CAT:PER and translation issues
Hi. User:Nemo bis has made several edit requests that fall under the realm of translation admin territory and they should be looked at.
- Commons_talk:Contact_us#Translation
- Commons_talk:General_disclaimer#Translation
- Commons_talk:Privacy_policy#Translations
- Commons_talk:Welcome#Translation
I might be nulling the templates shortly since they are cluttering up the protected edit requests category. Killiondude (talk) 05:20, 3 July 2013 (UTC)
Todo
- Help:Contents - Full historymerge is necessary.
- Commons:Project scope - Older translation of als, bn, de and zh-hans are not migrated to new system.
I discouraged translation to both pages. If you find more which are problematic, don't hesitate to add here. Best regards. – Kwj2772 (msg) 10:12, 6 July 2013 (UTC)
Unordered lists
I've seen several unordered lists that were split just to get new translation units. Is this the desired way to go?
Example:
|
---|
Before: * This is how * The list looked before which produces the following HTML: <ul> <li>This is how</li> <li>The list looked before</li> </ul> After translationadmin-treatment: * This is how * The list looked before which produces the following HTML: <ul> <li>This is how</li> </ul> <ul> <li>The list looked before</li> </ul> |

- @Rillke: mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration#Markup examples suggests splitting very long lists only. --Ricordisamoa 18:40, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
Categorization of translation
Some pages use the {{LangCat}} which produces subpages of categories (e.g. "Commons policies/de" for German translations of policy pages; contains 5 pages currently). We already have had conventional local category scheme named in local languages (e.g. "Commons Richtlinien" for Gernan; contains 15 pages). We should decide which category to be used in translations. We have three choices:
- Keep {{LangCat}} and migrate to new category scheme.
- Keep old category scheme by assigning one more translation unit for categorization.
- Redirect one category to another.
Your opinion is appreciated. Thank you. – Kwj2772 (msg) 09:48, 19 August 2013 (UTC)
- I Support first option: we can't keep old category scheme by assigning one more translation unit for categorization because there are no the only way to translate a phrase - two translators will translate the same category name using two ways and you will get duplicates - that's not what we need. We can't forse translators to check if the category was translated somewhere (it seems to be very complicated) as well. Another way is to create monster-like template with switch for ALL cat's and their localized names but IMO that's a bad way which needs a lot of maintance. About redirects - are category redirects working now? AFAIK they were not. --BaseSat (talk) 20:10, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
License templates
Should we move to the Translate extension all the license templates, e.g. {{PD-RusEmpire}}?
If yes, I suggest a translating-templates-week for TAs and translators -- Ата (talk) 11:54, 28 September 2013 (UTC)
- I'm sure that we definitely should move all translateble stuff to the extension. But I see no point in week - actually there is enough work for translating-templates-year but people who want to do the stuff just do it when they want :) But but there are still not all policies pages moved to the new system - IMO we should work on them first. --BaseSat (talk) 20:04, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
- I think we should do one (small) template first, show it to everybody and discuss it. We do not want to do the work twice. --Jarekt (talk) 13:38, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Help with pages already using the translation
Hi I was lately experimenting with this extension on a few small pages. Everything seems to work fine, but one issue I have is that subpages created by the extension seem to be in the same categories as the main page. I must be doing something wrong. See for example Commons:Senate of Poland, or Commons:Józef Piłsudski Institute of America. Can someone help me fix it. --Jarekt (talk) 14:08, 20 February 2014 (UTC)

- If needed I can help with moving Polish text to the new format. --Jarekt (talk) 19:52, 21 February 2014 (UTC)
- It will be hard to migrate all pages to the new system while preserving the old history. --Ricordisamoa 21:58, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
- Yes I do not know how it was intended to be done. --Jarekt (talk) 04:14, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
- If it is not important to preserve the old history, we can start a new translatable page from scratch and use it within the soon-to-be-ready Module:Assessments. --Ricordisamoa 17:39, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

