Prehistory
Year | Event | |
---|---|---|
Unknown | The Fritz family comes into power as the ruling family of the tribe of Eldia.[1] | |
1003 B1 | Ymir, a young slave of the Eldian tribe, came in contact with an unknown anomaly while running away from Eldian soldiers. Obtaining the power of the Titans and becoming the Founding Titan.[2][3] | |
c. 995 B1 | Ymir uses her newfound power to cultivate the land, build bridges, and wage war against Eldia's enemies. The king of the Eldian tribe Fritz, pleased with Ymir's power and accomplishments, takes her as a concubine to bear three daughters: Maria, Rose, and Sheena.[4]
Ymir Fritz leads the Eldian tribe against Marley at the command of their king.[5] |
|
990 B1 | Ymir Fritz defends king Fritz from a thrown spear at the hands of a captive Marleyan soldier, choosing to succumb to death from her wound. King Fritz then feeds Ymir corpse to his daughters, who inherit Ymir's power of the Titans.[6]
Ymir Fritz's soul regains consciousness in the paths, a metaphysical timeless space where she creates the bodies of Titans and carries out the commands of the living royal family through the Founding Titan.[7] |
|
Unknown | Ymir's daughters bestow their power of the Titans unto their children, leading to the eventual creation of the Nine Titans.[8] The Founding Titan remains with the Fritz family while the eight remaining Titans are inherited by lesser Eldian families subservient to the Founding Titan and the royal bloodline.[2] Those who inherit the power of the Titans are destined to die after 13 years as Ymir did due to a phenomenon called the "Curse of Ymir."[9]
The Nine Titans continue to wage war against the nation of Marley, taking control of the continent and gradually transforming the Eldian tribe into the Eldian Empire.[2] Eldia conquers countless other civilizations as well using Pure Titans as cheap weapons of mass destruction.[10] This results in massive casualties and entire cultures being wiped out.[11] Eventually, in-fighting breaks out between the various Eldian families for control over the eight Titans, but the Fritz family, using the power of the Founding Titan, maintains balance.[12] The Ackerman clan, an Eldian bloodline resulted from the Eldian Empire's fiddling with the Subjects of Ymir,[13][14] becomes the sword and shield of the royal family, remaining close to Eldia's king for generations.[15] |
|
c. 370 B1 | Allegedly, Eldia wages war against Marley through Titan assaults at the "Fall of Lago", the "Devastation of Monte", and the "Ravaging of Valle", resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Marleyans.[16] |
History
Year | Event | |
---|---|---|
c. 240 | An epidemic leads to a significant drop in the worldwide population. With the power of the Founding Titan, the King of Eldia alters the biology of the Subjects of Ymir to give them immunity, and no Subject of Ymir dies to the epidemic.[17] | |
c. 8th Century | Eldia becomes allies with Hizuru.[18] | |
Unknown - c. 743: The Great Titan War | Karl Fritz, the 145th monarch of the Fritz family, inherits the Founding Titan and succeeds his predecessor as the monarch of Eldia. Ashamed of Eldia's history of genocide and civil war, Fritz conspires with the Tybur family, an Eldian house possessing the War Hammer Titan, to bring about Eldia's downfall.
The Tybur family fabricates the story of a Marleyan man named Helos to instigate the Eldian in-fighting and serve as a hero for the oppressed people of Marley.[19] Karl Fritz gathers most of the Fritz royal family to Paradis Island, Eldia's last remaining undisputed territory,[20] and moves the capital to that island, abandoning the conflict between the eight other Titan houses. He also invites Asians from the Shogun clan of Hizuru.[21] Some Fritz royals disagree with the King's decision to abandon the war, and remain behind in the mainland.[22] In the King's absence, the other eight Houses wage civil war.[23][12] The surviving Marleyans took advantage of this and incited a rebellion. The Tybur family is the first to side with the Marleyan uprising.[24] Over the course of the war, the Marleyans succeed in gaining the power of six more of the Nine Titans possessed by Eldia: the Colossus Titan, the Armored Titan, the Female Titan, the Beast Titan, the Cart Titan, and the Jaw Titan. Using the seven Titans, Marley gradually gains control of the continent.[23][25] King Fritz uses the Founding Titan to turn his subjects into Colossus Titans and orders them to form the three concentric Walls—Maria, Rose, and Sheena—to protect the remnants of Eldia.[26][27] |
|
c.743 | In order to stop the war, King Fritz sends a false message to the people of Marley, demanding that the surviving Eldians must be left alone or the Colossus Titans will "flatten the entire Earth."[28]
The Great Titan War ends. The nation of Marley would retain control of a large portion of the world beyond Paradis Island throughout the next century, using the Power of the Titans.[29] Hizuru's reputation is tarnished due to their association with Eldia.[30] The Eldians who did not flee overseas would become low-class citizens of Marley, forced to live in internment zones separate from the rest of the population.[31] After gaining control over the mainland, the Marley government promotes the story that Ymir Fritz had gained the Titan's power through a deal with the "Devil of All Earth," who was slain by their hero Helos during the war.[2][32][33] King Fritz informs both the Fritz family in Marley and the Tybur family that he has made a vow renouncing war to the Founding Titan, and that there will be no retaliation if and when Marley chooses to enact a final solution against Eldia.[34] However, he asks that he and his people should be given a brief age of peace before their retribution.[35] [36] The King uses the power of the Founding Titan to erase the memories of the Subjects of Ymir. The Subjects successfully forget their history, but minority groups not sharing the majority's common bloodline such as the Ackerman clan and the Asian clan are unaffected by the mind wipe. Many of the minority groups swear to secrecy at the King's request and gain noble status,[37] but the Ackerman and Asian groups give up said status, turn against King Fritz, and are hunted down.[38] For the safe-keeping of the Founding Titan, the royal family lives in hiding as the noble Reiss family while another bloodline takes the place of the Fritz family as a false monarchy.[39] The 145th Fritz King, now the First Reiss King, creates an underground cavern where the Founding Titan can be passed down to successors within the royal family. Some time afterward, a chapel is built above the entrance to the cavern.[40] |
|
743 | According to the traditional history taught in Paradis Island, this is when the entire human race except for the inhabitants of the island was devoured by the Titans.[41] | |
Unknown | The Titan Biology Research Society is founded in Marley. After researching the nature of the Titans and the Subjects of Ymir, they determine that the power of the Titans is carried across "paths" invisible to the eye, with all "paths" coordinating at the Founding Titan. The people of Marley name the Founding Titan the "Coordinate" of these paths.[42]
Plans are made for underground districts within the Walls, but these plans are eventually abandoned at the behest of the Church of the Walls.[43] |

