GOLB was a malevolent entity who is the embodiment of chaos and disorder. He inhabits an unknown dimension and served as the overarching antagonist of Adventure Time and major character in it's spin-off series Fionna & Cake.
At the end of the original series, GOLB was summoned to Ooo in the middle of a war where both sides then joined forces to battle this threat. However, GOLB proved to be too powerful and was only truly defeated after Betty Grof sacrificed herself to merge with it, becoming a new entity known as GOLBetty.

Appearance[]
Originally, GOLB had a massive muscular red body and a cubic head topped with a pyramid with the bottom half fraying upward. He had four round yellow eyes with green pupils, with the two eyes on top slightly larger than the two below. Up close GOLB had cracks around his eyes and mouth. He also had some hard spikes that spread over his lower head. He had a forked tongue that is large and purple. His hands had three fingers and his feet had two toes and one dewclaw. He had orange-yellow talons on his fingers and toes. Several green blocks can be seen floating around its head.
After fusing with Betty, GOLB's appearance is altered, appearing as red giant with tall but slimmer body with a cubic/pyramid head that somewhat similar in appearance to Grob Gob Glob Grod's but the body shape appears to be that of Betty's when she was a wizard, complete with a yellow ribbon and bowtie adorned their head. Their eyes are blue instead of yellow with green pupils. The top row of eyes are slanted and almond-shaped, resembling Betty's pre-Mushroom War glasses and the lower set of eyes have a line between them, making each eye look like the lens to a pair of glasses. They also wore a red cape that tied to the yellow bowtie.
In Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, GOLBetty's appearance is slightly different from the last time they appeared. Their red cape is gone and GOLB's hard spikes seems to grown back again and spread over their body. The yellow ribbon and bowtie on their head seems to be tattered. The green blocks that floating around their head are also have increased massively in numbers.
History[]
He is first seen briefly at the end of "Puhoy." After old Finn dies in the Pillow World and is being warped back to his own reality, he bounces off GOLB's tongue.
He is mentioned later in "You Forgot Your Floaties." While inside Magic Man's mind, Betty witnesses a memory of him and Grob Gob Glob Grod discussing GOLB at an unknown date in the past. It is revealed that GOLB attacked Mars at some point and "took" Magic Man's wife, Margles. Grob Gob Glob Grod believes that GOLB will return and Magic Man agrees, using the threat of GOLB as a pretext for building a security system on Mars that takes the shape of Margles. Later, Magic Man changes his mind, claiming that Grob Gob Glob Grod is wrong and GOLB is "probably not coming back."
The Lich calls himself the "last scholar of GOLB" in "Whispers" and "Casper & Nova".
In "Temple of Mars," Betty speaks to Magic Man (now known as King Man) about her plan to both save Simon from the ice crown and to get back Margles from GOLB.
In "Come Along With Me", Betty and Normal Man use Maja the sky witch to summon GOLB to the Land of Ooo, where he wreaks havoc by combining the candy people's mass to create hostile wraiths. Upon seeing him, Ice King has a flashback to an indeterminate date in the past when he researched GOLB as Simon. In the flashback, Simon describes GOLB as a "mysterious entity who embodies chaos," and states that "his presence is felt in every crevice where chaos lurks." When GOLB arrives, he swallows Finn, Betty, and Ice King. Within the stomach of GOLB, its digestive system begins to rip them apart, layer by layer 'timemathically'; Reversing them through different stages of their lifetime and thus reverting anything that they may have had or been in the present, Because of this, Ice King and the crown are fully separated, leaving Simon Petrikov behind with his original body and sanity intact and the corrupted crown restored to its original wish-granting form. The three begin hearing a song of peace and happiness coming from outside, one that opposes GOLB's essence and embodiment of chaos. This causes an opening to form in GOLB's stomach that allows them to escape. Betty pushes Simon and Finn out, opting to stay behind and try to use the crown to banish GOLB from their world. She repeatedly wishes for GOLB's banishment and disappearance from the world, only for nothing to happen. Coming to the conclusion that GOLB's power simply surpasses that of the crown, Betty finally settles on another wish: "the power to keep Simon safe". This wish succeeds, causing her to merge with GOLB's being into a single entity. The newly-created GOLBetty exits Ooo, leaving the Ice Crown behind.
At the end of "Jerry" Simon's spell sends him, the Lich and the Scarab to her domain. It is revealed that while the Lich dedicated his existence to GOLB, he found no satisfaction after destroying all life in his name. The Lich believed that doing so would earn him the admiration of GOLB, though this proved to be false.
In "Casper & Nova", Simon finds The Lich praying to GOLBetty. When he asks her what to do, she wordlessly disassembles the Lich before turning him into one of the many tetris piece-like blocks that floats in her domain. Simon then apologizes to GOLBetty for being unable to live in Ooo and attempts to put on the crown. However, GOLBetty stops him, sending his mind into Shermy while leaving his body in a semiconscious state. While Simon is in this state, The Scarab appears and attempts to kill him. However, GOLBetty interferes, dividing the Scarab into numerous insect-like creatures whenever he tried to hurt Simon.