tvar
Hi,
See on Commons:Photo_challenge/Voting_header/en the tvar markup, even though it does not appear on the French translated page. Any idea what went wrong?
Jean-Fred (talk) 09:45, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
- There seems to be some kind of issue with the translate extension (specifically FuzzyBot updating the translations). I just performed a null edit without changing any translations and marked the page for translation again which triggered FuzzyBot to do the required changes. I noticed this myself before but don't know what is causing this yet. --Patrick87 (talk) 10:03, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you, was already wondering what triggered this edit. -- Rillke(q?) 10:10, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
- Huh, that’s a weird one. Well, thanks Patrick87 for solving it :) Jean-Fred (talk) 10:30, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
GSoC 2014 proposal for page migration under the Translate extension
Hello everyone!
I am Pratik Lahoti (User:BPositive) from Pune, India. I am willing to participate in the Google Summer of Code this year. I am interested in the project titled - “Tools for mass migration of legacy translated wiki content”.
My mentors for this project would be Niklas Laxström and Federico Leva.
With their help, I have drafted the first version of my proposal page. You can find it here:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Translate/Mass_migration_tools
This project is a blessing in disguise for all the translation administrators, as it completely automates the tedious manual task of preparing the pages for translation as well as importing the translations. The proposal page mentions the Project Outline and the approach/solution towards the problem statement. I am done with most of the sections and left with the Project Schedule (which I will finish off when everything is finalized).
Please have a look at the proposal and give your valuable feedback/suggestions. While I have no problems in replying to the suggestions put forth over here, I would appreciate if you can do the same on the discussion page of the proposal, so that all the feedback is at one single place. Looking forward to hearing from you, Thank you! BPositive (talk) 05:01, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
Translate tags messing up section headers
According to some discussion I had with Steinsplitter at User talk:Steinsplitter/Archive/2014#Adding translation tags, the translate tags are causing section headers to act like they are not section headers at all, and repeatedly return errors when attempting to edit specific sections. Steinsplitter has referred me to bugzilla:58946 as the cause of the issue, but I'm wondering, can we arrange a workaround for this issue in the meantime so that the rest of us can correct basic typos, etc? TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 13:50, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
- Does it shown like this?--AldNonUcallin?☎ 00:23, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- I added my comments in the bugzilla ticket to link to the test case I used at https://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/G87172 TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 07:59, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I saw your comment that's why I ask, so the bug replace or moving the tag to some incorrect place then?--AldNonUcallin?☎ 16:43, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- In my opinion, it seemed to be incorrect placement of translation tags that was causing the problem. However, Steinsplitter has insisted that the placement was correct and that it was the result of a MediaWiki bug. So I did a little investigation of my own to try and find the root cause of this issue. As Steinsplitter is a translation administrator on Commons, and he has worked with the translate tool for a lot longer time than I have, I am obliged to defer to his judgement on this matter, but I still wanted to express my concerns towards him. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 19:39, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

- It is not a incorrect placement of translation tags, see mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration#Markup_examples (Wrong & Correct). --Steinsplitter (talk) 21:05, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- Okay, I see where you're coming from. My apologies if my posts appeared to attack you in any way. But this is still a problem with MediaWiki, and I'd like to see a workaround for the problem even if only temporary so we can get back to improving the wiki. Let's search for a solution to this bug together, shall we? TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 21:12, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
Chinese translations needed for Search vehicles of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and Category:Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Chinese and Korean needed for Category:Asiana Airlines Flight 214
I did what I could with Search vehicles of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, but Mandarin Chinese translations are needed for Search vehicles of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and for all files in Category:Malaysia Airlines Flight 370.
Also does anyone mind checking if any files at Category:Asiana Airlines Flight 214 are in need Mandarin and/or Korean? If there is a lack of Korean and/or Mandarin in any file there, please add it. In addition if anyone knowing Mandarin or Korean wants, would someone mind adding Mandarin and/or Korean subtitles to the audio file File:AAR214-KSFO-Crash.ogg? Is there a Translation Help page?
In fact this is the only page I found (over Commons:Help desk menu) I don't found any and asked also first on COM:Translation: → Talkpage cross link. -- Perhelion 08:43, 31 May 2014 (UTC)

- Ok its may a main issue in categories in focus of Commons. Some categories have no description or are not fully understandable. For concrete the plain disc and circle category. As I you can see the interwiki link for German has a conflict with Wikipedia (Wikidata) de:Scheibe, there is no correspondence an is something other. Many possible translation http://www.dict.cc/?s=plain = flach, einfach? Maybe w:plane_(geometry)? It made not really sense for me. Thanks -- Perhelion 17:41, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- There is a problem here for sure. I found a note on category:Circles page: "For plain undecorated circles, see Category:Plain circles and Category:Plain discs" (I think 'plain' here means flach & einfach at the same time). I am not good at categorization logic and hope that someone else will answer here. -- Ата (talk) 20:21, 1 June 2014 (UTC)
- There is a Help:Translation tutorial page, but it needs to be translated into other languages. Delphi234 (talk) 17:22, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

