- Norma CIPW či CIPW klasifikace je klasifikace magmatických hornin, která je založena na chemickém složení získávaném matematickým přepočtem relativního zastoupení normativních (vybraných) minerálů. Norma CIPW má své pojmenování po čtveřici geologů, kteří jí jako první sestavili a používali. Byli to Cross, Iddings, Pirsson a Washington. (cs)
- Als modaler Mineralbestand eines Gesteins wird das relative Verhältnis der in ihm auftretenden Minerale bezeichnet. Er wird gewöhnlich in Volumenprozent (Vol.-%) angegeben, seltener in Gewichtsprozent (Gew.-%). Der modale Mineralbestand ist eine beschreibende petrographische Kenngröße eines Gesteins und wird durch mikroskopisches Auszählen von Gesteinsdünnschliffen mit Hilfe eines ermittelt. Eine Abschätzung kann auch schon durch Betrachtung eines Handstücks mit Hilfe einer Handlupe im Gelände erfolgen, wobei die Untersuchung an einer frischen Bruchstelle ohne Verwitterungseinflüsse erfolgen sollte. Im Gegensatz zum normativen Mineralbestand ist der modale Mineralbestand eine reelle Eigenschaft eines Gesteins und bezieht sich auf die tatsächlich in ihm auftretenden Minerale. Für viele Gesteinsarten, insbesondere für grobkörnige magmatische Gesteine, aber auch für zahlreiche Gesteine metamorphen und sedimentären Ursprungs, ist der modale Mineralbestand ein wichtiges Kriterium zur Klassifikation z. B. im Streckeisendiagramm. (de)
- Normative mineralogy is a calculation of the composition of a rock sample that estimates the idealised mineralogy of a rock based on a quantitative chemical analysis according to the principles of geochemistry. Normative mineral calculations can be achieved via either the CIPW Norm or the Barth-Niggli Norm (also known as the Cation Norm). Normative calculations are used to produce an idealised mineralogy of a crystallized melt. First, a rock is chemically analysed to determine the elemental constituents. Results of the chemical analysis traditionally are expressed as oxides (e.g., weight percent Mg is expressed as weight percent MgO). The normative mineralogy of the rock then is calculated, based upon assumptions about the order of mineral formation and known phase relationships of rocks and minerals, and using simplified mineral formulas. The calculated mineralogy can be used to assess concepts such as silica saturation of melts. Because the normative calculation is essentially a computation, it can be achieved via computer programs.
