Etymology

Probably from Gothic *𐍃𐍀𐌹𐍄𐌿𐍃 (*spitus),[1] from Proto-Germanic *spitō (rod); alternatively from a Gothic or Suevic [Term?] form derived from Proto-Germanic *speutą (spear).[2] Prefixed with a descendant of Proto-Germanic *ga-, which formed collective names.
