Talk:List of battery electric vehicles

Latest comment: 3 months ago by 68.134.192.6 in topic What battery is used in each electric car?

prototype vehicles should be moved to "electric car"

edit

There is a new section for prototypes under Electric Car: Electric_car#Prototype_electric_cars. It's for electric cars currently under development. Since this list is about production EVs, the prototypes (cars anyway, but I think they all are) should be moved there.Facts707 (talk) 13:09, 8 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

deletion proposal

edit

There appears to be no support for the deletion proposal on this page. I am strongly against this proposal. At a time when interest in electric cars is very high, but availability is very low, it is very instructive to be able to see what manufacturers are making or planning. I do not agree that the article is a directory. New Thought 18:50, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree - this page should not be removed. This is a useful and important list. Fresheneesz 03:06, 29 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

This page should be split into vehicles that are currently in production, planned for production, or have been discontinued. Fresheneesz 18:57, 29 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I think this page should be deleted. Wikipedia is not about lists. The category function should suffice. See wp:not .   Daniel.Cardenas 19:03, 23 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I found this page useful and i would like it to be kept. Raigedas 11:03, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Here is a very well put together current list on EVs that you can actually buy http://www.personal.leeds.ac.uk/~pscbrwm/cbev/buy.html

Some of the cars listed as No Longer In Production should in fact be reclassified as Prototypes that never went into Production - for example the T Zero and the Wrightspeed X1. This list is likely to grow as various startups sink again. (Phoenix Motors)? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.219.66.165 (talk) 20:00, 17 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Mess of defunct lists

edit

Today (May 2019) there exist five lists in English language wikipedia that largely overlap and all of which are far from a complete, updated state:

List of hybrid vehicles (hybrid electric vehicles equipped with both combustion engines and electric drivetrains)

List of modern production plug-in electric vehicles (with pure battery vehicles, but also plug-ins, also some motorcycles and small trucks)

List of production battery electric vehicles (mainly a list with few notes on each car, also some non-car entries like motorcyles and light trucks, only purely electric vehicles)

List of production battery electric vehicles (table)

List of electric cars currently available (table with some details of cars, but lower number of entries)

List of modern production plug-in electric vehicles available in the United States (only cars, plug-in hybrids and purely electric cars)

There is also the List of electric scooters (German Wikipedia).

Some of these lists miss small size electric vehicles like the Renault Twizy. It may be easy to set ups such lists at some point in time by copying from other assembled data, but it is more difficult to keep them updated. For comparison: There is nothing like a “list of fossil fuel cars” for all conventional cars combined.

I would suggest to freeze most of all of the lists, unless someone would like to merge them into one list each for plug-in hybrids and pure electric cars. And even such list could be frozen as electric cars become standard to a "history of early electric cars in early 21st century" list. Meerwind7 (talk) 07:59, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

This article needs to be renamed

edit

This is a list of cars or similar vehicles; it does not (or should not) include scooters and motorcycles. Nor does it include boats, etc... so it should be called List of production battery-electric cars. CGameProgrammer 19:43, 2 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

We can create a List of production battery electric vehicles article and a List of production battery electric cars article, with links from one to the other (vehicles would include trucks, buses, scooters and motorcycles). --Nopetro 20:47, 12 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Unverified cars (deleted)

edit

I deleted some of the cars listed in Production Vehicles because I could find no information on electric versions currently being produced. These are:

Almost certainly a scam; it's wholly unrealistic and I would like to see an unbiased source, not affiliated with Homestead, that has purchased and built the car. Until then, it does not belong anywhere in Wikipedia.
I can't find any information on the electric version of this.
All that's mentioned is a concept shown at a car show. There are many electric concepts; is it actually being produced and sold though? I don't think so.