At the orders of the Marleyan military, Grisha's father tells him the history of the Eldian people.[54] | |

Uri chooses to forgive Kenny and offer his apologies for the crimes committed against the Ackerman clan. Kenny becomes Uri's right hand man and eventually joins the First Interior Squad. The persecution of the Ackerman clan ends.[67] Kenny Ackerman discovers his little sister Kuchel Ackerman, a brothel worker in the underground, has become ill and died. Within the underground, he raises her son Levi Ackerman.[68] |

|
832 | Zeke learns that the Public Security Authorities are coming close to finding the Eldian Restorationists.[74] On the advice of Tom Ksaver, Zeke turns his parents in and gains Marley's trust.[75] Grisha and the Restorationists are arrested by the Public Security Authorities.[76]
After torturous interrogation at the hands of the Marleyans overseen by Officer Kruger, the Eldian Restorationists are sent to Paradis Island. Many of the Restorationists, including Dina Fritz, are turned into Pure Titans. Kruger turns against officer Gross before Grisha was to be killed, revealing himself to be the Owl and an inheritor of one of the Nine Titans. In his Attack Titan form, Kruger kills the soldiers of Marley.[77][78] Kruger informs Grisha of his past, the nature of the Titan's power and the "Curse of Ymir," and his desire to see the Founding Titan retrieved from the Walls. Grisha reluctantly accepts the duty from Kruger, turning into a Titan and eating Kruger, inheriting the power of the Attack Titan. Grisha transforms for the first time and uses the Attack Titan to safely reach the Walls.[79][80][49] Some time later, Keith Shadis of the Survey Corps discovers Grisha Yeager outside the Walls of Shiganshina District in a state of amnesia. He takes him into Shiganshina and teaches him of human life within the Walls.[81] |

