Ceased to exist
editKalimpong subdivision has ceased to exist from 14 February 2017. Please read the reference: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/carved-out-of-darjeeling-kalimpong-a-district-today/articleshow/57137909.cms. It has become a district now. All info from this page need to be shifted to Kalimpong district. Can you redirect this subdivision page to the district page? Saildew (talk) 12:38, 18 February 2017 (UTC)
- I don't think that's necessary. For comparison, the Mughal Empire also ceased to exist, yet we still have an article on it. This article should note that the subdivision of Darjeeling became an independent district, Kalimpong district, in 2017, but it was a subdistrict for more than a hundred years, and we should not eliminate the article on a subdivision that existed for more than a century. - Fine. But can the subdivision article be modified as most of its administrative units now come under the district administration headed by a district magistrate (sub-divisional officer (SDO) was the subdivision head earlier)? Kalimpong district will hopefully have subdivisions of its own, and one such subdivision could be called Kalimpong subvision - just like Darjeeling district and Darjeeling subdivision. Chandan Guha, I am hard put to find any evidence for the existence of this subdivision. Can you enlighten me? -- Kautilya3 (talk) 17:23, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
- On formation of a new district, the subdivision and the sub divisional officer (SDO) continue to function under the new district - they don't cease to exist. This is so for numerous districts formed across the country. See district website. See Administrative set up section under About district. It says "Kalimpong District has a typical administrative setup. The district is headed by the District Magistrate & Collector. The district has 1(one) Sub Division which is headed by Sub Divisional Officer. The district have 3(three) blocks which is headed by Block Development Officers. The district has 1(one) Municipality headed by Chief Executive Officers." It is wrong to say that the subdivision has ceased to exist. Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 22:17, 4 December 2021 (UTC)
Kautilya3 I hope the position is clarified. Cheers. Chandan Guha (talk) 11:41, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
Saildew It was nice of you to have raised the point before taking any action. Unfortunately, I missed the developments on this page. Please ping the creator/ developer of any article which you want to change in a major way. Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 11:41, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- Well, if the babudom wants to create multiple layers of administration to run the same piece of territory, they can suit themselves. But that is not the way Wikipedia works. Anyway, I am willing to wait until the next Census Handbook comes out, which will clarify the picture.
- However, the name "Kalimpong Sadar" is weird. I would like to rename it back to Kalimpong Subdivision, which has a history dating back to 1906.
- Chandan Guha, I wonder if you can do the needed edits for this announcement. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 12:40, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
- Kautilya3 I have put the page back to its old name. I have also added the information about the new block on the Kalimpong II, Pedong and Algarah pages. More information is required before useful new pages can be put up, but someone may go ahead and place one/two liners. I don't think that is of much use. Cheers. - Chandan Guha (talk) 14:52, 5 December 2021 (UTC)