What is the performance of this car? I can't find information on the top speed through Google. If it's limited to 50 mph or below, I feel it should be placed in the "low-speed vehicles" section, as it would not have the performance of a regular gasoline or diesel car. I want this article to accurately differentiate between electric cars that are fully capable versus ones with limitations. CGameProgrammer 20:06, 5 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Request for Entry on Switch Vehicles

I added an entry for Switch Vehicles - production planned for 2012. I am doing a little marketing for this vehicle so I will refrain from writing an entry on it, but I would like to request an entry if anyone is interested. More information about the vehicle can be found here: http://switchvehicles.com and in an article about the vehicle here: http://blog.greentransportation.info/2011/11/jim-mcgreens-new-company-switch.html Saillwhite (talk) 04:09, 29 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Termination of updates and renaming of list

edit

Electric and hybrid cars are becoming more comonpace. When at some time most types of car will have a electric or hybrid variant, it is not meaningful and imossible to keep these lists updates. I suggest to terminate new entries for any new models that enter(ed) the market after 2018, and rename it correspondingly. The list would thus grudually evolve into a historic document of early actvities in the car industrie in the first two decades of this millennium. This would not preclude some notes about highly significant new market entries or best-selling cars of that type. But certainly, the expectation of a "complete" list of all electric or hybrid cars is inachievable. Meerwind7 (talk) 07:07, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

And reverted for now. While there's no need for a separate "table" article, we shouldn't remove the complete list. Geometry C is one of the many articles which should be on a comprehensive list, but probably not a table of the most "notable" electric cars. My question is: should the table be at the top of the page, or should that information be in prose, or something else? User:力 (power~enwiki, π, ν) 20:39, 29 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Here is my verdict: (I said the same thing on the WikiProject Automobiles talk page) If we agree that the table is the right choice, then we will work together to merge the two articles. If the list is after all better, then I will CSD the table as an unnessecary disambiguation page. And my mentor will probably hate me. So what's it gonna be?JTZegersSpeak

There are around 360 vehicles listed and the number will continue to increase. It's somewhat unrealistic to expect contributors, which are volunteers, to convert the list format consisting of 360 vehicles into the table format. I'm leaning towards deleting the table list to avoid WP:FORK. Andra Febrian (talk) 13:13, 30 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I'm back. I'm just put on restrictions for now. So, what should we do?User:JTZegersSpeak*Aura 22:03, 1 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I've just suggested (below) what I think we should do, which is to wrap up this whole mess by switching to a category. Then consolidate the list and table into a single article which is temporally-limited to BEVs that were in series production prior to 2020. Because otherwise this all just becomes a list of everything, which is unsustainable and useless. To be clear, I'm not advocating deleting this article, merely constraining the last date of eligibility for inclusion of additional vehicles. And, yes, JTZegers, that was ridiculously hasty, given the glacial pace of prior conversation on here... I'll check back in a month to see if anyone has any thoughts on the matter. EVhotrodder (talk) 13:00, 13 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Note: Ok, I was reblocked hours after my unblock for violating one of the unblock conditions, but now (since November 1), I'm back and under those conditions for another year just in case.

I think we should acknowledge that this article has a limited future, and move toward the exits in an orderly fashion.

edit

As has been pointed out many times above, since essentially all productions vehicles will be battery electric relatively soon, by automotive timescales, this article, were people to try to continue to maintain it as a comprehensive list, would simply be a list of all production vehicles. And that's neither maintainable nor sensible.

I propose that we switch this to a category, probably "Category:Production electric vehicles" for simplicity. And I propose that the criteria for inclusion be that the vehicle has had 25 or more units sold to the general public within the span of a year (which is the broadest generally-accepted definition of "production") and that the vehicle be purely battery-electric, not hybrid, hydrogen, electric-assisted-pedal-power, etc. If people want to create complementary categories for those, I'm fully supportive, but that's not what I'm proposing here and now.

Once that's done and the articles associated with vehicles currently listed on this page (and on the separate table) have been added to it, my personal belief is that this article should be transformed into a discussion of "Electric vehicles in series production prior to 2020," since that's not actually boiling the ocean. But that's just my opinion, and I'd rather we keep these two issues separate. For now, I'm just advocating the creation of a new category, "Production electric vehicles". EVhotrodder (talk) 12:57, 13 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yay! A little more digging, and I found that this already exists: Category:Battery electric cars currently in production. I'll start through the list here and make sure that all that I can see to be actually in production are appropriately tagged. EVhotrodder (talk) 13:10, 13 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I've gotten mostly through the linked articles, done a bit of clean-up, and categorized the ones that were in production with the missing category. However, it's become apparent that many of the vehicles in the "in production" list are not, actually. They're either unrealized prototypes, or have gone out of production without having been moved to the "previously in production" list. I think the reality is that this is a moving target, and continuous maintenance is needed if a list is going to purport to be accurate. Like I said, I think this article is doomed to become unsynchronized with reality if it attempts to keep up with the moving target of all production EVs. Particularly if things get listed before they're actually in series production, which just makes the problem that much messier. EVhotrodder (talk) 14:12, 13 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Just noting some conversation similar to this conversation happening here, at Talk:List_of_electric_cars_currently_available. Notably, even the categories are a mess right now. I'm taking action on this now, and giving the best notice I can wherever changes are to be made. Unfortunately, I think WP:BOLD is going to apply when making decisions here — there are too many conversations happening in too many disparate places. Shout at me if you have any general concerns. --No coffee, please. (talk) 01:33, 24 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal: Integrate List of modern production plug-in electric vehicles

