[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 02:58, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Centuries in Leipzig to Category:History of Leipzig
- Nominator's rationale: merge, redundant category layer with only one subcategory. The parent category isn't populated well enough for a further diffusion by century. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:17, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. NLeeuw (talk) 14:26, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge and rename as nominated. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 02:58, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Propose merging Category:Middle Eastern diaspora to Category:West Asian diaspora
- Propose renaming Category:Middle Eastern diaspora in Africa to Category:West Asian diaspora in Africa
- Propose renaming Category:Middle Eastern diaspora in Asia to Category:West Asian diaspora in Asia
- Propose renaming Category:Middle Eastern diaspora in Europe to Category:West Asian diaspora in Europe
- Propose renaming Category:Middle Eastern diaspora in North America to Category:West Asian diaspora in North America
- Propose renaming Category:Middle Eastern diaspora in South America to Category:West Asian diaspora in South America
- Nominator's rationale: Follow-up of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 August 16#Category:Society of the Middle East. West Asia and the Middle East largely overlap, so we do not need both category trees. It is better to keep West Asia because it is consistent with other subcategories in Category:Asian diasporas. Purge Egypt if/where needed. Sakakami (talk) 20:09, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Merge and rename, or reverse merge, the Middle East and West Asia are too similar to keep them in separate category trees. See also this parallel discussion. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:21, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- The above is preserved as an archive of the discussion. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
Category:Spoiler campaign
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: delete. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:26, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SUBJECTIVECAT. Labeling any campaign as a spoiler is a blatant partisan attempt to smear it. User:Namiba 17:38, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Keep- the term spoiler campaign means any campaign that is not able to win the race but can affect the outcome. this is a descriptive term and a useful category Superb Owl (talk) 17:40, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- You just wrote that article 3 days ago and it has also been nominated for deletion. It is a matter of opinion, which cannot be used in categories.--User:Namiba 17:41, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Keep- the term spoiler campaign means any campaign that is not able to win the race but can affect the outcome. this is a descriptive term and a useful category Superb Owl (talk) 17:40, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. A subjective term that is often used pejoratively, it is not appropriate for a category. Sal2100 (talk) 19:50, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

Category:Snake Oil
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: delete. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:25, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: WP:NONDEFINING. The category refers to Snake Oil (TV series), but only contains the host (David Spade) and an assortment of topics/objects that were featured on the show. There are not enough directly related articles for an eponymous category. 1857a (talk) 17:26, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: merge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:25, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Propose upmerging Category:Cars launched into space to Category:Passive satellites and Category:Space debris
- Nominator's rationale: Unlikely to grow to 5 items in the near future, upmerge for now. Category:Car classifications does not really apply. NLeeuw (talk) 15:44, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:05, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: rename. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:25, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Consistent with the main page: Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association Amigao (talk) 15:06, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Speedy rename per WP:C2D. NLeeuw (talk) 15:45, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
Revert article move, for now, this should require an RM. "Catholic Patriotic" is obviously Chinese, but is it part of the common name? Marcocapelle (talk) 17:09, 27 August 2024 (UTC)- @Marcocapelle The official website says:
1962年召开中国天主教第二届全国代表大会时,更名为“中国天主教爱国会”,并一直沿用至今
, autotranslated: When the Second National Congress of Chinese Catholics was held in 1962, it was renamed the "Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association" and has been used ever since. It seems that the original name was Chinese Catholic Anti-Imperialist Patriotic Movement, although I can't quite narrow down the exact Mandarin Chinese characters (it's somewhere in the phrase自下而上地发起了中国天主教反帝爱国运动
). - At any rate, a RM/TR was made and carried out a few minutes before the nomination, so I see nothing wrong with it. NLeeuw (talk) 17:30, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- My mistake. I saw the article was moved by nom and too quickly assumed it was a unilateral move. My apologies for this. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:33, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- No worries, it can happen to the best of us, including you. :) NLeeuw (talk) 22:16, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

Category:2024 massacres of Palestinians
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: merge with no prejudice against recreation if the category can be appropriately populated. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:23, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Dual upmerge. There's no need to diffuse to the intersection of nationality+year (although see Category:1948 massacres of Palestinians (15), given that there is only one massacre in the category. If this category is kept it should be renamed to Massacres of Palestinians during the Israeli-Hamas War. Mason (talk) 13:16, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Dual merge for now, but reinstate when more articles are written. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:11, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

