Will do a review on this. I am currently on holiday (back on 4 July or so), but will look over before providing feedback.--ZKang123 (talk) 23:47, 30 June 2024 (UTC)
- @ZKang123 I will address the comments as they come. Thanks! Magentic Manifestations (talk) 06:53, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
Sourcing and spot checks
[edit]The article generally uses local news sources or government press releases, which are reliable in this context. I might suggest more consistent source formatting, like for Refs 99, 104 and 108 for "Chennai Metro" publisher parameter.
I will like to point out, however, that Earwig highlights uses of copyvios, such as:
- Original source: "The Planning Commission set up a Study Team on Metropolitan Transport in 1965 to assess the adequacy and limitation of existing transport facilities in the cities of Calcutta, Bombay, Madras and Delhi to determine the feasibility of different modes of transport and recommend phased programmes for development of transport facilities." and
- Article: "the Planning Commission set up a team to study to assess the adequacy and limitation of existing transport facilities, to determine the feasibility of different modes of transport and recommend programmes for development of transport facilities in major metropolitan cities including Madras".
Please check through the article for any other instances of close paraphrasing.

Copyedit
[edit]- The article isn't in bad shape, but the route maps for example could be hidden, because it's pushing and sandwiching the text.
- The article is comprehensive enough, but I think some rewrites would be required especially for the sentence flow and so on, as highlighted in the previous GA review. I will suggest some copyedits.
Lead
[edit]- I suggest following the style for New York City Subway as how the information is presented. So for example, the first paragraph could be rewritten as:
The Chennai Metro is a rapid transit system serving the city of Chennai, India. Operated by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) – a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu – the network consists of two lines and spans 54.1 km (33.6 mi). The system uses standard gauge and has 40 underground and elevated stations.
- Remarks: I don't think it's needed to mention colour-coded in the lead, since by default we know metro lines are colour-coded. Also, 5th longest doesn't seem to be noteworthy here, unless the metro continues to expand much more (50+km isnt very long tbh).
- with the construction commencing –
with construction commencing
- Testing began in 2014, and the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety approved the operations in January 2015. On 29 June 2015, commercial operations started between Alandur and Koyambedu stations on the green line with the first underground section between Thirumangalam to Nehru Park operational on 14 May 2017, which was later extended to Chennai Central on 25 May 2018.
- This chunk could be rewritten as:
After testing in 2014, the first segment of the metro between the Alandur and Koyambedu stations began operations on 29 June 2015.
- Why is it significant to highlight which first underground section opened? I would mention about the blue line, or the completion of the green line. The history mentioned how the metro was planned in two phases, so you can rewrite the history similarly to that. The construction of the first phase could be summarised in one paragraph.
- This chunk could be rewritten as:
- As of 2023, three more lines are under construction covering a length of 118.9 km (73.9 mi) in the second phase and Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System is planned to be taken over by Chennai Metro. –
Three more lines are under construction as part of the second phase, with the Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System planned to be incorporated into the metro.
expanded the section as suggested above, organizing into two paragraphs

Background
[edit]- Chennai Suburban Railway started operating in 1931 on a single electrified line from Chennai Beach to Tambaram with two more lines added connecting Chennai Central with Gummidipoondi in 1985 and Arakkonam later. –
A single electrified line from Chennai Beach to Tambaram began operations in 1931 as part of the Chennai Suburban Railway. Two other rail lines were subsequently built connecting Chennai Central to Gummidipoondi and Arakkonam in 1985 and [year] respectively.
- In 1965, the Planning Commission formed a group to study to research of the suitability of the existing transportation network, to ascertain the viability of various ways of transportation and advocate plans for the expansion of transportation amenities in major metropolitan cities including Madras. –
In 1965, the Planning Commission evaluated the capacity of the transportation network in major metropolitan cities including Madras, and developed plans for further expansion of transportation amenities.
- Is the MRTS a direct result of the aforementioned 1965 plans? Yes
Phase I
[edit]- Add "The" before "Delhi Metro Rail Corporation"
- tasked with preparing –
tasked to prepare
- Remove "detailed" and "Based on the report"
- I assume "corridors" refer to the lines. yes
- In December 2007, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), a SPV, was created by a joint venture between the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu to execute the project. –
In December 2007, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited was established as a joint venture/special-purpose entity between the Governments of India and Tamil Nadu to execute the project.
- The construction started on 10 June 2009. – Remove "the". Also would just say 10 June that year given it's clear from the preceding sentence what year it is.
- was awarded to Alstom at a cost of US$243 million. –
...to Alstom for US$243 million
- a report was submitted to the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety for approval – Approval for what? I might combine this sentence with the later one if it's about conducting safety tests. tweaked a little
- Did some copyediting for the stations' openings. ok
- Wonder if there are some details of construction challenges. Or delays. yes, added a line on the same
- Phase 1 extension: when is this extension announced? 2014, added with source
- A 9 km (5.6 mi) northern extension of the blue line running from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar consisting of nine stations. –
A 9 km (5.6 mi) northern extension of the blue line was announced in <year> by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The extension would run from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar and consist of nine stations.

