Ahoj, TFerenczy! Thank you for your remarks, but I never used Wikidatas, so it is troublesome to learn it among my other tasks. However I try to do it, but give me some time. My first problem is to find out how to add a new item to the database. If your real name is Ferenczy, I am sad that we can not correspond in Hungarian. ThePlanetDefinition cs.svg

edit

Mohl bych ještě jednou zneužít vaší ochoty a poprosit vás, jestli byste uměl převést obrázek File:ThePlanetDefinition3.png do svg?

--Axxis10 (talk) 02:09, 3 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Archeological site?

edit

Hi. Regarding this change: some years ago I removed the code from the image to prevent robots from adding it to the list because the picture shows a house, not an archeological site so I assumed the photographer made a mistake. Is there something I missed? Are you sure the image is at the correct monument? Thanks.--Strainu (talk) 16:59, 19 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Strainu: It does sound a bit odd, Thank you for your feedback! I trust your judgment in this matter, as I trusted @Acquario51's – the edit wasn't made with any knowledge of the location – I Googled the description to help me to pick a fitting category and the rowiki article came up. Hopefully Acquario51 will recall if the description was a mistake or confirm that the regular-looking house is indeed an archeological site. Until then feel free to revert my edit on rowiki.--TFerenczy (talk) 18:17, 19 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

The Albanian Flag

edit

Could you please change the tail of the eagle on the Albanian flag, which in the curent version uploaded is not accurate according to law 8926 of 2002, the colors seem right but the the tail is not accurate. The more accurate version of the eagle is that on the Albanian Coat of Arms which is uploaded in Wikipedia.

Thank you, I hope you'll act on this. Arianitialbania (talk) 21:32, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Picture sourcing

edit

Hello TFrenczy,

You left a message on my talk page regarding a file without proper sourcing. I am new to wikipedia editing and the citation instruction seemed a bit complicated. I added the page from which the image was taken, please let me know if this format is acceptable.

Thank you for your help --Titus Obelisk (talk) 06:41, 27 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Welcome @Titus Obelisk: . I understand it isn't very intuitive, because people share and re-share pictures on the Internet all the time without much concern for copyright and everything's fine but unfortunately that is not good enough for this website that hosts only free content. We need the author of the photograph to explicitly state they are OK with it being reused even for commercial purposes, most commonly by releasing it under a Creative Commons license in the first place. Unless the Instagram user actually took the photo she cannot do that. For example if the photo was originally uploaded to the church website by the photographer and everyone could download and share it we would still need a note from the photographer because it is not the same as allowing everyone to use it for any purpose for free.
If the user took the photo you can ask for permission and send it through a system described here:Commons:OTRS. I am not experienced in that so I can't help you beyond sharing the guideline. If someone else is the photograper you can maybe upload it locally on English wikipedia as fair use described here:Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline but it is complicated and I don't know much about that.--TFerenczy (talk) 08:17, 27 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Nigde museum Medusa

