Second book by the author of 'Let the Right One In', which I loved. His first book felt like a weirdly-realistic version of how vampires might exist in modern society (or at least 1980s Sweden.) So I expected something along those lines with his second book, 'Handling the Undead', only about zombies, mid-2000s. That's basically what happened, but in a more or less mellow way of unfolding; no fast-paced hordes chasing people, rasping "brains!" So, the story did not hook me for much of the book. It follows three "situations," and often gets pretty intriguing. Some of what they were going through made me keep going. And sometimes, I wasn't drawn to the story, and simply wasn't too curious for some stretches. Partially, because of things going on outside the book while I was reading it, I was distracted and took my time. I might've enjoyed it more if I had been able to be more diligent about reading. Ultimately, I liked it.

A vivid experience, that’s often tense, and sprinkled with frequent amazement. The book doesn’t state it, but since Lynne Cox was born in 1957, and was 17 years old at the time of the encounter, this is a mid-70s (1974ish)-set book. And so, there are many go-to solutions we might think of now for the problems and issues that come up throughout this story, but for most they are yet to be invented, or improved-upon. So in some respects, the ocean of this story is still scary, still a frontier. Without actually swimming in any part of the ocean away from the sand your feet can touch, it’s near-impossible to imagine this experience. And she does it for hours, and—“spoiler”—with a baby Gray whale nearby. This book was fun, and satisfyingly interesting to me, in part because I’ve seen this area it takes place; I’m from Southern California, felt that ocean, tasted its brine, and witnessed the diversity of its population and vastness of its horizon. So, this encounter was truly rare.
