“A soft noise, almost a sob. Ash rose, hesitated, as if fighting the compulsion to obey. "I will always be your knight, Meghan Chase," he whispered in a strained voice, as if every moment he remained was painful to him. "And I swear, if there is a way for us to be together, I will find it. No matter how long it takes. If I have to chase your soul to the ends of eternity, I won't stop until I find you, I promise."

And then he was gone.”
Julie Kagawa, The Iron Queen

“Ash brought my hand to his lips, his eyes never leaving mine. "I love you, Meghan Chase," he murmured against my skin. "For the rest of my life, however long we have left. I'll consider it an honor to die beside you.”

“He hesitated, but then stepped beneath the tree and knelt, depositing me gently on the ground between two giant roots. And he stayed there, kneeling beside me, holding my hand in his. Something splashed the back of my hand, cold as spring water, crystalling to my skin. A faery's tears.”

“He nodded. "I think you're good for him, Meghan," he said, smiling in a small, sad way that was completely different from the Puck I knew. "I see the way he looks at you, something I haven't seen in him since the day we lost Ariella. And...I know you love him in a way that you can't love me." He looked away, just for a moment, and took a deep breath. "Jealousy isn't something that we deal with well," he admitted. "But some of us have been around long enough to know when to let go, and what is most important. The happiness of my two best friends should be more important than some ancient feud.”

“Don't you dare throw your life away for an unknown superstition. If you die --" My voice broke, and I swallowed thickly. "I love you," I whispered, fisting my hands against his stomach. "You can't leave. You swore you wouldn't."

Ash's hands came to rest over mine, twining our fingers together. "Even if the world stands against you," he murmured, bowing his head. "I promise.”

“He drew in a shaky breath. "How can you ask me to let you die?" he choked, still keeping the blade at the prince's throat. A thread of blood formed under the knife, and ran down to Ash's collar. "I'd do anything for you, Meghan. Just...not that. Not that."

Gently, I reached up and closed my fingers around the knife hilt, easing it down and away from Ash's neck. Puck resisted for a moment, then stepped back with a sob. The dagger fell from his grip and clanged to the floor.”

“Meghan!" The voice called to me again, and I recognized it now. It was his voice, the voice of my knight, frantic and tormented, pulling me back from the void. "Meghan, no!" it pleaded, echoing in the blackness. "Don't do this. Come on, wake up. Please." The last word was a desperate, whispered sob, and I opened my eyes.”

“How can I rule anyone - when you so completely rule me?”

“A king without a Queen." Kian sighed, breathing mist into the air. He held me tighter, kissing me with a heat that seemed to thaw the very snow on which we stood. "You don't know me as well as you think you do," he said. "What I'm holding back. What I'm capable of. You haven't felt it - how much I love you...”
Kailin Gow, Silver Frost

“I can't wait." Kian pressed my hands to his lips. "I love you with all my heart, all my being, all of myself. Whatever my mother says, whatever the law says, you are still my intended. I can feel it. Feel it the way I feel the power of Winter Magic in my blood. It is a truth more ancient than any laws, any magic. We can still communicate telepathically, with our minds, which is one magic of love. When you have love for someone, and it is returned, lovers can communicate through the mind - as long as we have that connection, we will never be truly parted. Promise me that, Breena.”

“In his eyes I could see the same love, the same longing. I wanted to kiss him; I wanted him to kiss me, and I could feel his longing so clearly I could not distinguish between my wanting and his. And in his arms I felt safe, warm, alive.”

“Mistletoe," said Kian, leading me to a spot in the center of the garden. He kissed me softly. "I hear it means something in your world.”

“I could resist no longer. The love, the desire tearing apart my sould was more than I could bear. I allowed him to take my arm, allowed myself to melt into him, to close my eyes and inhale once more his scent of lavender and winter skies as we walked together towards the orchards.”

“Are you sure?" His voice was barely a whisper, a ghost in the dark.

I nodded, tracing my fingers down his cheek, marveling as he closed his eyes. "We could die tomorrow," I whispered back. "I want to be with you tonight. I don't want to have any regrets, when it comes to us. So, yes, I'm sure. I love you, Ash.”

“I'm not her," I said, slipping my arm through his. "You're not going to lose me, I promise.”

“He closed his eyes, and a single tear crawled down his cheek. I knew I was asking him to do the impossible, and it was tearing me apart that Ash was suffering. But at least I would make it right in the end. I'd promise him that much.”

“Hmm, I officially amend my previous statement. Clearly one of them is that stupid.”

