about
Haunting new single 'Instant Coffee' is another immersive slice of hazy melancholia from Brisbane indie-pop five-piece Dumb Things, its gently pulsing percussion, shimmering guitars and subtle vocal harmonies perfectly augmenting the band’s heartfelt reflection on routine and solitude. The daily ritual of turning on the kettle becomes a motif of compromised happiness, her beautifully inquisitive vocal delivery bringing the feels even as guitars build towards the quietly epic crescendo.
lyrics
Lyrics:
I fill the kettle with water to dilute the time
Weather system forming in the kitchen
If I was a smoking man I'd spend all the dry season
Blowing storm clouds at the ceiling
And it's hard to know what to do
When your cup's full of evening news
Instant coffee on your own
Instant coffee on your own
You tie the tag round the handle of a chipped and dirty cup
While the kitchen window's waking up
If I was a gambling man I'd bet you handle it better than I do
Do you handle it, do you handle it
And the sky boils the sea
There's a hundred degrees between you and me
And it's hard to know what to do
There's a hundred degrees between me and you
Instant coffee on your own
Instant coffee on your own
Black and white and overflowing
Instant coffee on your own

I only have the option of selecting In The Stone and Psychic as my favorite track. I would have selected Desire just ahead of both. First time I seen this was on KEXP at home and love it. Lots of strong tracks on this album, one of my faves from the past few years. Tony Brown
