Title:How smooth can the convex hull of a Lévy path be?
View PDFAbstract:We describe the rate of growth of the derivative $C'$ of the convex minorant of a Lévy path on a set of times, recently characterised in our preceding paper, where $C'$ increases continuously. Since the convex minorant is piecewise linear, $C'$ may exhibit such behaviour either at the vertex time $\tau_s$ of slope $s$ or at time $0$. The analysis at times $0$ and $\tau_s$ each require different tools, but an interesting diagonal connection arises: the structure of the upper (resp. lower) functions at time $0$ is similar to that of the lower (resp. upper) functions at time $\tau_s$. Even though the convex hull depends on the entire path, we show that the fluctuations of the derivative $C'$ depend only on the fine structure of the small jumps of the Lévy process and do not depend on the time horizon. For Lévy processes attracted to a stable process, we establish sharp results essentially characterising the modulus of continuity of the derivative of the boundary of the convex hull at such times up to sublogarithmic factors. As a consequence of the relation between the lower fluctuations of the convex minorant and the path of the Lévy process, we obtain novel results for the growth rate at $0$ for the meanders of a wide class of Lévy processes.