He proceeds to murder all members of the Reiss family but Rod Reiss, who escapes.[125] Grisha takes Eren into a forest where he urges him to return to Shiganshina and enter the basement of their old home, before injecting him with Titan serum.[126] As a Pure Titan, Eren eats Grisha, inheriting both the dormant Founding Titan and the power of the Attack Titan.[127] A few days after Wall Maria's fall, Rod Reiss visits his illegitimate daughter Historia Reiss, planning on taking her in to his family. Fragments of glowing stone from the Reiss Chapel cave are used for sources of light, increasing productivity and allowing for nighttime scouting missions to plot out a route to Shiganshina District.[249]
Eren's new hardening ability is used to create an Executioner from Hell where Trost's outer gate once stood, which begins to clear Titans from Wall Maria.[251] The Survey Corps' increased popularity causes many young soldiers to enlist or reassign.[252] A council of military leaders decides that Levi Ackerman should be entrusted with Kenny's Titan serum.[253] Zeke arrives in Shiganshina District, meeting Reiner and Bertolt. After a battle with Reiner, he decides that they will remain in Shiganshina District to await the arrival of the Survey Corps in order to retrieve the Founding Titan from Eren.[254] Squad Levi visits Keith Shadis to learn of his involvement with Grisha Yeager. Keith tells them of his past with Grisha.[255] |

Eren uses his hardening ability to seal the breach in the outer gate.[261]
Before the inner gate can be sealed, Zeke as the Beast Titan traps the Survey Corps in Shiganshina with a Titan army, starting a battle between the Warriors and the Survey Corps.[262] Eren and Reiner battle in their Titan forms in Shiganshina.[263] During the battle, the Survey Corps attacks Reiner with Thunder Spears, blowing Reiner's head off.[264] Bertolt transforms into the Colossus Titan above Shiganshina, killing most of Hange's squad in the explosive energy of the transformation.[265] The Beast Titan bombards the Survey Corps to the north with a barrage of stones and boulders.[266] Erwin Smith leads a last ditch frontal charge into the line of fire as a distraction, which results in the complete annihilation of the cavalry, save for one soldier by the name of Floch Forster.[267][268] Levi successfully ambushes and defeats the Beast Titan, cutting Zeke out of its nape. Before Levi can kill him, Zeke is rescued by Pieck in her Cart Titan form, and the two flee towards Shiganshina.[269] Hange and Squad Levi attack the regenerated Armored Titan. They defeat it with Thunder Spears, with Mikasa landing the finishing blow that blows Reiner out of its nape.[270] Armin Arlert sacrifices himself in a diversionary attack against the Colossus Titan, whom Eren defeats after leaving his Titan form, cutting Bertolt out of its nape.[271] Reiner tells Hange to pass a letter from Ymir to Historia, shortly before Zeke and Pieck arrive to rescue him.[272] The three Warriors flee Shiganshina district.[273] Both Armin and Erwin are found to be alive but on the brink of death, creating a difficult choice as to who should be saved with the Titan serum held by Levi.[274] Ultimately, it is decided by Levi that Armin will be given the serum. Armin, in his new Titan form, eats Bertolt Hoover, and Erwin Smith dies.[275] Eren, Mikasa, Levi, and Hange investigate the basement of the Yeager household, where they discover three books left by Grisha detailing his past in Marley and his knowledge of the Eldian-Marleyan conflict.[276][277] |

