Fate
(KIA) Tries to pull Kate into freezing water, but instead has her neck broken, killing her, as her lifeless body sinks into cold water.
Esther Coleman (Real name: Leena Klammer) was a 33 year old woman with a disorder that stunted her growth; thus making her appear as a 10 year old girl. She was born in Estonia and grew up seducing pedophilic men.
She was portrayed by Isabelle Fuhrman who also played Clove in The Hunger Games.
Leena Klammer was born in Estonia on April 20, 1976 and she was suffering from hypopituitarism which made her unable to grow and stuck in her child-like body.
Little was known about her background, but according to Dr. Värava from the Saarne Institute, she was a serial killer who already slaughtered 7 men and being caught and placed in the Saarne Institute. She was one of the most wild and violent patients who always hurt the staff employees and eventually made Dr. Värava put her in a straightjacket. However, she managed to free herself by constantly fighting to get out of it, but leaving her with scars around her wrists and neck in the process. She always avoided being caught due to having a child-like body by pretending to be a child named Esther and was adopted by the Sullivans afterward. She tried to seduce her adopted father, but she failed. As a result, she killed the Sullivan Family and burned the house down. Later, she lived in a local orphanage in America and nobody from the orphanage suspected her true identity.
Kate grew suspicious when Esther expressed far more knowledge about sex than it would be expected for a child that was her age. Esther further antagonized Kate by cutting the flowers that are planted as a memorial to her stillborn child which was casually revealed when another woman was flirting with John (Given that he previously had an affair) and read intimate details from Kate's diary. She was alarmed further when Sister Abigail who was the head of the orphanage warned her and John about Esther's tendency to be around when things went wrong. Esther overheard this and killed Sister Abigail by bludgeoning her to death with a hammer. She convinced Max to help her with this and they hid the evidence in their treehouse. A few days later when Esther was at the school, she opened Daniel's backpack by causing his books to fall out when he was walking up the stairs. Kate got out of the car to help him, but she left it running. Esther came back to the car, putted the gear selector in Neutral and took the parking brake off and caused the car to roll down the hill with Max who was still inside.
Daniel decided to retrieve the hammer that was used to kill Sister Abigail to prove Esther's guilt. However, when he announced his plans to Max, it was overheard by Esther. On the next day, Daniel went to the treehouse and found it unlocked. He entered the treehouse and searched for it, but he found nothing. Esther appeared behind him and took all of the evidence from Max's bag and dropped them on the floor of the treehouse. She took the lighter fluid out and sprayed on the evidence. Daniel attempted to stop her, but Esther set the evidence and the treehouse ablaze before Daniel did anything. She left the treehouse that was on fire and locked Daniel inside and attempted to kill him. Daniel climbed out from the treehouse through the window and tried to escape from the fire only to end up falling to the ground and was injured and unconscious. Esther tried to kill him with a brick, but Max shoved her out of the way just in time by preventing her from killing Daniel. Daniel was hospitalized due to his neck injury and abdominal bleeding. Esther unsuccessfully tried to kill Daniel at the hospital, but the doctors saved him. Kate who was knowing what happened furiously slapped Esther and knocked her down and was immediately subdued and sedated.
Esther tried to seduce a drunken John who finally realized that Kate was telling the truth. He threatened to send her back to the orphanage. Esther who was angry and hurt about being spurned ransacked her room and took her clothing off, unwrapped her breasts and removed the ribbons around her wrists and neck. As Kate was coming out of sedation, she received a call on her cell phone from the Saarne Institute. Dr. Värava (Karel Roden) revealed that Esther was actually a 33 year old woman from Estonia named Leena Klammer. She had hypopituitarism which was a disorder that stunted her physical growth and caused proportional dwarfism and spent most of her life by posing as a little girl as a result. The doctor told Kate that Leena was dangerous and especially violent (Having killed at least seven people before being committed and an entire family that adopted her after she escaped). She was putted in a straightjacket and she got scarred from trying to get out of it which explained why she wore those ribbons. At home, Esther who was hurt from being scolded killed her adoptive father named John. Max witnessed her father being stabbed by Leena and hid in a hamper in her closet. Kate rushed home only to find John dead. Leena got a revolver from John's safe and shot Kate on the arm and hunted Kate down before she went to search for Max. While firing at Max in their greenhouse, Kate managed to break through from above Leena/Esther and knocked her out.
Leena followed Kate outside to a frozen pond and lunged at Kate where they fell and struggled onto the ice as Max watched from a hill above the pond. Max maneuvered herself to grab the gun that was dropped by Kate during the struggle. She fired at Leena, but she hit the ice instead which broke by causing Kate and Leena/Esther to drop into the water below. After a brief struggle under the ice which Kate was stabbed in the leg and Leena was elbowed in the face, Kate climbed out partially followed by Leena who was begging Kate not to let her die addressed her as "Mommy" while holding a knife behind her back. Kate furiously responded, "I am not your f**king Mommy!" and kicked Leena in her face by breaking her neck and sending her back into the pond who was dead with the blood rushing through the water while Max and Kate are met by the police moments after.
Alternative Ending[]
In the alternative ending, there was no fight between her and Kate. Kate and Max escaped and survived while Leena rushed to her room when the police came and she re-took her "Esther" appearance while she was singing "The Glory of Love". She faced the police with her "Esther" appearance, sweetly greeted them with the scars on her face and went downstairs. Her fate in the alternative ending was unknown though she was possibly arrested by the police or evaded capture.
She was similar to a few villains.
Penny Peterson: Both are cruel, heartless, violent, evil, and emotionless females. While Penny reformed, Esther did not.
Sentinel Prime (Transformers Film Series): Both are aggressive, cruel, destructive, and selfish. They also begged the protagonists (Kate in Esther's case, Optimus in Sentinel's case) not to kill them, but they do anyway. (Esther getting kicked in the neck by Kate, and Sentinel getting shot in the back and then the head by Optimus using Megatron's fusion shotgun).
Trivia[]
Esther/Leena Klammer shared similarities with Ling Fook-Wing from the film, Murderer:
They both suffered from Hypopituitarism.
Both are adopted by the protagonists to replace their dead child.
Both are evil-geniuses who tricked the families into adopting them.
Both antagonized the main characters (Kate Coleman and Ling) and successfully tricked their spouses (John Coleman and Hazel).
Both are dressed-maturely near the climax.
Both fought with the main character in the end of the movie, but Fook-wing was never killed by Ling and Esther/Leena was killed by Kate (If it did not include the alternate ending of Orphan where Esther/Leena did not have to fight with Kate and she escaped.)
In the ending credits, you could see a photograph of her when she was in the Saarne Institute, a torn paper about her disorder and her nationality and a torn photograph of the Sullivan Family.
