Request: Please remove your translit scipt from Dzongkha Wikipedia.

[edit]

Eukesh

As I have asked on your main user page on Newar Wikipedia, kindly Please remove your Translit script from the Dzongkha Wikipedia. I'm sorry to say that it interferes with the standard Dzongkha keyboard, makes editing Dzongkha articles very difficult and so discourages participation on Dzongkha Wikipedia. In other words it is harmful to Dzongkha Wikipedia. This may be one of the reasons why no one is participating there.

I know your intention was to be helpful - but in this particular case it isn't. As I think I informed you some time ago, Dzongkha and Tibetan transliteration is *very* different than that used for Indic languages. For instance following normal translitteration the word Dzongkha (རྫོང་ཁ) is translitterated as rdzong kha but, when we type this, your translit script produces "རཛོངཁཨ" instead of "རྫོང་ཁ་". Dzongkha also has many unpronounced prefixes and suffixes and also requires a tshek character (u+0F0B) between each syllable which your system doesn't handle. Also rhe encoding model for Tibetan script in the Unicode Standard is also very different to that used for other Indic scripts in the Unicode Standard as there a whole set of combining consonants (U+0FB0-U+0FB9) in addition to the standard consonant characters (U+0F40-U+0F69) - and so virama is not used in creating conjuncts very common in Dzongkha & Tibetan words. I know your Tranlit script has a check box to turn it off ~ but it is very frustrating to have to do this with each and every edit. It also effects the Search /Go To box on left colum of each page and there is no obvious way to turn it off there. Without a functioning Search box a Wiki is fatally crippled. So please remove this script ASAP because, as far as Dzongkha and Tibetan are concerned, it is not only entirely useless but interferes with editing and searching the Wiki.

I do know what I'm talking about here - I was responsible for many of the proposals used for encoding Tibetan script in the Unicode standard, have developed several open type Tibetan fonts, and I work as an IT specialist for the Dzongkha Development Comission in Bhutan,
Thanks
Chris Fynn (talk) 07:16, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. I notice you have installed the same input script for Tibetan. It is just as harmful there as it is for Dzongkha. Perhaps this is one reason why native speakers are not contributing to the Dzongkha and Tibetan Wikipedias. Please see: [Wikipedia Help Desk - How to remove an unwanted script?] - and kindly remove the script. Chris Fynn (talk) 13:42, 27 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

[edit]
Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

Current proposals and discussions
  • A discussion is underway here to reach a consensus regarding the use of Indian number names (lakh, crore etc.) in Wikipedia articles. Please participate and add your comments.
  • A discussion is in progress here in order to determine whether non-Western (including Indian) forms of classical music should be referred to by the nomenclature of art music instead of classical music. Please participate and add your comments.
  • Watchlist the Articles for Deletions page for India related discussions. Opinions from more Indian Wikipedians are required in many of the discussions.

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010

[edit]
English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.

Proposed Tibetan naming conventions

[edit]

A while back, I posted a new proposal for Tibetan naming conventions, i.e. conventions that can be used to determine the most appropriate titles for articles related to the Tibetan region. This came out of discussions about article titles on Talk:Qamdo and Talk:Lhoka (Shannan) Prefecture. I hope that discussions on the proposal's talk page will lead to consensus in favour of making these conventions official, but so far only a few editors have left comments. If you would be interested in taking a look at the proposed naming conventions and giving your opinion, I would definitely appreciate it. Please note that the inclusion criteria for this list is the existence of a Wikipedia article. Please do not add unlinked or redlinked entries. It is absolutely impossible to have a list of every Buddhist temple in the world. The list would be too long and unverifiable. It would also attract many non-notable listings. Discussion on the talk page resolved that only temples with Wikipedia articles were to be listed. If you'd like to make a sub-article, suchs as Buddhist temples in Nepal or List of Buddhist temples in Nepal, that would be the place to list and discuss temples which don't have Wikipedia articles. Yworo (talk) 22:01, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

All list articles are supposed to have inclusion criteria. They are described in the lead of the article. If you'd take the time to watch this article, you'd see that there are frequent additions of non-notable little temples. Lists can have multiple functions on Wikipedia. The function of this one is to help the user to find existing articles. There are literally millions of Buddhist temples in the world and we can't list them all, thus we must have an inclusion criteria and follow it. If you want to create stub articles of clearly notable temples before adding them to the list, please do so. Otherwise, please don't encourage non-notable additions by adding unlinked or redlinked entries.
I didn't create the article, and it may duplicate the function of a category, but clearly the argument that we can't list every little Buddhist temple in the world is legit, and as the rule can be worked around by creating stubs and/or sub-articles such as List of Buddhist temples in Nepal, which can be complete lists if desired, I agree with the inclusion criteria in the lead of the article and the reasons proposed for implementing. Yworo (talk) 20:06, 1 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No, you can only change the criteria with consensus. That means getting other editors who maintain the page to agree with you. I disagree, so you can't currently change it as there is no consensus to do so. Yworo (talk) 20:23, 1 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, most of the evidence are already destroyed by the regime, but still the people who speak the real story are alive. I am working with those individual who are almost 70s and 80s now, to collect the hidden part of our history.

