London Literature Festival at Southbank Centre
In a London exclusive, the global bestselling author of sci-fi fantasy series Artemis Fowl introduces a blockbusting new spin-off series, The Fowl Twins.
Hear from Eoin Colfer as he explores the very genesis of magic, the essence of criminality and the inherent hilarity of head lice.
Marvel as he ponders age-old questions, such as: Are criminal masterminds born or made? Is it sometimes necessary to be bad to be good? How many fart jokes is too many fart jokes?
The self-titled first book in the Fowl Twins series sees Artemis’ twin brothers at the helm of a dangerously fast-paced adventure.
With their parents away and their brother, criminal virtuoso Artemis Fowl, away on a five-year mission to Mars, the younger Fowl children, 11-year-old twins Myles and Beckett, have been left alone at the Fowl family home for a single day – and a lot can happen on one day in the Fowl world.
The Fowl Twins features Colfer’s trademark humour, prescient technological inventions and modern retelling of fairy folklore.
The book can be enjoyed as a standalone by readers new to the Fowl universe and will be a welcome return to a familiar world for existing Fowl fans.
Colfer is the New York Times bestselling author of eight books in the Artemis Fowl series, with sales in excess of 25 million copies around the world, as well as Iron Man: The Gauntlet, the WARP trilogy, Airman, Half Moon Investigations, The Supernaturalist, Eoin Colfer’s Legend of… books, The Wish List, Benny and Omar, and Benny and Babe.
Artemis Fowl the movie is set for release by Walt Disney Studios in spring 2020, directed by Kenneth Branagh and featuring Dame Judi Dench.

Children’s Books Ireland Annual Conference
The F Word: Failure is this year’s theme, with speakers invited to reflect on times in their careers where things have fallen apart, deadlines went out the window and defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory. Rather than revel in what didn’t work, CBI is asking how failure can be learned from and used to create something better. The weekend will be opened by Eoin Colfer, Ireland’s third Laureate na nÓg, who will give his first public address as part of the conference.
This year’s line-up includes famous names and new talents, including illustrators such as David Roberts, whose Dirty Bertie books will be familiar to many, and David Mackintosh, whose illustration of a boy mowing loop-the-loops into a lawn is used on our conference poster to reflect our theme of failure, and show that making mistakes often leads to moments of beautiful creativity.
The annual CBI conference is a weekend-long celebration of the very best in books for young people from home and abroad.
Featuring some of the most exciting names in writing, illustration, publishing and criticism, this relaxed and friendly event is an opportunity for teachers, booksellers, librarians, academics, artists and other professionals – or anyone else with a passion for children’s literature – to meet old favourites and discover new voices.
