Legendary Gems are gems featured in Diablo Immortal and Diablo III.
Diablo Immortal[]
Legendary Gems feature in Diablo Immortal. They provide powerful bonuses to primary gear,[1] and can be socketed in primary gear of rare or legendary quality. Each type has a star rating that can be 1, 2 or 5 stars. The 5-star ones also have an actual rating of 2/5, 3/5, 4/5 or 5/5 on each individual gem, with 5/5 being the rarest. The star rating determines the gem's Resonance and upgrade cost.
Legendary Gems can be upgraded at the Apprentice Jeweler.

Diablo III[]
Legendary Gems were introduced in Patch 2.1.0 of Diablo III. Each usable Legendary Gem has two unique powers. One is active as soon as the gem is socketed into an equipped item, and can be strengthened by upgrading the gem to higher ranks; the second is a fixed bonus that is unlocked when the gem is upgraded to Rank 25.
Like all gems, Legendary Gems are account bound. They only drop at character level 70, but have no level requirement. They are unique-equipped - two of the same Gem cannot be equipped at the same time. All but three of them (see below) can only be socketed into Amulets and Rings, so typically only three Legendary Gems can be used at a time. They are powerful enough that it is always preferable to use jewelry with sockets to benefit from three different Legendary Gems. Followers can have Legendary Gems equipped, but only two have any effect this way: Esoteric Alteration and Mutilation Guard, which both have defensive powers.
Legendary Gems only drop from Rift Guardians in Greater Rifts, except for three with unique drop mechanics. A Greater Rift Guardian will always drop one of the possible Legendary Gems a character does not already "own", chosen randomly. Gems count as owned if they are in the inventory or stash, or are socketed into items in those locations. Those carried by other characters on the account or in the party do not count, nor do Gems on the ground. If each possible Legendary Gem is already owned, the Guardian does not drop a Legendary Gem at all.
Gems always drop at Rank 0, regardless of Greater Rift level, except for the Whisper of Atonement. They can all be upgraded by speaking with Urshi after completing Greater Rifts. Most gems can be upgraded as high as Greater Rift completion allows, but a few have a limit, after which Urshi will stop offering the chance to upgrade that gem.
The Legendary Gems that don't drop and/or socket in the usual way are:
Gem | Acquisition | Usage |
---|---|---|
Boon of the Hoarder | Drops normally from Rift Guardians, and also drops from Greed in The Vault (guaranteed if not already owned) | Normal |
Gem of Ease | Normal | Sockets into weapons, not jewelry. Has no combat benefits for a level 70 character, so the "extra" Gem being equipped is not significant for game balance. |
Red Soul Shard | Drops only from the Dark Lord in the Darkening of Tristram event each January | Sockets into head armor instead of jewelry. |
Whisper of Atonement | Drops only from the Echoing Nightmare, pre-ranked based on performance | Has no powers, cannot be socketed, and is only useful as an ingredient for augmentation.[2] |
The Soul Shards which drop in some Seasons are similar to Legendary Gems, with unique powers and ranks. However they drop and upgrade via random drops, not from Greater Rifts, have less predictable powers, and socket into weapons and/or helms rather than jewelry. They were likely inspired by the Red Soul Shard, itself one of the most unusual Legendary Gems.

Upgrading[]
Urshi will offer several chances to upgrade Legendary Gems at the end of any Greater Rift, if the Rift Guardian is defeated in time. The blue property on the gem is the only property that will be upgraded. The player can select any gem equipped, in inventory, or in the stash to upgrade, and may use different upgrade chances on different gems if desired.
After a successful Rift, Urshi will automatically offer three upgrade chances. Up to five total chances can be obtained with two potential additional chances:
- No Deaths: An extra chance is given if the character did not die during the Rift. This includes Hardcore characters, who of course must survive anyway.
- Empowered Rift: If the Rift is empowered by a gold payment before starting the Rift, completing the Rift in time grants an extra chance. The cost scales up based on the Rift tier and is quite large, intended to be the primary gold sink at the end of the game.[3]
Each attempt to upgrade may succeed or fail with a probability based on the level of the completed Greater Rift Tier compared to the rank of the Gem. This probability is updated with each new attempt, so if previous attempts were successful, the higher gem rank could make the next chance less likely. Starting with the Greater Rift Tier and subtracting the current Legendary Gem Rank determines the success rate as follows:
Rift Tier minus Gem Rank | +10 or higher | +9 | +8 | +7 | +0 to +6 | -1 | -2 | -3 | -4 | -5 | -6 to -15 | -16 or lower |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Upgrade success rate | 100% | 90% | 80% | 70% | 60% | 30% | 15% | 8% | 4% | 2% | 1% | 0% |
Expected chances used | 1 | 1.11 | 1.25 | 1.43 | 1.67 | 3.3 | 6.67 | 12.5 | 25 | 50 | 100 | Impossible |
Perfect success at reaching a specific rank is therefore guaranteed when clearing a rift 9 levels higher than the target rank. It is only possible at all from a rift at most 16 levels below the target rank - although attempting to upgrade with such a low chance is not recommended.
Most Legendary Gems can be leveled as far as Greater Rift completion allows. However, a few have a limit. Urshi will simply not allow using chances to upgrade these gems if they are already at their maximum:
Legendary Gem | Maximum rank | Maximum effect summary |
---|---|---|
Boon of the Hoarder | 50 | 100% chance on kill to create an explosion of Gold |
Iceblink | 50 | 25% additional Slow from Chill |
Legacy of Dreams | 99 | +375% to all Damage, applied up to 13x2 times (9750% at maximum) |
Esoteric Alteration | 100 | 60% non-Physical Damage Reduction |
Mutilation Guard | 100 | 60% melee Damage Reduction |
Gogok of Swiftness | 150 | 2% Dodge chance, stacking 15 times (30% Dodge at full) |
Whisper of Atonement | 150 | No direct effect (Augmenting: +750 to a core stat) |
Caldesann's Despair[]
The Caldesann's Despair recipe in Kanai's Cube consumes a Legendary Gem to imbue an Ancient Legendary item (including Primal Ancients) with an additional bonus to a core attribute (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, or Vitality). Each Rank of the gem consumed grants 5 points in the attribute.
Whispers of Atonement are designed to be used for this purpose, avoiding the need to rank up a normal Legendary Gem. In Seasons with Soul Shards, an upgraded Soul Shard can also be used this way, functioning as if it were a level 50, 75, 100, or 125 Legendary Gem depending on upgrade level.
Patch changes[]
- Patch 2.1 (Season 1): Legendary Gems and Greater Rifts introduced.
- Patch 2.3 (Season 4): Kanai's Cube introduced, including Caldesann's Despair recipe, an outlet for unwanted high level Legendary Gems. Greater Rifts mechanics adjusted, and Urshi no longer offers upgrade chances after time expires.[4]
- Patch 2.4.0 (Season 5): Empowerment of Greater Rifts for extra upgrade chances introduced. Interface improved to show gem ranks in all relevant user interface areas.[5]
- Patch 2.4.1 (Season 6): Multiple gems redesigned.[6]
- Patch 2.4.3 (Season 9): Added extra chance for an upgrade if a character survives the Greater Rift. Added Red Soul Shard, the only head-socketed Legendary Gem, as part of Anniversary Event.[7]
- Patch 2.7.3 (Season 26): Added Whisper of Atonement and Echoing Nightmare.[2]
