- Ter Heijde is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Westland, and lies about 6 km southwest of The Hague. The area "Ter Heijde", which also includes the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 690, mostly elderly people. Ter Heijde is a popular beach-resort. It has a lifeboat station of the KNRM, the Dutch equivalent of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Ter Heijde is known for the Battle of Ter Heijde (also known as The Battle of Scheveningen). This was the final battle, in 1653, of the First Anglo-Dutch War, which saw the death of Admiral Maarten Tromp. In remembrance of the battle there is a monument in the village. In 2003, 350 years after the battle, the Tromp-festival was held. In 1677 Prince William of Orange and his recently married wife Mary (the future King William III and Queen Mary II of England) were forced to land at Ter Heijde, Rotterdam being ice bound. (en)
- Ter Heijde, soms ook wel Ter Heijde aan Zee genoemd, is een dorp in de gemeente Westland, in de Nederlandse provincie Zuid-Holland. In Ter Heijde wonen 735 mensen (2021). Het dorp is bekend door de voor de kust gevoerde zeeslag tussen de Nederlandse en Engelse vloot, waarbij Maarten Tromp sneuvelde (10 augustus 1653). Ter nagedachtenis staat in Ter Heijde een monument, bestaande uit twee kanonnen. In 2003 werd ter nagedachtenis aan de dood van admiraal Tromp het Trompfestival gehouden, wat de gemeente Monster en later de gemeente Westland duur kwam te staan door te weinig inkomsten. In Ter Heijde was tot voor kort de kustverdediging van Nederland het zwakst. Op sommige plaatsen bestond de gehele verdediging uit slechts één duinenrij. In 2010 is een zanddijk aangebracht tegen het bestaande duin aan de zeezijde, en is het strand verbreed. De voorheen zo karakteristiek Delflandse hoofden zijn onder het zand verdwenen. Als onderdeel van het bestaande plan tot kustverdediging is in 2011 ter hoogte van de watertoren de zandmotor DeltaDuin aangelegd. Dit is een groot schiereiland van opgespoten zand, dat door stroming en wind geleidelijk langs de kust verspreid zal worden. (nl)
