Note from the editor
As always, MiszaBot handled this delivery. Thank you! Also, congratulations go to Pschemp, Titoxd and Freakofnurture for being elected in the last elections! An Esperanzial May to all of the readership!
  1. Posting logs of the Esperanza IRC channel are explicitly banned anywhere. Violation of this rule results in deletion and a ban from the channel.
  2. A disclaimer is going to be added to the Esperanza main page. We are humans and, as such, are imperfect.
  3. Various revisions have been made to the Code of Conduct. Please see them, as the proposal is ready to be ratified by the community and enacted. All members will members to have to re-confirm their membership after accepting the Code of Conduct.
  4. Referendums are to be held on whether terms of AC members should be lengthened and whether we should abolish votes full stop.
  5. Admin Coaching reform is agreed upon.
