Black Sunday (Bronx, FDNY)
Black Sunday (Bronx, FDNY) A horrific day in the history of the FDNY. A tenement fire on a freezing January 23, 2005 where two (2) firemen were killed and four (4) were forced to jump windows in a tragedy that should have been prevented. Sunday morning at 7:59am 911 received a fire call at East 178th Street off the Grand Concourse in the South Bronx. FDNY Firefighters soon found themselves in a smoke-filled maze of illegally divided apartments.
A January blizzard had shut down the city and this day there were 45-mile an hour wind gusts fueling the flames like gasoline on an open fire. More than a foot of unplowed snow still covered the streets. Ladder 27 crew spent six (6) minutes to make just ten (10) city blocks. Five (5) fire companies had sent five (5) trucks to the blaze. Unfortunately, the closest hydrant was frozen due to the 17 degree temperature and the hoses were also having problems. A call went out "We got no water."
The fire highlighted the dangers posed by illegally converted apartments. But it also forced the NY department to return to its practice of giving firefighters safety ropes to escape, a month after the city report was released. FDNY stopped supplying safety ropes in 2000 ostensibly because they were too bulky but some believe it was a cost factor. Rudy Guliani was NY's Mayor at the time and was replaced by Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2002. Bronx district attorney charged three (3) people, the landlord and two tenants, for making alterations in the building.
Lt. Curtis Meyran of Battalion 26 and John Bellew (posthumously promoted to lieutenant) of Ladder 27 died in the Black Sunday fires and firefighter Richard Sclafani was killed fighting a fire in Brooklyn Just hours later. For the first time, FDNY lost three (3) firefighters on the same day in two (2) different fires.
The two Bronx firefighters’ funerals were full-scale FDNY tributes—one in Pearl River, the other on Long Island, each drawing more than 8,000 people.
Their tragic story has been used over the years to help train countless firefighters all over the country.
Annually, friends, family and colleagues gather on a January Saturday for an 11 a.m. memorial Mass and service at Brooklyn Engine 46 and Bronx Ladder 27 to pay homage to the brave trio.
