- La NASCAR Cup Series est la plus grande compétition automobile organisée depuis 1949 aux États-Unis par la National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). La compétition était initialement dénommée Grand National. Dès 1971, elle s'est ouverte au sponsoring. Elle est tout d'abord renommée Winston Cup Series jusqu'en 2003 (le sponsor principal était la société de tabac R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company et son siège se situait à Winston-Salem en Caroline du Nord). La société Nextel Communications, Inc. reprend le sponsoring de 2004 à 2007 et l'événement est renommé Nextel Cup Series. Cette société est rachetée en 2008 par la société de télécommunication Sprint modifiant à nouveau le nom en Sprint Cup Series. Cette dénomination perdure jusqu'en fin de saison 2016. Le championnat se base sur un système de points. Depuis 2018, chaque course est divisée en trois segments ; des points sont attribués en fonction de la place obtenue en fin des segments. Ceux-ci sont au nombre de trois. Les deux premiers attribuent des points aux dix premiers pilotes tandis que le troisième segment (clôturant la course) attribue des points à l'ensemble des pilotes. Depuis 2018, les « playoffs » ont remplacé le « Chase » et le nombre de tours parcourus en tête de la course ne rapporte plus de point. La saison est divisée en deux périodes :
* Les vingt-six premières courses servent à sélectionner seize pilotes (principalement sur base du nombre de courses gagnées). Ceux-ci sont ensuite classés également en fonction de ce critère.
* Les dix dernières courses : ces seize pilotes vont se battre entre eux pour le sacre. Le même nombre de points leur est attribué avant la première course. À ce nombre de points est ajouté un bonus en fonction du nombre de courses gagnées pendant la première partie de saison. Cette seconde partie était dénommée la Chase for the Cup (ou Chase que l'on peut traduire par la chasse à la coupe) . Depuis 2018 on parle de « Playoffs ». Les Series sont très implantées dans le Sud-Est des États-Unis, avec la moitié des courses s'y déroulant. Les autres courses sont réparties sur le reste des États-Unis. - The NASCAR Cup Series is the top racing series of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR). The series began in 1949 as the Strictly Stock Division, and from 1950 to 1970 it was known as the Grand National Division. In 1971, when the series began leasing its naming rights to the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, it was referred to as the NASCAR Winston Cup Series (1971–2003). A similar deal was made with Nextel in 2003, and it became the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series (2004–2007). Sprint acquired Nextel in 2005, and in 2008 the series was renamed the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (2008–2016). In December 2016, it was announced that Monster Energy would become the new title sponsor, and the series was renamed the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (2017–2019). In 2019, NASCAR rejected Monster's offer to extend the current naming rights deal beyond the end of the season. NASCAR subsequently announced its move to a new tiered sponsorship model beginning with the 2020 season similar to other US based professional sports leagues, where it was simply known as the NASCAR Cup Series, with the sponsors of the series being called Premier Partners. The four Premier Partners are Busch Beer, Coca-Cola, GEICO, and Xfinity. The championship is determined by a points system, with points being awarded according to finish placement and number of laps led. The season is divided into two segments. After the first 26 races, 16 drivers, selected primarily on the basis of wins during the first 26 races, are seeded based on their total number of wins. They compete in the last ten races, where the difference in points is greatly minimized. This is called the NASCAR playoffs. The series holds strong roots in the Southeastern United States, with about half of the races in the 36-race season being held in that region. As of 2020 the schedule includes tracks from around the United States. Regular season races were previously held in Canada, and exhibition races were held in Japan and Australia. The Daytona 500, the most prestigious race, had a television audience of about 9.17 million U.S. viewers in 2019. Cup Series cars are unique in automobile racing. The engines are powerful enough to reach speeds of over 200 mph (320 km/h), but their weight coupled with a relatively simple aerodynamic package (based on the body styles of cars currently available for retail sale in the United States) make for poor handling. - La NASCAR Cup Series è il più importante campionato automobilistico organizzato, gestito e di proprietà della "National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing" (NASCAR). In origine la serie si chiamava "Strictly Stock Series" (1949) e poi "Grand National Series" (1950–1970). Quando la NASCAR iniziò ad affittare i diritti sul nome della serie alla R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company la serie venne chiamata "Winston Cup Series" (1971–2003). Quando lo stesso contratto venne stipulato con la Sprint Nextel Corporation la serie diventò "NEXTEL Cup Series" (2004–2007). Dal 2008 la NEXTEL decise di promuovere il marchio Sprint, di sua proprietà, ed alla serie venne attribuito il nome di "Sprint Cup Series".Nel Dicembre 2016 fu annunciato che dal 2017 la serie avrebbe preso la denominazione di "Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series".