“You won't have the urge to run to me and do unspeakable acts, but you will always feel my presence within the city, and we'll know one another's strong emotions."
"Who says I want to do any unspeakable acts?" She frowned.
"Certain desires must be consuming your thoughts, because that's exactly what I'm battling myself." I smiled, feeling particularly wicked at the scandalized look on her face.
"How does one acknowledge the bond then?" She looked away.
"A kiss should do it," I said.
"Didn't you already kiss my hand?"
Reaching out, I cupped her chin gently, rubbing my thumb over her soft bottom lip. "Here.”

“My phone buzzed. I looked down--- a text from Devin.

Enjoying yourself?

I grinned.

Yup, lots of hot guys here

A sharp sensation, the magnetic warmth we shared, heated with annoyance.

I'll show you why I'm better than them when we get home

Jealousy is unbecoming. You're the only one I'm interested in. The snowplows are going to be busy tomorrow.

“What I know is there is no guarantee of tomorrow. There is no promise there will be another day or week for us. When you want something, you go for it.”

“A couple moved off the dance floor, leaving just enough of a window for us to see clearly, Candace and Thea. My heart skipped at the sight of her.
"Magnificent," I whispered. Heather looked at me from the corner of her eye.
"What does that mean?" she asked.
"She radiates it." I waved at the dance floor. "One way or another, she was meant to be a part of our world.”

“And then there was him. Devin hummed an icy chill. Both gentle falling snow and roaring storms at the same time. He was the evergreens that thrived in the cold. The crisp stillness in the air, and the dark night full of cold white stars.
There was most definitely a pull, and it was overwhelming. More than the thread tugging incessantly in my chest, my whole body wanted to sink toward that comforting chill like it was a giant pile of blankets and I hadn't slept in days. Something told me the weariness in my bones would find comfort there.
I could feel it. Taste it. I wanted to run to it. My arms prickled with winter sensations. I wanted to dance in the moonlight, leaving swirls of footprints in the snow. The cold didn't bite like it had only a few minutes ago. My new skin was comfortably warm, and something told me that nothing would chill me to the bone ever again. Even if I hadn't felt Winter's pull, I still felt a pull toward Devin. In his bright eyes I saw only longing; the urge to run to his arms was strong.”

“There was no denying my attraction to Thea before, but now it was so much more than a serendipitous encounter. It was a natural attraction ready to pull us together the moment she had enough of her own magic to give it life.
And she was stunning. Her general shape hadn't changed much. Her features had sharpened, and her ears came to a newly formed point. But her other new features were undeniably fae. Beautiful and elegant and uniquely hers. If I was attracted to her before, the bond was now making her entirely distracting to my senses.”

“My heart pounded as I kissed Devin, thrilling the thread between us. It was a slow, sweet kiss that filled me with warmth. Pulling him by the tie, that was absolutely a Candace move. But it was worth channeling her if it gave me the backbone to reach out and make the move I wanted.
His hands tightened on the steering wheel, the scent of him in my face and making my head swim. A snap startled me--- a small gasp escaped my mouth against his and Devin took full advantage of it. Moving his tongue against my parted lips, I welcomed him in as we deepened the kiss. The string at my heart pulled tighter and tighter as if screaming for more.
When the pull between us felt impossibly needy, asking for more than I could physically give it, everything suddenly went slack. It was like a light switch had turned off. The pull was gone; in its place was a gentle warmth coming from Devin. I felt his heart, his adrenaline.
Letting the tie slide through my fingers, I leaned back so I could see him. My lips left his, and his hungry expression was slowly replaced by his mask of calm. That made one of us. My breath was burning sharp and fast as I panted down air; my chest rushed to keep up.
"That's better," I breathed. "I wasn't going to be able to sleep with that thread dangling like that."
Devin was surprisingly speechless, and my eyes flicked to the top half of his steering wheel, which had broken off in his hands. That explained the snap I'd heard.”

“Thea," I said, my voice lower and firmer than I had intended. "I want you here, and even better, I'm glad you slept in my bed."
Another flush of emotion from the direction of Thea's warmth. Just a hint of lust. Her lips parted in surprise, and my eyes followed the motion with a spreading grin.
"Did you sleep well, bond mate?" I asked, low and with clear intent to tease.
Thea caught her breath and stood up straighter, pulling my shirt tighter around her shoulders. She looked me up and down, a mix of curiosity and scandal on her face. "Now who is thinking unspeakable things?"
Her reaction was unexpected and I chuckled as I took her fingers in my hand. "You're entangled with a fae now, darling. Unspeakable things are what I excel at.”

