Rocketeers
[edit]Rocketeers is an Indian rocket science company based in Bangalore, India. The company provides educational, training and skill development solutions for the NewSpace and Space Technology Industry. Their programs and modules are based on Experiential Learning, STEM education, experiments, and projects. They have also developed, designed and manufactured India’s first ever line up of solid fuel powered model rocket kits.
History
[edit]Rocketeers was founded in 2014 by Akash Ekka and Divyanshu Poddar[1]. The initial idea came to be when both Akash and Divyanshu were studying at Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology[2]. The two were friends and soon formed a group of friends who shared same ideas about space sciences. Akash and Divyanshu wanted to make space sciences accessible to all and thought model rockets are a great segue[3].
After graduating from Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, both Akash and Divyanshu joined Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). While at ISRO, the idea of using model rocketry for space science education was developing. After spending about an year at ISRO, they set out to start the company full time.[3]
Rocketeers drew inspiration from the rocketry scene in USA and sought to create an environment for rocketry in India. This was especially difficult since rocketry wasn’t legalized. They also spent considerable time developing their own model rocket motors to help enthusiasts procure safe and easy to use model rocketry equipment.
In July 2018, they launched their own line of model rockets that are India's first solid fuel powered model rocket. They are available as DIY kits and have been developed in house. Rocketeers is also involved in STEM education and has developed teaching modules that could be used to set up a space science lab. They actively conduct rocketry workshops in various educational institutions[4]. As of May 2018, they have had 15,000 successful flights of their “typhoon” model rocket.
Awards and Recognition
[edit]- Awarded Top Technology Startup by Times of India in January 2017
- Nominated by NITI Aayog to India International Science Festival in September 2017
- Nominated by DIPP as Top 80 Indian Startups at GES -2017 showcased to Hon’ble PM Shri Narendra Modi and Ivanka Trump in October 2017
- Awarded Runner up at ET NOW and Lufthansa Runway to Success in January 2018
STEM Education
[edit]Rocketeers provides training and skill development programs for the NewSpace and Space Technology Industry[5]. These programs are hands on modules and are based on Experiential Learning. The programs contains scientifically designed experiments and projects and function in a “Plug and Play” manner so as to not disrupt the ongoing activities of the organization in question.
Educational institutions, primarily schools are their primary client base.
Model Rockets
[edit]Rocketeers have developed India’s first solid fuel powered model rocket kits[6]. These rocket kits are DIY type and are introduced to introduce rocket science as an hobby. It also serves to give a better understanding of basic math and science.
Based on lift off weight and peak altitude reached, at present they have 4 types of kits: Zippy, Moonshot, RB300 and Hurricane. As of May 2018, they have had 15,000 successful flights of their “typhoon” model rocket
Variant | Lift off Weight (without fuel) | Peak Altitude |
---|---|---|
Zippy | 38g | 200m |
RB300 | 35g | 275m |
Moonshot | 48g | 170m |
Hurricane | 70g | 140m |
Proposed Project
[edit]Rocketeers is actively pushing to regulate rocketry is India and is putting in efforts to have the bill tabled. They also plan on setting up dedicated launch sites in various cities of India where rockets could be flown in a safe environment.