Thanks for your great writeup! "Evidences are there, one day they can be seen. No longer they could hide and lie this world."

Kathmandu

[edit]

Hi. Are you going to help me get Kathmandu up to GA status? I'm going to begin working on it. It will need a history section back but condensed of course. I disagree with your main image, it should be one of the whole city though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:08, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would use History of Kathmandu and simply condense into a decent sized couple of paragraphs. If there's something you disagree with can you start a new section on the talk page of Kathmandu and we can discuss it. That way we'll avoid editing disputes or warring.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:38, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Images are fine but definitely we need to add a panorama image of the city looking across the Kathmandu valley. Sorry but that is usually a pretty standard image in collages. I'll make a request. By all means go ahead with the history also it would be easier to make a summary from what already exists!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:05, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They're not free images though. Don't worry the "concrete jungle" pic will do for now until we obtain a better panorama image it can be replaced later.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:39, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You asked on my talk page "is it possible to create a panorama from this pic?" It could be cropped so that it was formatted more like a panorama (wide and not very tall) but it would not be a true panorama as the width of the field would be unchanged. Sorry I missed your question until now, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Please do not remove important pictures from the article. You are adding lots of information based on your own POV. This is not allowed in wikipedia. Seaboy123 (talk) 20:38, 6 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your 1st and 2nd points you have put on my talk page. I have problems with your 3rd point. You are right about unnecessary pictures like the ones you mentioned. However, you deleted a panorama of kathmandu which pretty much shows how kathmandu is. I think you are trying to give only positive impression of kathmandu. But to put the right impression of any article is the right thing to do in wikipedia. You removed the picture saying it does not show a landmark. Let me tell you, kathmandu is full of concrete bricks that you surely cant see anything. As such, i ask you to restore that picture or put one nicer immediate if you have one.
You also deleted the hdi of kathmandu. Kathmandu is the top most in terms of human development index in Nepal. Please restore it.
For the POV issue, it is getting a bit weird that you are seemed to be pushing a lot of the ethnic group 'Newar' related issues in the article. While I am aware that they resided in Kathmandu in the beginning, Kathmandu has moved since then and you need to put a more neutral article for it. If i do not see the tone of the article changed, I will have to edit your edits unfortunately!
I agree with most of your edits and will support them, however not all of them :). Please edit the article, but do not do it in bulk, it will just be a mess! If you are dedicated, try editing each part separately!

WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

[edit]

Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require assessment, that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a Tag & Assess 2012 drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

If you are new to assessment, you can learn the minimum about how to evaluate from Part One of the Assessment Guide. Part Two of the Guide will help you learn to employ the full functionality of the talk page template, should you choose to do so.

You can sign up on the Tag & Assess page. There are a number of awards to be given in recognition of your efforts. Come & join us to take part in this exciting new venture. You'll learn more about India in this way.

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Kathmandu, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Momo (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

The article Ketaa Pujaa has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unsourced, no notability asserted

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Medical Translation Newsletter

by CFCF, Doc James

sign up for monthly delivery

This is the first of a series of newsletters for Wikiproject Medicine's Translation Task Force. Our goal is to make all the medical knowledge on Wikipedia available to the world, in the language of your choice.

note: you will not receive future editions of this newsletter unless you *sign up*; you received this version because you identify as a member of WikiProject Medicine

Spotlight - Simplified article translation

Wikiproject Medicine started translating simplified articles in February 2014. We now have 45 simplified articles ready for translation, of which the first on African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness has been translated into 46 out of ~100 languages. This list does not include the 33 additional articles that are available in both full and simple versions.

Our goal is to eventually translate 1,000 simplified articles. This includes:

We are looking for subject area leads to both create articles and recruit further editors. We need people with basic medical knowledge who are willing to help out. This includes to write, translate and especially integrate medical articles.

What's happening?

IEG grant
CFCF - "IEG beneficiary" and editor of this newsletter.

I've (CFCF) taken on the role of community organizer for this project, and will be working with this until December. The goals and timeline can be found here, and are focused on getting the project on a firm footing and to enable me to work near full-time over the summer, and part-time during the rest of the year. This means I will be available for questions and ideas, and you can best reach me by mail or on my talk page.

Wikimania 2014

For those going to London in a month's time (or those already nearby) there will be at least one event for all medical editors, on Thursday August 7th. See the event page, which also summarizes medicine-related presentations in the main conference. Please pass the word on to your local medical editors.