It would be helpful to have a central "Translation requests" page, that was viewed from all languages. For example, right now I need abbreviations for months of the year in all languages, and two items translated, for the image:2014 Ebola Outbreak Monthly Cases per day.svg. Since the German translation uses the first parameter at the end, but the Swedish translation follows the English parameter order, I though it would be convenient for the translator to be able to place the parameters where ever he/she wants in the translation. Is this possible? // WikiPhoenix [Talk] 12:51, 16 May 2014 (UTC)
- Unless I misunderstood, no, it's not possible. What's the purpose of changing parameter order? --Nemo 22:05, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
- I wanted to find a way to keep the translation intact when using Autotranslate. // WikiPhoenix [Talk] 23:00, 18 May 2014 (UTC)
Roadmap
Hi folks,
I have written some modest personal thoughts about an internationalisation roadmap at User:Jean-Frédéric/i18n roadmap. I would be happy to hear your thoughts.
Thanks, Jean-Fred (talk) 13:22, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
- I started playing with translating templates, see {{I18n/manufacturer}}. I am not sure if it works, since I can not convince it to show non-english version. If I use {{I18n/manufacturer}} and switch the language to lets say polish than I still see "manufacturer". --Jarekt (talk) 17:50, 2 May 2014 (UTC)
Hello, it's a bit depressing to look at the numbers here (about 3500 templates to translate considering autotranslate and langswitch only) and compare them to Special:PageTranslation, which has only few hundreds pages in total. Autotranslate templates are supposed to be well structered already, can't they be migrated to Translate with the help of bots now that the translation system is quite established here? What sort of help is needed?
mw:Extension:Translate/Mass_migration_tools is supposed to help especially with the tricky cases, but without a solid local experience of migration it will be hard for Commons to prioritise what its needs are from a project like that or in general. m:Meta:Babylon/Translation stats shows that things are rather quiet here compared to other wikis. --Nemo 22:02, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
Mass migration tools approaching conclusion, feast now
It will be a tough ride to finish the project (if at all possible), but I highly recommend to use Special:PageMigration now: just today, with its help I managed to make almost a thousand edits and migrate several pages including some huge ones. Even in big pages it often works surprisingly well (almost nothing to do manually), while in others it fails spectacularly (but we have some ideas on how to fix it).
With only ten days of coding left, more than ever it's useful if you use the tool on at least one page and comment on the bugs to help us prioritise, or even better report new problems/ideas we've not identified yet. --Nemo 23:45, 8 August 2014 (UTC)
Serbian translations
Hello. Nevenka Antić, CC Serbia legal lead has told me that the localization/translation of CC license templates is wrong in two minor places. Namely, most of the templates start with "Ова датотека је доступна под лиценцом", which should be "Ова датотека је објављена под лиценцом". Also, here and here word "расподељујете" should be replaced with "дистрибуирате". Bear in mind that this is only sr-ec version, as there's also sr version (which should be identical to sr-ec), as well as sr-el (in which case the replaced words should be "objavljena" and "distribuirate" respectively). --Filip (§) 14:49, 26 July 2014 (UTC)
Hi,
- could a "real" administrator please fix the spelling error ("though" -> "through") on above page?
- while we're at it, we could possibly collect some translations of the interface message for other languages, too.

Images
There is a category, Category:Translation possible, but is there a place to request translations? There are over 5,000 images in Category:Translation possible - SVG, and I have been working on them, but if someone wants to request a translation, I can add the necessary <switch> elements, and do a rough translation (a native speaker needs to check and correct each language). It is slow work though, and takes up to a day for each one. There are eight versions of Top 200 images that should use vector graphics, but a Top 200 images that need to be translated page would be helpful (using the Translation possible - SVG category). FuzzyBot not overwriting stuff?
Hi all. I've made a change to Commons:Checkusers/Statistics on 7 November here. Commons:Preparing a page for translation says that "FuzzyBot will now overwrite all existing translations with the source version (English)". But FuzzyBot only overwrote the source version as it seems here. Did I do something wrong? Why did they only overwrite the source version and not all the other lanuage versions? - Well, now I think that I get, but, as you can see here:Commons:Photo challenge, we had the same problem, that's why I copy...
- So, I fix a lot of "non tag to translate" texts, I think that I could now fix the things that you are saying here, and I cut a little more of the fat.

- And then, I changed the code, again, and you simply reverted "TA makeup broken, styl is looking bad with small PC's", but you do not even saw what I did... So you created a edition war, because you are to lazy to check...
- And until now, you do not show me what's the problem, I read all documentation, all documentation, and a applied exactly as they ask for...
- For me, this is a bullshit, and you are just not wanting the change, and making excuses for that.

