"Why can’t they be regular swamps?"
"Because they need to be foul. This is super-important foul. Foul swamps. Sounds pretty dark, right?"
- John Mueller and Tiffany Wat(src)
The Swamplands of Hawezar[1] (more commonly just called Hawezar), and otherwise known as the Swamplands[2] or Wetlands[3] is a geographic area in Sanctuary. It is located south of the Fractured Peaks.
Lore[]
Hawezar's swamps are fed by waterfalls from the Fractured Peaks due to snowmelt.[4] The region is stated to, in some way, not be part of Sanctuary.[citation needed]
Denizens[]
The native humans of the Swamplands are fairer of hair and skin when compared to Kehjistani.[3] However, by the Great Enmity, the peoples were more diverse.[5] Hawezar is inhabited by cutthroats, thieves, assassins, murderers that want to do their dark trades far out of the reach of the forces of like law and order, or groups like the Zakarum.[1] More than one coterie has braved the swamps seeking to discover the mystery of what lies beyond death.[6]
It has been said that only those who deal in death, or wish to find it, come to Hawezar,[7] or that only those who wish to be forgotten come here.[1] Swamp Witches intone long-forgotten curses within the swamps,[7] worshiping giant snakes. The Witches may be willing to impart their dark knowledge, but only at a high price.[1]
Some say that hags and demons, who call these swamps home, will teach their dark arts to a Sorcerer willing to undertake their morbid rituals.[8]
Hazards[]

Hawezar is inimical to human life.[6] Poison, disease, and despair spread over this region like mold, growing and infecting everything within.[7] A humid bog teeming with abominations,[9] Hawezar is a deadly land, even to those familiar with its tortuous paths.[7]
Hawezar is a rigorous realm to travel in,[10] and lice is present. To prevent infection, many male Crusaders (and some females) shave their hair to reduce the chance of carrying lice.[11]
Man-eating plants hunger for human flesh in Hawezar It is a place of madness, of black magic,[1] and poisonous spiders are common here.[4]
History[]
It is into the Swamplands that the Crusaders ventured after the founding of their order.[12]
By the 13th century,[13] Zakarum had established a number of outposts, settlements, and strongholds throughout Hawezar.[14]
After Lilith's defeat, Zir ordered the Blood Seekers and their vampire forces to conquer Hawezar.[15]
In-game[]
Hawezar is one of the six main geographic areas that can be explored in Diablo IV.[7]

Trivia[]
- Hawezar was technically first seen/referenced in Diablo III and associated materials, though was simply referred to as "swampland." Comparing the geography of the "swampland" and Hawezar however, these two regions appear to be one and the same. The article has treated them as such.