- Propose renaming Category:British jazz radio programs to Category:British jazz radio programmes
- Nominator's rationale: The name should use British spelling. Headhitter (talk) 13:03, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: delete. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:20, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: An unhelpful intersection: any ideology (esp. one as vague as this) hasn't been intersected with occupation, and it should stay that way. It's not more helpful than merely Category:Nationalists. Remsense ‥ 论 07:40, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per Nom. Not a helpful category, nor a defining one for most of the entries. Category displays aspects of guilt by association. Rotary Engine talk 10:40, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. I agree with Rotary Engine. This intersection is way too subjective. Mason (talk) 13:35, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Delete, trivial intersection. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:15, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose Nationalism as an ideology has had quite an effect on various revolutionary movements. Why should ideology be ignored in categorisation?Dimadick (talk) 13:04, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- I'm not sure how revolutionary movements got foregrounded. Again, can you articulate how either this or a theoretical Category:Nationalist revoluionaries could be more useful than just Category:Nationalists? Remsense ‥ 论 15:51, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Remsense, you did not bother to read the article Nationalism? We have entire segments of Nationalism as a motivation in the French Revolution, the Greek War of Independence, the Serbian Revolution, the Young Bosnia revolutionaries in Austria-Hungary, the November Uprising, the January Uprising, the April Uprising of 1876, and the Indian independence movement. Revolutionaries trying to create nation-states by breaking away from multiethnic empires. Dimadick (talk) 09:14, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- I haven't read that article, but I was already well aware of each of those events vis à vis the history of nationalism. The point I'm making is the category is just "heads of state and government", which does not really overlap with "political revolutionary" enough for the point you're making to really work at all. Remsense ‥ 论 09:25, 29 August 2024 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: rename as nominated. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:17, 3 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: WP:CONCISE, match parent article List of attacks on Jewish institutions. Longhornsg (talk) 05:18, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
Also rename related categories:
- Category:21st-century attacks on synagogues and Jewish communal organizations in the United States
- Category:21st-century attacks on synagogues and Jewish communal organizations
- Category:20th-century attacks on synagogues and Jewish communal organizations
- Category:20th-century attacks on synagogues and Jewish communal organizations in the United States
- @Longhornsg: you should still tag these category pages, see WP:CFD. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:17, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- done, thanks. Longhornsg (talk) 00:40, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Rename per nom or else, if institutions is too vague, split between synagogues and communal organizations. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:19, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:British abbots. I commend everyone involved in this discussion for keeping it civil and being willing to both explain your points of view and change them in the face of new information :) HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 03:00, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Propose renaming Category:Abbots from the British Isles to Category:British abbots
- Nominator's rationale: Rename (probably speedy). Perhaps I'm missing something really obvious, but I don't see why this category isn't called British abbots. (Obviously, we'd need to remove Irish abbots; I couldn't find an Abbots from Northern Ireland category) Mason (talk) 00:44, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- Rename, reparent and purge per nom. It is very unusual to group biographies by region instead of by nationality and there does not seem to be any particular reason for it. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:45, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
Delete. These will probably mostly be medieval figures, particularly after the Irish ones are removed, and describing them as "British" will be anachronistic. The subcategories for English, Scottish and Welsh abbots are sufficient. Ham II (talk) 11:37, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- That is a very good point. I am supporting deletion too. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:03, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Smasongarrison: thoughts on deletion? HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 19:46, 26 August 2024 (UTC)
- My inclination is to rename because British abbots are still a thing. There are abbots in the modern age. Mason (talk) 20:23, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

- @Smasongarrison: can you give a few examples of articles about modern British abbots? Marcocapelle (talk) 04:26, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Sure. Here are the first three modern British abbots I came across: Cuthbert Johnson, Charles Arbuthnot (abbot), Bruno Fehrenbacher. (I can dig up more, but I'll probably get distracted and start building out the abbot by century tree)Mason (talk) 05:17, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you. Then a deletion is premature indeed and rename and purge as nominated is the better solution. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:18, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- OK, I'll withdraw my objection. The case is analagous (or will be, after moving) to that of Category:British Christian monks, which is another container category for a lot of medieval figures and some modern. (For the early middle ages "Britons" can still be used in the ancient sense, but not yet in the modern sense. Only changing "British Foo" to "Foo from Great Britain" would really solve the anachronism problem.) Ham II (talk) 06:44, 31 August 2024 (UTC)

- Nominator's rationale: I moved a bunch of articles that were about works featuring fictional radio stations rather than fictional radio stations themselves up to the parent category. That leaves only the list, one article, and a bunch of redirects, which isn't really enough to warrant a category. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:09, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