As a Google Summer of Code Intern, I have been working on the Mass Migration tools project for Wikimedia. We are now ready with a minimal working product. The tool helps translators and translation administrators import the old translations into the Translate Extension.
An instance of the same has been set up on labs. You can find some useful instructions on the main page.
Please test the tool and report bugs/suggestions using the link provided on the main page itself. You can have a look at the tracking bug to check already reported bugs.

A couple of (fairly) new multilingual tags I'm hoping to make more multilingual
In the last year or so, I've created a couple of multilingual tags that I'm hoping to see be more widely translated. One is {{Photo scan}}, which denotes that an image was created from scanning a photograph; it has existed for over a year and has already been translated into a handful of languages. The other is the brand-new {{Other available license options}}, which denotes that there are other available license options for the given image in addition to the primary one (that presumably precedes this tag); as of yet, it has yet to be translated. I would greatly appreciate any and all translations that are added to these two multilingual tags. Thanks! Michael Barera (talk) 04:12, 27 October 2014 (UTC)
- If you guys can translate {{NMoK}}, that would be really appreciated too. — revimsg 15:02, 29 October 2014 (UTC)

Where is the message of "Subpages" on the left sidebar
Hi! In Japanese Commons pages, "Subpages" on the left sidebar is still not translated, but I can't find its source message at translatewiki. Does anyone know where it is? Darklanlan (talk) 12:21, 15 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Darklanlan: I suspect that creating MediaWiki:Subpages/ja with appropriate content will do the trick – on my request Polish translation on Meta has just been done this way: m:MediaWiki:Subpages/pl. However, on Commons this message has been already translated into Polish, but MediaWiki:Subpages/pl doesn't exist. So translated message must be taken from other place, but I also was not able to find suitable message on translatewiki.net. The strange thing is that using
?uselang=qqx
on Meta (e.g. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page?uselang=qqx) shows that the message is called "subpages" (text "subpages" starting with a small "S" closed in parentheses), but on Commons message name is not shown, just ordinary text "Subpages" (starting with a capital "S" and without parentheses, e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page?uselang=qqx). --jdx Re: 21:53, 15 December 2016 (UTC)- @Jdx: I didn't know
?uselang=qqx
suffix, it's useful for translation! Thank you! However, it seems the message is coded as a constant string. ... Oh, I found it was implemented by the extension mw:Extension:Gadgets/Scripts/SubPages.js. But it's difficult for me to modify it, so I have posted this request at mw:Topic:Tha1tu9ot7iumlma. What does {{Original uploader}} mean?
For me it means "the person who uploaded the work for the first time was…" – but I am not fluent in English. On the other hand, Polish (and AFAIK German) translation of this message means "the original work was uploaded by…" which IMO is wrong (BTW there is {{Original uploaded by}} for this). Parisan French, Metropolitan French or Paris accent?
Can anyone tell me which would be the most politically correct? I am asking so that I can be correct when adding Template:Pronunciation to a set of files that the uploader noted "Fr-Paris" on. Here is an example file for reference; File:Fr-accélérateurs de particules (des).ogg
- French pronunciation for "Eatcha" — Paris accent.
- French pronunciation for "Eatcha" — Metropolitan French accent.
- French pronunciation for "Eatcha" — Parisian accent.
Any help appreciated! Riley Huntley (talk) 20:29, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
- Well, it's not a matter of political correctness. There is no "Metropolitan French accent" per se. Someone from Marseille will not speak like someone from Toulouse, Paris or Lille. Like someone from London will not speak like someone from Manchester or Sussex.
- I think that something like "Speaker from XXXXX" would be a good solution. Furthermore, this information should be in the name of the file. Say we have Fr-Poulet.oga from a parisian speaker. If a toulousan speaker wants to upload his version (which is different, the et ending would be spoken like é instead of è), how is going to name his file ? And how the reuser will see the difference easily ?
- Following this idea, we should also take the sex and age (somtehing like child, teen, adult) into account for the name.
- Pleclown (talk) 08:47, 6 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Pleclown: Very good point about Metropolitan French accent. "Speaker from XXXX" is a good solution for {{Pronunciation}}, I'll put that to use if there is no objections. You seem to be wanting to name all the files for French pronunciation different than the style we have in use for any other pronunciation language (that i know of, at least). My question is, what's wrong with simply Fr-Poulet? The description will clearly say the accent, and the image will be categorized based on the accent. Between the two, the file (if it existed) can be found via search and categorization. Yes, perhaps in wiki context you cannot see the difference in the links File:Fr-Poulet.oga and File:Fr-Poulet 2.oga but this is why categorization and descriptions exist. While it may be possible for an original uploader to put sex and age into the file name, I have yet to seen it done thus far and I do not want to see people renaming the files guessing if someone is a teen or an adult (the difference in age can be as small as a year, unlike child and adult). That sounds like a disaster. I would however support creating Category:Pronunciation by gender, Category:Female pronunciation and Category:Male pronunciation (or whatever sounds good) and categorizing the files accordingly. This way, an error can be fixed in a simple edit. Can you give me an example of how you'd name a french toulousan speaker, adult, female for amphithéâtre? File:Fr-Toulouse-amphithéâtre-adult-female.oga? I feel we are then going to get conflicts of the language of what the gender and age should be. Regardless of what we decide on, if we put it to use we may get files uploaded as Femelle (which is easy for a non-english speaker to identify) but then if this moves over to the Spanish pronunciation and half are uploaded as "Hembra" and the other as "Female", there will no doubt be confusion and per the language policy, it'd be inappropriate to rename them to Female. This is why I think all around categorization for accent, gender and age is the best result. I apologize if I'm coming off strong, I've yet to have my morning coffee! :) Riley Huntley (talk) 20:25, 6 April 2016 (UTC)

