From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gian Paolo Chiti (born 21 January 1939 in Rome) is an Italian composer and pianist.

Biography

[edit]

Gian Paolo Chiti began his music studies at the age of four, focusing on piano, violin, and composition. He gained attention as a child prodigy and studied with Armando Renzi before entering the prestigious Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome at the age of ten.[1] His teachers included Carlo Zecchi, Arturo Bonucci, and Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (private and masterclass studies). Chiti won prizes in competitions such as Treviso and the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in 1960.[2]

Chiti has had a dual career as both a composer and a concert pianist. He often performed alongside his late wife, mezzo-soprano Patricia Adkins Chiti, who was the founder of the Adkins-Chiti Women in Music Foundation. His compositions include a wide range of works for film and television, as well as numerous pieces for concerts and festivals in Italy and abroad. These have been featured in events like the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, the Venice Biennale, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Lutosławski Festival.[2]

Since 1984, Chiti has served as the Director of the Composition Department at the Conservatorio of Santa Cecilia in Rome. He is also a member of the Italian National Committee for Dance and serves on the faculty boards of several universities.[2]
