[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Old Norse skeifr, from Proto-Germanic *skaibaz (“crooked”), of disputed ultimate origin. Perhaps from the same source as Proto-Germanic *skeuhaz (“frightened, shy”).[1] Another possibility is Proto-Indo-European *skeh₂iwos, the source of Latin scaevus (“on the left side”).[2]
Cognates include Faroese skeivur, Icelandic skeifur, Swedish skev (< Old Swedish skēver), Danish skæv (> Norwegian Bokmål skjev), Middle Low German schêf, German schief, Dutch scheef, Old English *sc(e)āf (in scāffōt). See also English skew.