edit

Hello TFrenczy,

Thank you for editing a picture I took (Nigde museum Medusa Late roman 2nd AD 0949.jpg), and that this morning all of a sudden had a fresh edit by someone naming himself "Adarsh dev (EaE)". I post many pictures that I took, and often am informed that some person (or more often a bot) added information. Often I do not understand why, but I suppose there is some logic to it. But in his case the edit suggested that my picture depicted "Adarsh Kudva". That made me suspicious. I googled to see if maybe Adarsh Kudva was an alternative name for Medusa. Instead I found some "International board certified maxillofacial and oral oncosurgeon." I decided to just wait as I did not understand what was going on, and to maybe later undo this strange edit. Then I was informed that you had done so already. So thanks for that, but alsoː do you have an inkling of what was going on? Is this someone trying to put the name Adarsh Kudva on the map? Is it self-promotion, is it an attempt to cause havoc, or what? If you know I'd be happy to be informed. And also, I wonder what made you see this edit, and react to it. Is there some warning system that I'm not aware of? Dosseman (talk) 19:05, 7 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Dosseman: Hello, there is a tab in Wikipedia's mobile app that suggests its users to add captions and depictions to random files that don't have any and while the majority of those edits are fine some people put erroneous things there for various reasons. Some are well-meaning but add something incorrect (for example that your picture depicts a rock band that is called Medusa). Some may think it's a search bar and mistakenly add their favourite actor or their coutnry to a picture that's completely unrelated. And some add their name or nickname as a test or a joke which I believe is the case here, I don't think "Adarsh dev (EaE)" is the doctor Adarsh Kudva, it's just a thing the system offers when you type Adarsh so he clicked on it. But you are right in your suspicion of self-promotion, some users actually do that; they "add" themselves to Wikipedia by putting their "CV" to a random photo saying it "depicts" [their first name], [their surname], [their city] and various skills such as [programmer], [web designer], [photographer]...
The edits from the app are tagged in Recent Changes and you can filter out edits by experienced users (most users will make a new profile and only do one or two edits like this before they either figure it out or stop). You can see the list here: Link to filtered Recent Changes. I try to go through it every day and fix the honest mistakes and undo the obvious nonsense.--TFerenczy (talk) 20:13, 7 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Dear TFrenczy, As I hoped you gave me a clear explanation, though of a facility I was not aware of. I’ll stick to using a desktop computer for my edits, and even there I’m still learning how to cope with the system. A system that has, obviously, all sorts of queries that have been prepared and are open to people like you who wish to decrease the number of errors and the amount of nonsense. So far I’ve on occasion corrected errors in texts that I came cross and moved some pictures that were in the wrong category, you describe a deeper level. Thanks again for the explanation and your work for us all. Greetings from Amsterdam. Dosseman (talk) 07:54, 8 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Znak a vlajka Jindřichova Hradce

edit

Ted Kaczynski in Montana.png

edit

Hello, I'm trying to round up the licencing of files I have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Recently you've marked Ted Kaczynski in Montana.png as lacking permission and/or a credible source. Indeed, I cited a non-reputable source. The Chicago Tribune (https://www.chicagotribune.com/chi-080302ted-photogallery-photogallery.html) has published the same I have uploaded. I would like to change that as the source. Though the author of the image would remain "Kaczynski family photo" (according to the publisher). Which licencing category would this fall into then? It seems the Kaczynski family has shared their family photos for the public.

Secondly, can one upload images from publications (which have underlying texts like "© DELFI / Tomas Vinickas" or "© Vidmantas Balkūnas"), with proper crediting to Wikipedia? If so, which licencing category do these fall into? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kunigas Michailas (talk • contribs) 19:30, 30 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Kunigas Michailas: Hi, unfortunately Commons is very strict about licensing, so the fact that there are pictures from the family archive on the internet, which implies, as you say, that someone at some point agreed to something in regards to the photographs (or maybe they were confiscated by the FBI and they don't care about copyright?) but that isn't enough. We would need a direct quote "I, author of the photograph, agree, that anyone can do anything with those." Which I am afraid is not possible without contacting someone from the family.
Another unfortunate answer, but no. Any website or photograph that says something akin to "all rights reserved" or "© this and that" and also websites and pictures that don't say anything at all about are not suitable for Commons. You would have to contact mister Vinickas or Balkūnas and ask them for permission to release them which you would forward to address mentioned. Some websites, especially governmental, will explicitly allow reuse under licences that are applicable here but not all, for example Latvian parliament publishes pictures on Flickr under CC-BY-SA 2.0 but the Lithuanian one reserves all rights. As a side note I once looked into licenses of Czech ministries and every one of them has different terms but none are free enough for Commons, mostly because they disallow commercial use. TFerenczy (talk) 07:40, 31 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
That's a pitty. But thanks for informing me. I'll be aware of this from now onwards. Once these files are deleted, will my account my marked as "problematic" in some way? Kunigas Michailas (talk) 12:54, 1 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Kunigas Michailas: Hope it won't discourage you from contributions to Commons in the future. You are welcome. And no, it was an honest mistake, you would have to do much worse and ignore multiple warnings, you are good. TFerenczy (talk) 20:37, 1 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ferencz, maybe that the hints for "frequent errors" in Template talk:Information will be helpful for you ? You may see also my changes to Flag of Němčice(okres Pardubice).svg, or to Coat of arms of Nemochovice.svg which I converted to COAInformation; you create many flags (thank you!) but currently a template FlagInformation does not yet exist.
Please, specify the author field with {{U|TFerenczy}} and not with {{own}}. Thanx -- sarang사랑 09:12, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Sarang Hello, thank you for the guide. I added the COA-specific template myself to some of my files a couple years ago but came to a realisation that there are only a couple people for whom this is of any use and it makes my least favourite part of contributing to Commons (uploading) even more tedious. In recent years I've had doubts if all my time spent here isn't just a waste so I haven't been adding many new files. As a side-note the REKOS symbol registry has changed its URL format for the second time in 10 years (without redirects, again) so about 3,000 links lead to nowhere now and I just can't be bothered to fix it. TFerenczy (talk) 13:06, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

