- Die Waverley Line (auch als Waverley Route oder Borders Railway bezeichnet) ist eine Eisenbahnstrecke in Schottland. Sie verläuft von Edinburgh durch die Scottish Borders nach Carlisle im Norden Englands. Erbaut wurde die Strecke zwischen 1849 und 1862 von der North British Railway. Ihren Namen erhielt sie nach dem Roman Waverley von Sir Walter Scott. Ab 1921 wurde sie von der London and North Eastern Railway betrieben, ab 1948 von British Railways. Im Zuge der umfangreichen Streckenstilllegungen während der als Beeching Axe bekannten Umstrukturierung des britischen Eisenbahnnetzes in den 1960er Jahren wurde die Strecke trotz erheblicher öffentlicher Proteste stillgelegt. Das Schottische Parlament beschloss 2006 den Wiederaufbau des nördlichen Abschnitts der Strecke von Edinburgh bis Tweedbank, einem Vorort von Galashiels, für den Personenverkehr. Die Bauarbeiten für die neue Borders Railway begannen im November 2012. Im Februar 2015 verlegten die beteiligten Baufirmen die letzten Gleise. Der Personenverkehr wurde am 6. September 2015 aufgenommen, die offizielle Eröffnung der Strecke durch Königin Elisabeth II. folgte am 9. September. (de)
