Best Practice Guidelines for UK Educators using the Courses Extension
[edit]UK-based educators (particularly in Higher Education may wish to consider consulting these resources first, before beginning design of assessments in Wikimedia projects
- Read the guidlines at Wikipedia:Ambassadors/Assignments. For those not redily conversant with best practces within Wikimedia, this article provides much good advice.
- Consider using the Wikipedia Courses Extension to create course pages. Currently, access to the courses extension requires the user to manually submit requests at the Education Noticeboard
- Be aware of the issues surrounding usernames and network throttling. Consider getting users to pre-register before a course begins. Creating usernames during a course may lead to lags and issues with editing uploading (confirmed addresses need an edit history before having access to extending editing features (such as uploading)
- Be aware of username formats. Strings with more than consecutive 10 upper-case characters are not permitted.
- Also be aware of spam throttling: pre-registering users may help with this. A successiion of attempted username creations or edits (iclding anonymous ones) are likely to trigger anti-spam measures within gthe wikimedia project being used, and may immpact on ability to work.