“Then when I finally manage to fall asleep with my untouched mate lying next to me," he said, giving me a heated gaze, "She rolls right through her wall and onto me."
"This has to be the bond--- I don't roll around in my sleep." I covered my face with a pillow. "And I certainly don't throw myself on men I've known only for a matter of weeks." I'd never thrown myself at men at all, to be honest, but Devin is not high school puppy love material, and he's no college fling that was never meant to be. If anything, he was straight out of the calendar Candace kept on her fridge.
"Not that I was bothered by it. In fact, I wouldn't mind a repeat."
I threw my pillow at him and covered my face as he laughed. "Please forget that happened."
"Absolutely not." He pulled my hands from my face. "It was charming, don't be upset."
He leaned forward and the rest of the blankets fell away. A burst of lust ran through me as my eyes wandered south, and I couldn't tell if it was from me or Devin or if it even mattered because we were both acutely aware of it. I groaned and covered my face with my hands.
"I'm all yours to look at, you know." Devin gently pried my hands from my face, taking one of them to press against his chest.”

“He grazed a fang across my collarbone and I shivered. The building pressure had me on the edge and teetering. It was absolutely ridiculous that I was so close to orgasm with only a few strokes of his fingers, but Devin managed to pull it out of me as I grabbed the sheets at my side and pressed the side of my face into the bed. The heat slammed into me in waves. It was all I could do to hold on for the ride, letting out a senseless sound of pleasure.
He pulled his hand away slowly, kissing my forehead. "More?"
"No," I breathed. "You, now, please." I pulled him down and kissed him deeply. He shifted how he was leaning over me, scooting up the bed as he did it. As he pressed himself firmly against my entrance, I was ready to beg for it if I had to. I wanted Devin. Now.
He slid himself just inside. A sharp breath, my eyes widened. The nostalgia pinch of being stretched open surprised me.
"I'm all right," I breathed. "It's just been a while."
He pressed in a little farther. I dug my nails lightly into his back, and he growled in approval. He grazed my neck with his fangs and a soft noise escaped my lips; he licked and kissed my skin on his way back up to my mouth. An ice-cold breeze whipped past us. I held on tighter as Devin thrust deep inside. I screamed as the waves of pleasure hit again, somehow even harder than before. I removed my nails from his back when I realized how deeply I had dug them into his skin, but he didn't seem to notice. Everything felt like jelly. Content, unwound jelly.
I rolled on my side, catching my breath as Devin curled me into his body, one hand lazily stroking my stomach. "How do you feel?"
"That was intense," I breathed. "Is it always like that with fae?"
"Too much?" He nuzzled into my hair.”

“Don't the humans want a white New Year's? We can make that happen." I slid my hand off her leg and around her lower back, leaning in to kiss her neck.
"It's a white Christmas." She laughed, looking out the window, the gentle rush of traffic in the background just beyond our private street the only indication that the city outside of our little world had moved on with its day. "And I think we've already done that. Well... a white Boxing Day, at least."
"Hm." I leaned in and kissed her neck. "I think we can do better."
"Devin..."
"Yes, darling?" I let a hand wander, feeling the goose bumps down her arm.
We can't spend all day in... bed."
"I have a few ideas that won't require a bed."
"You're incorrigible," she said, turning red as she tried to hide her smile. "Fine. Let's have a snow day.”
Sabrina Blackburry, Dirty Lying Faeries

“He leaned down and kissed me, warm and soft. "I do have a trick to get you to relax though."
And I knew exactly what his idea of "relaxing" was. "We're at work!"
"We're alone at work," he teased, lifting me off my feet and walking away with me in his arms.
"You're insatiable!" I laughed as he bound up the stairs.
"Only when it comes to you, love."
In his office, he kicked the door shut behind him before setting me on the small couch by the bookshelves. He caged me in his arms and leaned down to kiss my neck.
"What do you think you're doing?" My lips protested, but my head moved to the side, giving him more room to kiss me.
"Are we still trying for a faeling?" he asked. "These things can take quite a bit of time, you know."
"It could take decades!"
"A sacrifice I'm willing to make," he teased.
Wrapping my fingers around his tie, I gently tugged his face down to mine so I could kiss him, reminiscent of our first kiss that had cemented the bond between us half a year ago.
"Whatever happens, happens. I'm not as impatient as you, Lord of Winter."
"Only for you," Devin answered. "Only ever for you, love."
He kissed me again, deeper and hungrier than before, and I wrapped my arms around his neck and melted into him.”
