Welcome to Wikipedia. I noticed that your username, "NUSTOMAN", may not comply with our username policy. Please note that you may not use a username that represents the name of a company, group, organization, product, service, or website. Examples of usernames that are not allowed include "XYZ Company", "MyWidgetsUSA.com", and "Foobar Museum of Art". [edit]
There have been two problems with this account: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business or other organisation or group or a web site, which is also against policy, as an account must be for just one person. Because of those problems, the account has been blocked indefinitely from editing. Additionally, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for your contributions to Wikipedia, you must disclose who is paying you to edit.

If you intend to make useful contributions other than promoting your business or organisation, you may request an unblock. To do so, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:CentralAuth to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy. Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In that reason, you must:

  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal this block. To do so, please read the guide to appealing blocks, then add the text {{unblock|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page, replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason for thinking that the block was an error, and publish the page. Request to unblock account

[edit]

hi @NJA: and @Deepfriedokra: thanks for follow up to my ticket. Sorry I did not realise I had to post the information on my talk page as well as in the unblock request template, which i completed and sent through - I should have read more closely - apologies.   I don't have a copy of the information in my ticket if you a re able to copy/post directly that would be most helpful (so as not to cause confusion going forward), if not I can fill out the information again - it may not be the exact wording but the reasons remain consistent. Please confirm whether you can copy/paste - or if I should resubmit from scratch on here?. Appreciate your patience. Thanks (NUSTOMAN (talk) 17:13, 18 February 2020 (UTC))[reply]

@NUSTOMAN: For future reference, in order for users to see notifications, {{Re|NJA}} to produce "@NJA:" (just writing @NJA doesn't work). —[AlanM1(talk)]— 02:33, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

information Administrator note Please use the unblock procedure noted in the block template above. You may copy/paste as long as the information summarizes your understanding of the rationale for the block. Also set out generally contributions you intend to make. You will need to convince admins, if unblocked under a new name that complies with username policy, that you will not edit in a manner that would be considered advertising and promotional or edit in a way that is a conflict. You must also explain any direct or indirect remuneration received further to WP:PAID, N.J.A. | talk 11:36, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @NJA: thanks does this mean that the information I already supplied, complying with all sections of the unblock request template has been discarded and the ticket void as I did not post on my talk page? and that I need to resubmit all information again - as both a ticket and on my talk page. ie start again with my appeal.

Request reason:

Appeal to unblock account - content is not promotional NUSTOMAN (talk) 15:32, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Decline reason:

If you think even in retrospect that something like "emphasises the creative applications of knowledge from a core curriculum designed to forge new and meaningful connections" is not promotional, then we cannot unblock you - you clearly are unable to recognize promotional content and thus will not be able to avoid adding it again if unblocked. Huon (talk) 20:27, 21 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

What is your email address? (Redacted) is the email associated with this account, I had tried to use a personal Hotmail account previously but had trouble receiving information without it being treated as spam. But I can supply a personal email address if this considered more suitable should I be reinstated.

Do you have an account on Wikipedia? Yes

Why do you believe you should be unblocked? The content is not promotional - The information I have added to the site is encyclopedic, with full referencing, and is not presented as advertising or promotional material but information to develop the resources on universities within the Middle East.

I am not employed by the institution - I had been open in my editing stating that I was doing this work with the knowledge of the institution – though I am not an employee and receive no benefit from this work either financially or in kind. This was done purely on an informal basis - partly as an exercise to see if I could learn to build a site, and because of discussions with others on the lack of (correct and poorly referenced) information on Middle Eastern universities.

When creating my account I used a username and associated email address purely for simplicity - I had not read your guidance on usernames at this entry point - ignorance is not meant to be an excuse – I have since asked for a change of username, to comply with the guidelines (I have not heard anything further about whether this will be allowed).

It is was my intention to become an active and engaged editor on the Wikipedia site. - As I am building experience, I have been reaching out to other editors to seek assistance, ask questions and look to enrich the site. I have engaged in the short time I have been editing with conversation on the Tearoom and have looked to become involved with the wider range of WikiProjects for the Middle East. This demonstrates that I am looking to engage with the Wikipedia site and not just add specific content to one page.

If you are unblocked, what articles do you intend to edit? My interest in higher education, academia and research will be a focus of future editing work where I have specific expertise.

As a new editor to Wikipedia I will initially look to enrich the content around the HE institutions in the Middle East - for example, I have just been collecting reference material to add to the Higher College of Technology in Abu Dhabi as it is poorly referenced - and I would look to engage with this content next. I have looked to become involved with ta wider range of WikiProjects for the Middle East already.

I am also seeking to add content to other areas where pages lack in fully referenced content on academics and particularly women scholars. I also want to engage with content about my geographic location (Cardiff and South Wales).

