The DuckTales comic book published by Boom! Studios were the third of four different comic books based on the original animated series of the same name (not counting DuckTales Magazine). Coming at the tail end of Boom!'s run with the Disney comic license, it only lasted for six issues, from May to November 2011.
Overview[]
Like Disney Comics' DuckTales title before it, Boom!'s DuckTales comic featured multi-part serials. Warren Spector was announced as its writer and the book was to be set within the same universe as Boom!'s Darkwing Duck title. Miquel Pujol was announced as the artist despite not being offered the position and eventually turned down the offer, with Leonel Castellani and JosƩ Massaroli replacing him.
The first serial, "Rightful Owners" (#1-4), received much negative criticism, regarding writing and pacing, continuity errors, mischaracterization in relation to the show, and artwork (with particular negativity being given to an unfinished-looking page in issue #3, which was notably replaced in the trade paperback reprint).
The second serial, "Dangerous Currency", was a crossover with Darkwing Duck, created by regular Darkwing Duck team Ian Brill (script) and James Silvani (art), with participation by Spector and Massarelli.
"Dangerous Currency" turned out to be the last story published in both titles (#5-6 of DuckTales and #17-18 of Darkwing Duck); in late 2011 Boom! canceled its remaining Disney titles, and in 2012 ā€“ following both DuckTales serials being reprinted in trade paperbacks ā€“ its license to publish Disney comics expired.
"Rightful Owners" was reprinted in IDW Publishing's Disney Afternoon Giant in 2019.