My idea to REKOS: I would create a template for the URL, and replace all (? 3000) links by transcluding the template. The replacement can be done in a semi-automatic way - no great effort. In future just at one central place the URL must be replaced; or, when they change too often, a non-linking comment can be substituted. I can care for it as soon as I have some spare time -- sarang사랑 13:15, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

REKOS: I just see that it is not always the same link, as I first assumed – the id is different for each file. Just the first part can be done with the template, e.g. [https://rekos.psp.cz/detail-symbolu/id/; am I right that this first part had been subject to changing, while the id keeps the same for each image?
I do not believe that contributing to wikimedia is only wasted time; but it is very seldom that a positive feedback occurs. -- sarang사랑 17:06, 14 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Sarang Unfortunately it is the id they changed, for example https://rekos.psp.cz/detail-symbolu/id/12a997a1-dfad-40e4-81df-12f0b1af9a2f became https://rekos.psp.cz/detail-symbolu/id/476, which is much nicer but more difficult to fix. Something like scraping all pages and then matching our file name + category with rekos's name & district to provide ID. TFerenczy (talk) 08:45, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it will become more difficult because it needs a search (when not a conversion table exists - REKOS does not offer one?
And it cannot be solved by a template ! I tried to edit the Flag of Janské Lázně.svg description; with colors translation into the most essential languages. -- sarang사랑 10:33, 15 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Sarang Thank you for creating the template. I don't think there is a conversion table. Last year I talked to a local experienced Wikidata editor about creating items for every Czech municipal symbol with the help of Commons (charges from categories) and REKOS sometime in the future and I am meeting him again on Monday so I will bring this up since it's a similar task. TFerenczy (talk) 13:29, 16 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Tincture palette

edit

Another thing: are any specified tinctures for cs-CoAs ? As an example, for sk are 6 of possible 14 colors defined:

argentargent-dorazurecélestecarnationcendréegulesnaranjapurpuresabletennéverttransparent

(you may see the hex color codes when positionng the cursor on a color field)
If any rule for coloring exists, I can create the cs-palette; no matter when some files are drawn with "wrong" colors – it depends on the fact whether an 'official' agreement about colors exist. -- sarang사랑 11:23, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Sarang Light blue, orange and purple are very rare, used in like in 3–5 symbols. Tenné/Brown is common in general but again only in a very small number of symbols it is not used in proper context for wood and animals etc. so I don't think it warrants a special palette. As for hex values there is no consistency. TFerenczy (talk) 07:20, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Now all tinctures of the above sk-palette are activated, including rare and unused ones. When you think that it's a solution, the sk-palette can be used and no own cs-palette is needed? Anyway, all coa descriptions should have their tinctures specified; even when they do not conform - then the more desireable colors should be shown. But it is of not much use to show e.g. for blue #0A66AA when (almost) always #04A is used; then an own cs-palette is preferable -- sarang사랑 07:56, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

Obrázky

edit

Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys

edit

Hi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.

To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform). Both will run until approximately end October 2023.

  1. A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
  2. A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!

Many thanks! With kind regards, SFauconnier (talk) 11:19, 6 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

File:Flag of Nazi-Sionist Brazil.svg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

edit

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Tear. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2023 voting is open!

2022 Picture of the Year: Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Gadwall (Mareca strepera) in Nepal.

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2023 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighteenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2023) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and top 5% of most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