I have not yet built my user page, and will also do this, so that I can better refence those projects I am most interested in contributing to and others who contact me will better understand how I might be useful to them.

Why do you think there is a block currently affecting you? If you believe it's in error, tell us how. I understand why the block was put in place – and that my username, conflicted with your user guidelines. I have requested a username change to comply with your guidelines.

I am not informally or formally employed by NUST and receive no payment or other remuneration from them in any capacity, the editing I have done is purely on an informal basis, but with the knowledge of the VC of the University.

The content I have added to date was purely to enrich a new site, that I had not set up the template for, but was lacking any content. I have been careful to follow content guidelines and to make this encyclopedic and factual in nature, and not advertising or promotional in its detail, and not infringe copyright. I have made sure that I am fully referencing any content I load and that any changes I request (such as to categories) are factually correct.

Is there anything else you would like us to consider when reviewing your block? I am happy to fully disclose who I am and supply Linked In information to clarify my employment, experience and qualifications should you want to check.

  • Also note that the {{Re}} is really fussy – it must be part of a new message, and signed, in order to work. Pinging @NJA in case the syntax problem with this section header kept the template from being seen. Sorry for your difficulties. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 00:49, 20 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@AlanM1:, @NJA:, @Huon: Absolutely understand the need to keep the resource encyclopedic. But really? in context 'The University emphasises the creative applications of knowledge from a core curriculum designed to forge new and meaningful connections across health sciences, engineering, and technology' is hardly marketing propaganda. Though perhaps it would be more meaningful to have open and fruitful discussions to encourage building a useful, expert and wide ranging community for editing on Wikipedia, I would of course been happy to look at all areas of conflict. It is a shame to be excluded as I had just started editing, and had much to learn about developing the site, which I was looking forward to. However I won't appeal, as I would have liked to join a community where development rather than retribution was the norm, I am deeply disappointed to not be able to continue. (NUSTOMAN (talk) 13:11, 24 February 2020 (UTC))[reply]

@NUSTOMAN: Think of it this way: I'm some random prospective student who has just taken a tour of the university, studied its offerings, and met with faculty. Is that a sentence I would use when telling someone about it? "emphasises the creative applications of knowledge" and "forge new and meaningful connections" are flowery, carefully worded, market-speak (if you will), designed to stretch some simple words out into something flowing (and kind of cryptic, IMO). It needs to be "dumbed-down" to the basic meaning of the sentence and then, perhaps, be embellished a little to sound like adult-level writing. I'm not sure what the sentence is even trying to say, other than "offers classes in sciences, engineering, and technology". I'd say the correct approach is much like technical writing.
I was also confused by the email address you posted above, which seems to contradict the statement that you are not affiliated with the school. It appears to be the VC's email. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 15:49, 24 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@AlamM1: and I appreciate the feedback, I don't disagree there are some other sentences that could do with rewriting to loose some of this type of text, but I had just started to add text, and would have looked to edit further, as well as add additional text (particularly the history section) - and if someone had thought to message me, or even edit it themselves, it could have and would have been removed or altered to be more fitting to the tone required for the article. Do you think in context of the page and the referenced additions I made it was meant to be an advertisement or propaganda?

In terms of the email - it is 'one' account that links in to the VC office for which I have access because I do on occasion act as a Senior Advisor to the VC, this is not a remunerated role. Writing on Wikipedia is not part of any role I have with that office, though it was done with their knowledge. As noted above in my appeal above, it came as a result of a private discussion. It is one of several email address I have. As per my appeal I would happily provide details of who I am to allay any concerns. It is really not my intention to take up any more of your time, I know there is an appeals process that I could go through and I am not looking to circumvent due process. (NUSTOMAN (talk) 16:40, 24 February 2020 (UTC)) 16:35, 24 February 2020 (UTC))[reply]

If you genuinely do not see your past writing as promotional, then I have nothing to add to my comment above and remain opposed to an unblock. What you wrote is marketing propaganda, and it's not welcome on Wikipedia.Huon (talk) 18:11, 24 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Huon: Appreciate your perspective and that you want to ensure Wikipedia is an honest and reflective resource. I note that you have removed all edits from the 1st Jan onwards on the NUST (Oman) page from myself and others, I will not seek to add further text to this page or other Wikipedia pages. I assume that with your expertise on Middle Eastern universities (since you chose to delete the text rather than review or edit) that you would want to build a rich and appropriate resource yourself since is so sadly lacking on the site or perhaps others could review the content to see what is useful as per https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Dispute_resolution#Follow_the_normal_protocol rather than remove it all. I genuinely look forward to builds to bring this to life. Again I had hoped that we could have a useful discussion but this talk page is not the place for following though on any disputes.(NUSTOMAN (talk) 00:14, 25 February 2020 (UTC))[reply]