Shortly after the return of the Survey Corps, Queen Historia arrives in Trost District and reads Ymir's letter. Eren and Mikasa are released from their imprisonment early with Commander-in-Chief Darius Zackly's approval, and a meeting is held to discuss the findings from the basement. Eren realizes a loophole in the First King's will involving touching a royal-blooded Titan as he did with Dina, but chooses not to speak of it out of concern for Historia's fate.[279][280] The meeting concludes with the decision to make the basement revelations public knowledge.[281] The nine survivors of the battle of Shiganshina District are honored in ceremony by Queen Historia.[282] |

Marley sends out their first survey fleet to Paradis Island.[288] They are intercepted by the Survey Corps, who intern the soldiers present with the help of Eren and Armin's Titans. On-board an assortment of wine bottles laced with Zeke's spinal fluid,[289] Niccolo and the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers members Yelena and Onyankopon defect to the people of the Walls' side, giving them information about Marley and their technology, devising plans on how to modernize the island, including the usage of semi-automatic pistols, bolt-action rifles, railways, and harbor plans, and Zeke's secret plan to save the Eldian people.[290] Other Marleyan soldiers are eventually convinced to lend their aid to Paradis Island.[291] |
|
852 | Kiyomi Azumabito of the nation of Hizuru visits the island of Paradis, with the intention of forming an alliance.[292]
Kiyomi reveals that Mikasa Ackerman is a long-lost descendant of the Azumabito clan, making her the equivalent of royalty in Hizuru.[293] Kiyomi explains the three conditions needed to protect Paradis island from external invasion. Eren objects to the third condition of maintaining possession of a Titan with royal blood, as it is not only risky, but would mean sacrificing Historia's children for their own survival.[294] |
|

On Paradis island, Yelena meets with Eren and discusses Zeke's plan with Floch eavesdropping. He pretends to go along with the plan and tells Floch to do the same.[296] Eren warns Historia that the Military Police intends to immediately have Zeke be devoured by her, as soon as he arrives on the island.[297] The Survey Corps has its most experienced members infiltrate Marley, in order to attempt to find a peaceful resolution to Eldia's conflict with the outer world.[298] While the Survey Corps are in Marley, Eren rescues a young boy named Ramzi from being beaten by three Marleyan merchants, taking the boy back to his village. Eren then breaks down in tears and apologizes to the boy for the atrocities he will soon commit.[299] Ramzi's grandfather invites Eren and the scouts to his camp, where they have a good time until being found intoxicated by Hange, Levi, and Onyankopon.[300] The Association to Protect the Subjects of Ymir give a speech at an international forum hosted in Marley. A speaker defends only the Subjects of Ymir who are not Eldian, and tells everyone to reserve their hatred for the "devils" of Paradis Island. Accepting that a peaceful resolution is implausible, Eren abandons the Survey Corps and enlists as an Eldian soldier in Marleyan service, as part of his plan made with Zeke.[301] |
|
850-854: | Marley slowly gains control over the seas in its war with the Mid-East Allied Forces, though half of the outdated navy is lost through the course of the war.[302]
Meanwhile, the Allies develop anti-Titan artillery to gain a significant advantage on land conflicts.[303] Over the course of three years, 32 scouting ships are sent from Marley to Paradis Island. None of the ships return.[304] Marley's war with the Mid-East Allied Forces culminates at Fort Slava, a coastal fortress. While the Warriors under Marleyan command besiege the fort, Zeke uses his Beast Titan's power to drop parachuting Eldians over Fort Slava, turning them into Titans as an airstrike. Reiner's Armored Titan destroys most of the anti-Titan artillery present at Fort Slava, and the Beast Titan tosses artillery rounds at the nearby Mid-East fleet, destroying it. The result of this battle brings an end to the Marley Mid-East War.[305] |

