The Moon

The Moon is Sanctuary's natural satellite.

Lore[]

The Moon has lunar phases,[1] and sometimes moves in front of the sun, forming an eclipse.[2] This includes Blood moons[3] and Blue moons.[4] The nights preceding the full moon are sometimes far more dangerous than the event itself.[5]

The moon's light is said to be magical;[6] the Celestial Court utilizes a form of ancient magic that is enhanced by the moon and stars.[7] Drawing power from the moon can grant one the power to obscure or transform or control, depending on its phase.[2]

Sharval Mythology[]

"As the moon's interests change, so does the power we draw from it. To obscure or transform or control. But none of its faces are weak, only waiting."

- Gwerith(src)

The moon, most particularly its lunar phases, played a key role in the beliefs of the Witch Circles of the Sharval Wilds. They believed that the moon gave equal favor to all who sought it, renewing its strength as it turned its face (went through lunar phases). Their beliefs held that the moon was at its weakest when it "hid its face" (a new moon), but always renewed itself. They believed that the moon was like a child, that it hid its face at times, showed it clearly during others. They believed none of the moon's faces were weak, only waiting. They could draw on the power of the moon for their wards, but to draw upon the moon overmuch was to overwhelm it. As such, all the circles knew to exercise caution when drawing on the moon's power. They believed that the moon's interests changed, and as such, the power they drew from it shifted in kind.[2]

Other Mythologies[]

According to Covetous Shen, Sanctuary originally had two moons. Liria was the personification of the second moon.[8]

The moon plays a role in Druid divination practices. Under the stars and new moon, devotees often see new patterns in the night sky, hinting at things yet to come.[9]

The blood moon persists as a sign of woe for the most superstitious Zakarum faithful. Children born under it are often considered cursed and cast out, lest it spread.[3]

Lunar Awakening is apparently tied to the moon.[10]
