Hi. In Muséum de Toulouse, you recently added a link to the disambiguation page Red howler monkey (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Pinned vs. live

edit

You seem to think pinned specimens of butterflies from the museum in Toulouse are the best choices for taxobox images. Why should that be? Can you imagine the opposition to using pictures of stuffed birds or mammals for articles on living species. They would be reverted immediately. I believe the same should occur for butterflies. Please don't use the quality reason as you removed a excellent picture for the White Peacock and a "featured picture" for the Dirce Beauty. So your arguments about quality are not strong. I have no objection to using pinned specimens when there are no pictures of live specimens, or the live specimens are of poor quality (as was the 2nd picture in Biblis hyperia. I think we should bring this discussion to the project talk page for more opinions. By the way I do appreciate your contributions to the butterfly articles. Keep up the good work. Pinned specimens vs live

edit

I appreciate your concerns, but Wikipedia is not a scientfic publication. It is for the common person. As I said in a previous note other animal articles would never prefer dead specimen pictures in favour of pictures of live ones. I also don't agree that the pinned specimens are better for identifying species. They are better for distinguished other pinned specimens but are less useful for identfying pictures of living specimens. For one thing, the poses adopted by the living are almost never similar to the pinned dead specimens. Furthermore, the colours are often quite faded once the specimen is pinned and displayed ina museum for long periods.

On the Lepidoptera project page some guidelines are presented for the use of media and images. There is no mention of using pinned specimens but it does mention "Butterflies and moths involved in activitites such as nectar-sipping, mud-puddling, mating, basking, migration, etc." Nor does it say that the nominate specimens be preferred over any other subspecies. In fact it implies that both should be included. See [of media and level of detail].

I notice that you have added many pictures of pinned speciemens to many moth and butterfly articles. In many cases these were the only pictures in the article. I encourage you to continue. You should also continue to replace poor pictures with better ones. But I believe that pictures of live specimens should always have precedence to the images of pinned ones.

Salut Dger (talk) 15:43, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I do agree that the pinned specimens be included. That is not a problem. I just believe they should not take precedence to live specimen pictures. That is why I put them in a gallery. Keep up the good work. Dger (talk) 21:07, 28 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Making cropped images from Commons

edit

Hi, I saw that you reverted my use of a cropped version of an image on Commons. This is a normal (and lawful) thing to do, and there is good reason to do it in big articles which may need to use many images - there is a strong trade-off between making the useful parts of images as large as possible, and saving screen space, so cropping whitespace is a productive and constructive activity. I note also that this particular image was a featured image, so I would obviously try not to modify such an image directly. The solution is to crop the image and save it as a cropped version; and the crop tool automatically makes a link between the original image and the cropped one, which is surely good practice. I'm therefore a bit surprised that you should have any objection to this process, and would be pleased to understand why that might be. With all best wishes, Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:12, 7 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Your idea of reducing the frame is good. But usually just ask the author to do so. Which would have avoided cutting the scale. I corrected. The new version replaces the old one and a deletion request will be filed. It is easier to cooperate with a message. In any case your idea is good. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 08:38, 7 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
As you see, every time you modify the image, its quality deteriorates. You do not have access to the RAW file. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 08:59, 7 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks for the reply. Actually, the crop tool has a lossless mode, and I'd normally rely on that, but in this instance I needed also to tidy up the image to remove part of the scale bar from the cropped version. Asking authors is in many (most?) cases a waste of time, as people often don't stay on Commons to read messages; and there is here a perfectly good case for having a bigger image with a scale bar (on the right) and a smaller one without the scale bar, for different usages, so I would vigorously oppose deletion in this case! Hi, one more request - the cladogram needs a cropped version of File:Anthrenus verbasci MHNT Fronton Side view.jpg. I'd do it losslessly myself using the crop tool but ... I can do that if you're ok with it, otherwise, could you crop it for me. Many thanks for your help. Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:00, 9 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia.

When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Edit summary (Briefly describe your changes)

I noticed your recent edit to Manduca sexta does not have an edit summary. Please be sure to provide a summary of every edit you make, even if you write only the briefest of summaries. The summaries are very helpful to people browsing an article's history.

Edit summary content is visible in:

Please use the edit summary to explain your reasoning for the edit, or a summary of what the edit changes. You can give yourself a reminder to add an edit summary by setting Preferences → Editing →   Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary. Also, please try to consolidate your edits, at least at the section level, to avoid cluttering the page's edit history; this makes it easier for your fellow editors to understand your intentions, and makes it easier for those monitoring activity on the article. The show preview button (beside the "publish changes" button) is helpful for this; use it to view your changes incrementally before finally saving the page once you're satisfied with your edits. • Hello.

Your image does not correctly illustrate the species purple is missing for the reference species; otherwise it is an Alba form. The photographed specimen is validated by a competent authority: the MHNT. For the rest there are competitions internal to Commons; here the image is labeled, yours is not. I remain attentive to your questions. --Archaeodontosaurus (talk) 14:23, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Purple is not missing, take another look. And alba form has no pattern, only white and yellow colours. Imo the lead image should have the best quality as possible. Your image is clearly blurry at full size and therefore not the best choice for Wikipedia projects. --Ivar (talk) 15:22, 2 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

The greenbottle blue tarantula (Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens) is a species of spider in the tarantula family, Theraphosidae. It is native to the Paraguaná Peninsula in the Venezuelan state of Falcón. The spider features metallic blue legs and a blue-green carapace, which give it its name. They are very active and fast-growing animals that are particularly attractive to hobbyists. This mounted greenbottle blue tarantula female is part of the collection of the Muséum de Toulouse in France.
