I propose merging The Rice People into "Rice (1957 film)". I started writing the latter and then realized that the Japanese title is matched to another article about the film with the same Japanese name, same year, and the same cast. Compare the Cannes festival list with this article from the Los Angeles Mirror. Additionally, I am not sure where the "The Rice People" title came from since the newspaper articles I see refer to the film as "Rice". WhisperToMe (talk) 23:51, 4 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

BTW it is possible the Los Angeles Mirror misidentified the director, since JAwiki states Tadashi Imai was the director and Shunichiro Nakao [ja] as the cinematographer WhisperToMe (talk) 00:07, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I wonder how/when the film was released with the English title The Rice People. I searched Newspapers.com but couldn't find a source of that title? Check for sources before 2009 to avoid citeogenesis. WhisperToMe (talk) 05:38, 5 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
IMDb also has Tadashi Amai as the director, and Seigo Shindo as the art director. [1] It does, for the record, list The Rice People as an English title under the alternate titles section, but is currently located at Rice as the main page title — but one possibility here may also be that the film had a different English title in the UK and Europe than it did in the United States (which is a fairly common issue with foreign-language films.) That's a good point! I checked the British Newspaper Archive and Newspapers.com but haven't had luck in finding an official announcement of a British or other adaptation under that title. WhisperToMe (talk) 00:07, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
I found a 2005 source referring to The Rice People:
  • Ariyasena Jayasekera Gunawardene; Lesṭar Jēms Pīris; Prasad Pereira (2005). LJP, Lester James Peries Life and Work. p. 98.
Now the only question is which company released it under that title and where, or if this English title came from somewhere else. The film was officially released in the United States as Rice so I personally gravitate more towards that title.