- I'd suggest to fix it according the proposal but keep it short and if too long, ask again on the village pump for feedback. --Dereckson (talk) 17:30, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
- @Dereckson: Just a note about English text from a person who is far from being fluent in English. IMO it does not sound clearly. Eg. what does “these” mean in the following context: Not all Creative Commons licenses are good for this site. Make sure the copyright holder used one of these licenses.? Does it mean “good licenses” or “not good licenses”? IMO the 2nd sentence should sound like Make sure the copyright holder used suitable license. Or “acceptable”, “proper”, etc. Next, If the work is already published online, but not under that license online, also does not sound well. Which license? OK, I know that when a reader reads the whole text, (s)he can figure it out that “these/that” mean “good license(s)”, but IMO it should be stated clearly. --jdx Re: 22:42, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

- I am tanslation admin and I cannot mark it as patrolled either. To be more specific, I am quite sure that it was I who marked this edit as patrolled under RTRC a few days ago. The "mark as patrolled" message disappeared (however I am not sure if it ever was there), but for an unknown reason the file/edit still "hangs" in RTRC. BTW. A few minutes ago I reverted this edit, but it "hangs" in RTRC just like de version. --jdx Re: 07:31, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
- Maybe you could mark it as patrolled using Special:ApiSandbox? It may be a bit complicated, but all you need is to set the action to patrol, then go to the "action=patrol" section, set rcid to 246290378, then get a patrol token by clicking the left arrow at the right of the bottommost field, and click Make request. I tried using API Sandbox and it doesn't work for me, maybe because I am not a translation admin. Thanks, ★ Poké95 23:40, 16 July 2016 (UTC)
- I does not work: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yjjtfoi4niz76vu/API%20sandbox.png?dl=0. IMO the "tpt-patrolling-blocked" message suggests that patrolling of translated pages has been turned off and after some thought I think this is the right move because translated pages are edited by a bot on behalf of a translator. However such pages should not be shown in RTRC – only source pages (ie. usually in English) should be shown. --jdx Re: 10:11, 17 July 2016 (UTC)

Translations:Page name/id/lang
, where Page name is the translatable page’s full title (including namespace), id is the translation unit’s identifier (usually an integer, incrementing on the page; you can find it as<!--T:id-->
on the English original page) and lang is the target language’s language code). --Tacsipacsi (talk) 11:37, 29 August 2016 (UTC) - This section was archived on a request by: jdx Re: 17:48, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
Translations for gadget HotCat

When tried, it says 'you do not have permission to create this page'. Also, in continuation, pl copy the contents of MediaWiki:Gadget-HotCat.js/en in it so that those can be edited by me. - Pages in MediaWiki namespace can be edited – thus also created – only by administrators. So if somebody would create it, you won’t be able to edit it. You can create its talk page with an {{Editprotected}} template (and, of course, the text you want to have on the content page), and then an administrator will create it (I’m not one). If you add the |technical=yes parameter, it can take a bit longer, but you can make sure that the admin won’t mess up anything even if you mistyped something. Further editing will also be possible through edit requests. --Tacsipacsi (talk) 11:37, 18 September 2016 (UTC)