When the Attack Titan is overpowered by the War Hammer, Mikasa Ackerman uses a barrage of Thunder Spears to bring the Titan down.[318] Eren discovers the War Hammer Titan's true body encased in a crystal below ground and seizes it, but is unable to break the crystal open.[319] The Survey Corps, equipped with anti-personnel vertical maneuvering equipment enter the battle and engage the Marleyan soldiers. The Jaw, Cart, and Beast Titans join the expanding battle shortly after.[320] During the ensuing conflict, the Survey Corps initially face difficulty against the Warriors, however, they gain the upper hand shortly after Armin Arlert uses his Colossus Titan to destroy a docking fleet.[321] Levi neutralizes the Beast Titan, and the Cart Titan is defeated by an attack led by Jean.[322] The Jaw Titan fights aggressively against Eren, but is also defeated. Eren uses the Jaw Titan's powerful jaws to crack open Lara's crystal, inheriting the War Hammer Titan. Eren then prepares to eat the Jaw Titan, but is stopped by the Armored Titan, who rescues Galliard before collapsing.[323] Eren and Mikasa reunites with Armin and the rest of the Survey Corps aboard their getaway airship.[324] Gabi and Falco also board the airship, where Gabi shoots and kills Sasha.[325] They are brought to Zeke Yeager aboard the airship, who is revealed to be on the side of the Paradis Island Eldians all along.[326] The Survey Corps proceed to make their escape from Liberio.[327] |

The Survey Corps arrives at the same restaurant shortly after to question him. Gabi reveals she is a Marleyan warrior and that she killed Sasha to Niccolo, making him hit Falco with a wine bottle. The Survey Corps breaks up the conflict, and Niccolo reveals that Zeke's spinal fluid had been inside numerous wine bottles served by Marleyan workers to many in the military elite, including the one Falco was hit by.[341] Yeagerists enter the restaurant, taking Survey Corps soldiers captive. The Yeagerists, who have refused Pixis's invitation to negotiate, demand Hange to take them to Zeke's location.[342] Meanwhile, Eren meets with Mikasa and Armin, but the discussion goes awry and both of the latter are also taken captive as per Eren's orders.[343] Zeke attempts to escape from Levi by transforming the Survey Corps guarding him into Titans.[344] However, Levi defeats Zeke after killing all the Titans and captures him again.[345] As Levi rides back to the Walls, Zeke detonates a Thunder Spear, catching both Levi and himself in the resulting blast.[346] Before Zeke can succumb to his wounds, he is saved when a pure Titan stuffs him inside of its stomach, allowing Ymir Fritz[347] to rebuild his body in the Paths dimension.[348] The Yeagerists stop by the 109th Training Corps training camp in Shiganshina to get more followers among the trainees, badly beating Keith Shadis in the process.[349] A group led by Floch then have Hange lead them to Zeke. They find Zeke emerging from a Titan's carcass, and prepare to rendezvous with Eren in Shiganshina. Picking up Colt's anti-Titan riffle, Gabi shoots Eren through the neck, blowing his head cleanly off the rest of his body, moments before Zeke and Eren make contact. Zeke catches Eren's head before the latter's brain activity ceases, transporting both of them into the Paths realm.[355] Inside the Paths, Eren reveals to Zeke that he will not go through with the euthanasia plan, however Eren finds that he is unable to use the Founding Titan's power via Ymir Fritz. Zeke accesses Grisha Yeager's memories through Eren's Attack Titan.[356] While viewing Grisha's memories, the two brothers witness Grisha inside the cavern bellow the Reiss Chapel pleading with Frieda Reiss to save the people of Shiganshina from the Titan advance into the city. When Frieda refuses, Grisha is unable to transform, as he thinks himself unable to kill children, regardless of their Reiss bloodline. Eren proclaims that he will destroy the entire world beyond Paradis while expressing sympathy towards Ymir, telling her that she does not need to serve anyone, that she can make the choice of what comes next.[359] The anomalous creature that granted Ymir her Titan powers emerges from Eren's body and connects to his head.
