Er erhielt 1988 zusammen mit Johann Deisenhofer und Robert Huber den Nobelpreis für Chemie für die Erforschung der dreidimensionalen Molekülstruktur des Reaktionszentrums der Photosynthese im Purpurbakterium Rhodopseudomonas viridis.
