The North Carolina Zoo, America's first state-supported zoo, is located in the Uwharries region. The Caraway Mountains, a segment of the Uwharries, are located in western Randolph County, west of Asheboro.

Ursprünglich gipfelten die Uwharries 6000 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel, durch die Erosion wurden sie auf eine Höhe von 341 Metern abgetragen, der höchste Punkt des Gebirgszuges ist der High Rock Mountain im südwestlichen Davidson County. Durch die Verschiebung der Kontinentalplatten hob sich der Meeresboden vor der östlichen Küste, bis das ursprünglich an der Küste gelegene Gebirge in der Piedmont Region 250 Kilometer weit ins Landesinnere North Carolina verschoben war. In dem Gebiet der Uwharrie Mountains liegt das Naturschutzgebiet Uwharrie National Forest und der State Park. Einstmals vollständig für Farmland und Holzgewinnung gerodet, wurden die Uwharries 1961 durch den Präsidenten John F. Kennedy als unter Schutz gestellt. Die Wälder haben sich inzwischen erholt und in dem Gebiet finden sich heute etliche Freizeiteinrichtungen, indianische Ausgrabungsstätten und eine vielfältige Tier- und Pflanzenwelt. Die Entdeckung von Gold im Jahre 1799 im Cabarrus County in der nahe gelegenen Reed Gold Mine führte zu Amerikas erstem Goldrausch. Der North Carolina Zoo, der erste staatlich unterstützte Zoo, liegt in der Uwharrie-Region. The Uwharries were once a coastal mountain range; isostasy has slowly raised the eastern seabed until today they lie in the Piedmont of North Carolina over 150 miles (240 km) from the coast. Formed approximately 500 million years ago by accretion along the Gondwanan tectonic plate, they are thought to have once peaked at some 20,000 feet (6,100 m), before eroding to a maximum of just over 1,100 feet (340 m). The range's high point is High Rock Mountain (1,188 feet (362 m) as measured by the NC Geodetic Survey), in southwestern Davidson County. The Uwharrie lie within the Southeastern mixed forests ecoregion. They give their name to the Uwharrie National Forest. Once entirely cleared for timber and farmland, the mountains were designated a U.S. National Forest in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy. The woodlands have since returned, providing a haven for a diversity of wildlife, recreational facilities, and numerous Native American archeological sites.
