Golden Child
by
The sheets that they laid over the couch and armchair since the break-in are all smoothed out and organized, but the place still looks terrible.
One of the most immediately intriguing things about Golden Child is how Claire Adam is able to subtly make clear how high the stakes are for the Deyalsingh family. She opens by evocatively describing the Trinidadian setting, and it seems as though Clyde is coming home to his family after an average day at work. However, the casual mention of a recent break-in gives us a hint that this is a household in turmoil, and there is reason for all the present members of the family—Clyde, Joy, and Peter—to be concerned when Paul does not come home. Though this is ultimately a novel about character and place, there is an undercurrent of suspense that kept me turning the pages, desperate to discover the fate of this family.
