the cherry trees have all been cut down and the moon lies in a bucket stars sleep on the ground shadowless, our forms confound green horse grazes on black flowers gazing softly into space yesterday we lived forever the grasses grew into the clouds night market full of lonesome ghouls shades dressed up in borrowed light looking for a little joy tonight or a hole in space and time green horse grazes on black flowers gazing softly into space yesterday we lived forever the grasses grew into the clouds little sparrow, when you sleep do you dream of stealing bread? or are you lost inside a storm, eyes painted gold, sky blood red? green horse grazes on black flowers gazing softly into space yesterday we lived forever the grasses grew into the clouds

silver web aches where the sky wept emerald blades burst from the black earth tessellation of pain tattoo of a pulse my opening mouth spews gold toads and radiant grains they turn to ash in your withering gaze pit of burning rot and roses ladders made of snakes we're sowing seeds in a bed of snow and I don't know what to say the light changes again faraway fields forever burning I ate the root I woke up underground purple sun phoenix rest in your great stone nest words don't sear or soar now with a cold and flightless sorrow my cup runs wild pit of burning rot and roses ladders made of snakes we're sowing seeds in a bed of snow and I don't know what to say the light changes again silver web aches where the sky wept emerald blades burst from the black earth tessellation of pain tattoo of a pulse my opening mouth spews gold toads and radiant grains they turn to ash in your withering gaze

at dawn no one arrives somewhere a bird goes blind somewhere a gavel sprouts wings and feathers at dawn no one arrives the roads that feed the dream were never roads at all but roots and rivers and veins in a valley full of pomegranate trees a thousand suns pulse and bleed light eats through time eats through me I'd like to lose my way forever go plant pomegranate seeds wreck of a heart and mind gears rust in the gloaming immolate your disguise let your shattered light shine cold, moonless night wants nothing from your life your body a mote against the open sky sweet slow fire eat the blight in a valley full of pomegranate trees a thousand suns pulse and bleed light eats through time eats through me I'd like to lose my way forever go plant pomegranate seeds

flame tree sings between us thunder and the rain melt into mist and silence my voice an offering stay with me for a while a light shines underground ring around the dancing tendrils til we all fall down flame tree sings between us thunder and the rain melt into mist and silence my voice an offering stay with me for a while and when I breathe out into swamps and deserts bombed out ribcages softly bleed away the edges flame tree sings between us thunder and the rain melt into mist and silence my voice an offering stay with me for a while a light shines underground

winter is past rains over and gone songbirds still singing in a fallen world flowers dilate new bodies form songbirds still singing in the scrapyard sun burns a hole unearthly eye songbirds still singing in scaffolds of fire delivered at last scarecrow sighs take me in your arms sparks could still rise heart of rags doused in kerosene burning clean burning clean the chapel is cold shadows dancing close masquerade ball sweat and starlight and strobe bells lacerate the desolate dawn songbirds still singing can we ever go home winter is past rains over and gone songbirds still singing in a fallen world heart of rags doused in kerosene burning clean burning clean

sun goes down on devils and swamp things heiresses and petulant kings salamanders and wolves bats and mourning doves daisies, daffodils, baby's breath, and foxglove merciful moonrise silver scythe cleave my voice from my blood sun goes down on grifters and night messengers ghost town mansions, nuclear poisoned earth sun goes down on the lovelorn and the besieged stillborn beasts, storms of swarming bees merciful moonrise silver scythe cleave my voice from my blood sun goes down on street preachers and talk show hosts termites and butterflies, ferris wheels covered in snow glass blowers, fire breathers, elegant thieves shimmering lakes and blight-stricken trees merciful moonrise silver scythe cleave my voice from my blood

about

This is my second collection of songs written and recorded at home during the pandemic, in the winter and early spring of 2021.

Some works that affected me deeply while I was working on this album were "The Babushkas of Chernobyl" by Holly Morris and Anne Bogart, the novels of George Eliot, "The Departure" by Lana Wilson, and the Zen poetry of Ryōkan.

song sculptures & ink beasts

I'm not writing the same song over and over so much as writing one long continuous song that will end when I die.