In "Cheers" after Simon's mind returns, he apologizes to GOLBetty, having come to understand that while he does genuinely love Betty, he allowed her to sacrifice her own happiness for him repeatedly. When Simon flashes back to his confession to Betty at the bus stop, the vision of Betty transforms into GOLBetty after boarding the bus. After Simon gives Fionna's world to her, GOLBetty picks up Simon and sends him flying away into the void and transfoms itself into blue energy.
Abilities[]
After GOLB "took" Margles, Magic Man travelled across the multiverse to find her, searching countless dimensions and dead worlds to find Margles but failed to find her, stating that she only existed in memory and feeling and no where else, suggesting that all alternative versions of Margles had been "taken" too. He eventually went to Prismo's Time Room and wished that she would return, but Prismo was unable to successfully bring her back. GOLB's powers make him one of the most powerful entities in the multiverse, if not the most powerful one. Even the magic power of Evergreen's Crown could not destroy him or force him to leave Ooo, but was able to indirectly merge him with Betty. GOLB most likely traps his victims inside of his mouth as mentioned in "Temple of Mars" and attempted in "Puhoy" although Finn managed to bounce off of GOLB's tongue.
In "Come Along With Me," GOLB is shown digesting things he eats by breaking them down layer by layer and resetting them to their original, essential form. This is why Betty was able to make a wish with the Crown. GOLB was also shown to release a dangerous gas from his mouth which causes beings to become beasts infused with discord. These beasts that created from his breath has tremendous strength and durability - being able to cause a devastating damage and can immediately regenerate after being destroyed.
When Betty fused with GOLB, they unleashed a strong shockwave that drained all color from the surroundings and knocked back almost everyone in the proximity. This shockwave also banished the beasts created from GOLB's breath.
In "Casper & Nova" and "Cheers", GOLBetty turned the Lich into a green block piece and divide Scarab into multiple mites with just a glare from their eyes. GOLBetty also petrified Simon's body and transferred his consciousness to Shermy's body, making Shermy feel as a prisoner in his own head. GOLBetty was also capable of detaching the Fionna-world from Simon's mind and sent him away from their realm with a blow, allowing him to return to the Land of Ooo. After sending Simon away, GOLBetty turned themselves and the shapes surrounding them into blue energy, though what exactly that means remains unknown.
Weaknesses[]
As GOLB is the embodiment of discord and chaos, his ultimate weakness is harmony and peace. In "Come Along With Me," GOLB is weakened by the characters singing "Time Adventure"; this suspends GOLB's creations and tears a hole through GOLB, which allows Finn and Simon to escape digestion. Despite this, GOLB was not harmed in any meaningful way during the ordeal and quickly recovered.

Trivia[]
- GOLB's name was originally revealed by Adam Muto on Spring.[1] It was officially revealed later in "You Forgot Your Floaties."
- GOLB may have attacked Mars at Olympus Mons because that is where Magic Man planned to install the defense system meant to protect Mars from him.
- GOLB's backside appears in promotional art for "Astral Plane."
- In "Whispers," The Farmworld Lich refers to himself as "the last scholar of GOLB", though the exact meaning behind this, as well as the full nature of his connection to GOLB, is unknown.
- GOLB's ability to erase things from existence is possibly related to his personification of entropy and chaos, given information lost to entropy is unrecoverable.
- There are several similarities between GOLB and Grob Gob Glob Grod:
- GOLB's head has a shape similar to that of Grob Gob Glob Grod's headwear.
- Finn meets GOLB when he dies in the Pillow World. In "The New Frontier," Jake claims that Grob Gob Glob Grod rules Glob World, where people in the Land of Ooo go when they die.
- Both have four of a certain body part: GOLB has four eyes and Grob Gob Glob Grod has four faces.
- "GOLB" is an anagram of "Glob".
- GOLB has a number of blocks floating around him that look similar to those seen at the end of "The Lich" and "Finn the Human".
- In "Casper & Nova" it is shown that GOLBetty can forcibly transform someone into one of these blocks, as she does it with The Lich.
- GOLB was designed by Tom Herpich.[2]
- GOLB is similar to several H. P. Lovecraft cosmic entities, most specifically Azathoth, the "blind idiot" god embodying chaos and the creator of the universe.
- GOLB is similar to the Zoroastrian anti-god Angra Mainyu in that he is a deity-like figure (as opposed to the Satan-like Lich) symbolizing evil and chaos as well as essentially idiotic. Both entities are curiously similar in that the protagonists retrieve loved ones from their bowels: in Zoroastrian myth, Jamshid inserts his fist in Angra Mainyu's anus to retrieve his brother while Jake takes advantage of "Time Adventure" to free Finn, Simon and Betty from GOLB's stomach.
- In "Casper & Nova", the first prayer that The Lich is uttering to GOLBetty is an Orphic hymn about the God Phanes, a primeval firstborn deity from a cosmic egg at the beginning of the universe.
- The hymn reads as follows: "Ineffable, hidden, brilliant scion, whose motion is whirring, you scattered the dark mist that lay before your eyes and, flapping your wings, you whirled about, and throughout this world you brought pure light."