edit

There's a larger discussion to be had regarding deprecating this page entirely, and moving towards categorization.

In meantime, I'd like to propose merging List of modern production plug-in electric vehicles into this article.

Some thoughts:

Proposal:

* BEVs should come to this page.
* PHEVs should immediately be dropped into Category:Plug-in_hybrid_vehicles and/or sent to List of hybrid vehicles (which should also be considered defunct, but one thing at a time...)

Any other thoughts? --No coffee, please. (talk) 15:28, 1 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Having said that, I don't think it is a good idea to eliminate the list article complete for production electric cars, and just move to categories. A good list article of electric cars that are, or ever were, in production would be great. Just like we don't depend on categories to make understanding all aircraft in WIkipedia, and we have List of aircraft to cover the entire worldwide scope topic. N2e (talk) 03:50, 2 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Brief bullet point responses:
  • I generally agree that it's not yet the right time to deprecate such a list entirely.
  • A historical list of electric cars makes sense. However, a future list is going to run into some problems, quickly, especially as the world's automotive production switches entirely to electric over the next decade or so. As I've said before, any list of electric cars will eventually asymptotically approach a 'list of cars' over the next decade or so, making such a list redundant and unwieldy.
  • I'm currently forwarding some discussion that that topic over at Category talk:Electric vehicles introduced in the 20th century, a category which I believe was renamed and split sub-optimally from a previous category originally named Category:Historic electric vehicles. You can see some thoughts there.
  • The best format for such a historical list/category should likely follow thinking of it conceptually as a supplement to History of the electric vehicle.
  • I'll be honest, even though it sets some kind of precedent, List of aircraft seems absolutely ridiculous to me. We don't have a List of cars for a reason, it's an entirely undigestible concept. Further: While there are a few dozen aircraft manufacturers worldwide, each putting out a new model of aircraft every few years, there are hundreds and hundreds of automakers, the largest of them putting out several new models every single year.
  • To my point: There are currently 136 BEV automobiles listed on List of production battery electric vehicles, the most complete such list on Wikipedia at the moment. Meanwhile, I've actually collected nearly 400 such vehicles over at Category:Production_electric_cars already, and I estimate there's probably another 50-100 to go. That means the most complete list on Wikipedia is currently undercounting by a factor of four. --No coffee, please. (talk) 01:59, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Lead section

edit
This list needs a lead section. The inclusion criterion does not appear to be unambiguously clear from the article title.
I would imagine (likely erroneously) that most people would know that, unlike a weed-eater (or other items meant to remain in a certain area) a "vehicle" is intended to travel a certain distance that would mean an electric cord is not feasible. Adding "Battery" would not seem necessary with a lead. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) have been called Electric vehicles (EV) for a long time and the term is well known. If an alternate mode is incorporated, like an engine, they would be referred to as a hybrid. The definition of an electric vehicle would be: "Fully electric vehicles with rechargeable batteries and no gasoline engine". It would be like adding "rechargeable" to the title. I would equally guess that most people would know that as unnecessary since, unlike other battery-operated things, one would not expect to replace the battery every time it died. -- Otr500 (talk) 09:48, 30 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Addition: I mentioned "hybrid" known as Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) but there is also Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) that are also by definition a "hybrid". However, since the Mercedes-Benz E 300 BlueTEC uses a diesel engine, as well as the first generation diesel/electric Peugeot 3008 HYbrid4, and I believe the Citroën DS5 Hybrid, I struck through "gasoline".
