PvP is an abbreviation for Player versus Player. Different games have mechanics for fighting other players, including Dueling, Brawling, and PvP events. Generally, characters can use the same spells and abilities in PvP as in regular gameplay, although character statistics and damage scaling sometimes works differently in PvP.

The opposite of PvP is PvE, Player(s) vs. Environment (or Enemies). The Diablo franchise tends to focus on PvE by default.[1] Diablo Immortal has several more PvP features than the other games.

Diablo II[]

PvP is only possible in multiplayer games (including LAN or over Battle.net). Both characters must be at least level 9. It is not possible to engage in PvP in a town.

Diablo III[]

PvP in Diablo III takes the form of "Brawling", in which any players in the game may enter "the Training Grounds" where free-for-all PvP is enabled automatically. Nek the Brawler teleports the player to the zone, actually called the Scorched Chapel, from any town. The consequences of death do not apply here other than needing to respawn, making it safe for Hardcore characters; durability damage is not possible either.

Blizzard originally had more elaborate plans for PvP in the game, and featured a clip of an organized 2v2 Arena battle set in Maghda's boss area at BlizzCon 2010.[2] In March 2012 Jay Wilson announced the Arena system would not be present in the game's launch version, citing the need to improve it to sufficient quality standards and promising a later patch would include it with "multiple Arena maps with themed locations and layouts, PvP-centric achievements, and a matchmaking system".[3] However, in December that year, Wilson announced the team was shelving the Arena feature, citing a lack of depth and compelling reasons to play a team deathmatch mode for more than a few hours, and noting that the PvE nature of Diablo which has always taken precedence made class balance difficult. He reassured fans of dueling from Diablo II that a dueling option would be available in the upcoming Patch 1.0.7.[1] Patch 1.0.7 did indeed introduce Brawling in the Scorched Chapel.[4] No other PvP features were ever introduced.

Diablo Immortal[]

Diablo Immortal was designed with more of a PvP focus, including a shifting two faction system encouraged to fight each other periodically, and achievements and progression events related to PvP. Several game stats directly apply to PvP effectiveness.
