BNP (B-type natriuretic protein) is a natriuretic hormone that in heart disease is produced by myocytes in the chambers of the heart, primarily in response to stretching of the walls due to increased pressure [1]. Measurement of BNP has therefore attracted great research interest since the early 1990s and has great clinical potential as an instrument for diagnostics, prognostics and treatment selection of patients with heart failure [2].
