[edit]Originally restricted to Low and Central German; generalized by Luther. Borrowed from Middle Low German vrien and Middle High German vrīen, frīen, vrijen, vrigen, from Old High German *frīon; compare Old Saxon friohon. Ultimately from Proto-Germanic *frijōną. Cognate to Dutch vrijen.