Phase II
[edit]- Government of Tamil Nadu – add "the". Also similar whenever government organisations are mentioned (e.g. the CMRL)
- totaling 104 km (65 mi) in length – remove "in length". Also suggest "spanning 104 km"
- announced an extension in Phase II –
announced an extension of Phase II
- involving an extension from –
including a segment/section from...
- Madhavaram–Sholinganallur line – is this line part of the Chennai Railway or metro? Metro, it is mentioned in the previous line
- bringing the total length under the second phase to 118.9 km (73.9 mi) with 128 stations. – Separate this clause and rewrite:
The second phase would span 118.9 km (73.9 mi) with 128 stations.
- designed to be smaller than the existing stations operational in the first phase. –
...smaller than the stations of the first phase
- Also, any reason why? Environmental footprint? Less cost? added
- questioned the state government on the method adopted in construction of the tunnels –
... on the construction method of the tunnels and its impact...
- supply metro coaches –
supply rolling stock
- In May 2023, CMRL announced a revised plan for the second phase scrapping nine stations from the original plan. –
In May 2023, the CMRL announced that nine stations would be scrapped in the revised plan.
- As per the final plan, the second phase will consist of three lines of length 116.1 km (72.1 mi). –
Hence, the total length of the second phase was reduced to...
- Are there any reactions to the reduction? I think also something missing is the community's views of the project as well. Stations were reduced as there were changes in alignment of route and some stations were moved by 100-200m. Norm is to have a station for every ~1km.
- I'm also curious, for the first and second phases, are there like official groundbreaking ceremonies, minister visits or official inauguration? The Singapore MRT do hold celebrations when a new line segment opens. Being India, that happens at a larger scale and higher frequency. There are functions for everything from ground breaking, events like starting/ending of tunneling, opening of phases and sometimes even for new/modification of stations, bridges etc. The article uniformly mentions only important events as to when groundbreaking was held, line was opened etc. without going into the details of the people involved.
- I also note this Phase II there isn't also as much mentions of the construction contracts awarded. Agree that compared to Phase I (which still elaborates a lot on the projects even after trimming down a lot), there is hardly any mention of contracts here. As there are three lines over a longer distance and a shorter timeline, a lot of different contracts awarded to multiple companies (rather than Phase I where mostly generalized contracts were given to limited entities) and few were extended (rolling stock, signalling etc.) Will see if I can add something here.
More to come.--ZKang123 (talk) 07:57, 7 July 2024 (UTC)
- Tata Projects was awarded the contract to construct select stations in October – I guess this is the first stations contract awarded? Would mention this. The first contract was already awarded to RVNL for underground stations, mentioned previously. This is for select elevated stations.
- The CMRL invited new bids in March 2024 for the supply of 96 train-sets in the second phase – I guess also this is in addition to the previous 78 train sets Alstom is supplying? yes, mentioned so to be clear
Future plans
[edit]- In 2022, the state government proposed a revised extension plan spanning 93 km (58 mi) for the three under construction lines of the second phase. – Is this the extension of the second phase? Also I would move this into the Second Phase part
- In February 2023, feasibility study for the metrolite project was commissioned by the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) – This metrolite, is it related to the light rail project proposed? yes, it is part of a separate section with the word removed to avoid confusion
- Between late 2023 and early 2024, feasibility reports submitted by the CMRL suggested going ahead with two of the three planned extensions spanning – the two of three being of the aforementioned second phase extension? yes and elaborated
- I think truthfully the future plans section could be expanded and rewritten a bit more. There seems to be some gaps, especially when a reassessment implied a plan was cancelled or delayed. I would also be more precise in stating which extensions are part of which lines too. Have merged it with second phase as a part of extension and re-organized with the corresponding information w.r.t. the respective lines.
Subsequent sections
[edit]- I suggest merging the "network" section under "infrastructure". Also the information there is repetitive and could go into the history section. Just keep:
As of March 2024, the operational network consists of two colour-coded lines covering a length of 54.1 km (33.6 mi).
- In fact, move it to be the first subsection, and the stations subsection right after. Followed by rolling stocks and depot.
- The financing part could be merged into the respective parts of the history as well.
- A total of 40 stations are operational along the two lines of the Phase 1 with 22 underground stations. –
A total of 40 stations, 22 of which are underground, are operational on the two existing lines of Phase 1.
- The incidents section is a bit trivial, but I would move to the history portion since it covers their construction. In the larger scope of the metro page, I would have shifted them to their respective station/line pages.
Did a little more copyedits on my part. Putting the article on hold as the above issues are addressed.--ZKang123 (talk) 07:01, 8 July 2024 (UTC)