Integration progress

There has previously been some resistance against translation into certain languages with strong Wikipedia presence, such as Dutch, Polish, and Swedish.
What was found is that thre is hardly any negative opinion about the the project itself; and any such critique has focused on the ways that articles have being integrated. For an article to be usefully translated into a target-Wiki it needs to be properly Wiki-linked, carry proper citations and use the formatting of the chosen target language as well as being properly proof-read. Certain large Wikis such as the Polish and Dutch Wikis have strong traditions of medical content, with their own editorial system, own templates and different ideas about what constitutes a good medical article. For example, there are not MEDRS (Polish,German,Romanian,Persian) guidelines present on other Wikis, and some Wikis have a stronger background of country-specific content.

  • Swedish
Translation into Swedish has been difficult in part because of the amount of free, high quality sources out there already: patient info, for professionals. The same can be said for English, but has really given us all the more reason to try and create an unbiased and free encyclopedia of medical content. We want Wikipedia to act as an alternative to commercial sources, and preferably a really good one at that.
Through extensive collaborative work and by respecting links and Sweden specific content the last unintegrated Swedish translation went live in May.
  • Dutch
Dutch translation carries with it special difficulties, in part due to the premises in which the Dutch Wikipedia is built upon. There is great respect for what previous editors have created, and deleting or replacing old content can be frowned upon. In spite of this there are success stories: Anafylaxie.
  • Polish
Translation and integration into Polish also comes with its own unique set of challenges. The Polish Wikipedia has long been independent and works very hard to create high quality contentfor Polish audience. Previous translation trouble has lead to use of unique templates with unique formatting, not least among citations. Add to this that the Polish Wikipedia does not allow template redirects and a large body of work is required for each article.
(This is somewhat alleviated by a commissioned Template bot - to be released). - List of articles for integration
  • Arabic
The Arabic Wikipedia community has been informed of the efforts to integrate content through both the general talk-page as well as through one of the major Arabic Wikipedia facebook-groups: مجتمع ويكيبيديا العربي, something that has been heralded with great enthusiasm.
Integration guides

Integration is the next step after any translation. Despite this it is by no means trivial, and it comes with its own hardships and challenges. Previously each new integrator has needed to dive into the fray with little help from previous integrations. Therefore we are creating guides for specific Wikis that make integration simple and straightforward, with guides for specific languages, and for integrating on small Wikis.

Instructions on how to integrate an article may be found here [3]

Feature – Ebola articles

[edit]
Electron micrograph of an Ebola virus virion

During August we have translated Disease and it is now live in more than 60 different languages! To help us focus on African languages Rubric has donated a large number of articles in languages we haven't previously reached–so a shout out them, and Ian Henderson from Rubric who's joined us here at Wikipedia. We're very happy for our continued collaboration with both Rubric and Translators without Borders!

Just some of our over 60 translations:
New roles and guides!

At Wikimania there were so many enthusiastic people jumping at the chance to help out the Medical Translation Project, but unfortunately not all of them knew how to get started. That is why we've been spending considerable time writing and improving guides! They are finally live, and you can find them at our home-page!

New sign up page!

We're proud to announce a new sign up page at WP:MTSIGNUP! The old page was getting cluttered and didn't allow you to speficy a role. The new page should be easier to sign up to, and easier to navigate so that we can reach you when you're needed!

Style guides for translations

Translations are of both full articles and shorter articles continues. The process where short articles are chosen for translation hasn't been fully transparent. In the coming months we hope to have a first guide, so that anyone who writes medical or health articles knows how to get their articles to a standard where they can be translated! That's why we're currently working on medical good lede criteria! The idea is to have a similar peer review process to good article nominations, but only for ledes.

Some more stats

New sign-up page for the Medical Translation Project

[edit]

Hey!

This is a friendly reminder that the sign-up page at the Medical Translation Project (previously Translation Task force) has been updated. This means everyone has to sign up again. Using the new page it will be easier for us to get into contact with you when there is work available. Please check out our progress pages now! There might be work there already for you.

We are also very proud to introduce new roles and guides which allows people to help who don't have medical knowledge too!

Here are ways you can help!
Community organization
We need involved Wikipedians to engage the community on the different Wikipedias, and to spread the word!
Assessing content
We need language knowledgeable Wikipedians (or not yet Wikipedians) who indicate on our progress tables which articles should and should not be translated!
Translating
We are always on the look-out for dedicated translators to work with our content, especially in smaller languages!
Integration
Translated articles need to be integrated into local Wikipedias. This process is done manually, and needs to take merge or replace older articles.
Template installation
For translations to be more useful templates and modules should be installed. We need people with the technical know-how who can help out!
Programming
Several of our processes are in need of simplification and many could occur automatically with bots.

Please use the sign up page, and thank you guys for all the work you've been doing. The translation project wouldn't be possible without you!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
