The Sword of the Six Sages is a recurring Item and Object in The Legend of Zelda series.[1] The Sword of the Six Sages goes unnamed in Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U.
Description[]
The Sword of the Six Sages is a two-handed, totally white sword. Its guard is ornately crafted and shaped, and the handle has distinct ridges, to provide its wielder with a stronger grip. Ganondorf is seen with a scabbard for the sword, but it is considerably cruder in design and is wrapped in bandages. The Sage of Water was able to levitate it by thought alone, as shown in his botched execution of Ganondorf. The King of Evil can freely switch between using one hand or two in battle, presumably by virtue of his unnatural strength. Ganondorf also implies that, at least during the time he wielded it, the Sword of the Six Sages was capable of umbrakinetic abilities.[2]
Location and Uses[]
Twilight Princess[]
Prior to the events of Twilight Princess, the six Sages forged the Sword of the Six Sages to execute the Demon King, Ganondorf, due to the Hero of Time warning Princess Zelda about Ganondorf's ultimate plan after the conclusion of Ocarina of Time.[1] When this capital punishment took place, the six Sages gathered at the Mirror Chamber with Ganondorf in chains. The Sage of Water[citation needed] attempted to execute Ganondorf by thrusting the Sword of the Six Sages directly into his chest, likely hitting vital organs. This weapon, however, though it contains the power of light, is apparently not as effective as the Master Sword, as the Triforce of Power within Ganondorf kept him alive, allowing him to break free from his chains, and then kills the Sage of Water, before withdrawing the sword from his body. The other Sages promptly banish Ganondorf to the Twilight Realm, but also unintentionally send the Sword of the Six Sages there in the process, allowing Ganondorf to collect the sword and keep it for himself; at some point, he crafted a scabbard for the sword and took to carrying it as a trophy. While the sword indeed failed to kill Ganondorf, it did inflict a glowing wound on him that would not heal, which later acts as a major weak point that is also present on Dark Beast Ganon. Ganondorf uses the Sword of the Six Sages for his final battle with Link, the Hero of Twilight, denouncing the sword for its origin and initial purpose, but therefore wishing to blot out the light forever with it.[2] Ganondorf ultimately loses the duel, as Link repeatedly overpowers him using the Hidden Skills taught by the Hero's Spirit (Hero of Time) and plunges the Master Sword directly into his wound, killing the villain slowly. Link himself never wields the Sword of the Six Sages in Twilight Princess.
Breath of the Wild[]
The Sword of the Six Sages appears in Breath of the Wild as an exclusive amiibo Item. It has a rare chance of appearing in a Treasure Chest after scanning the Super Smash Bros. series Ganondorf amiibo with the amiibo Rune, although only after Link has tamed at least one of the Divine Beasts. The Sword of the Six Sages functions as a two-handed Weapon, and its description refers to it as a longsword.[1] Additionally, its sheath is the same one used by Ganondorf in Twilight Princess. It shines with a holy luster that causes it to glow in dark areas such as the Thyphlo Ruins. Link can acquire replacements via using the Ganondorf amiibo if it breaks or if it is lost.
Being made of metal, the Sword of the Six Sages will conduct Electricity and attract Lightning if it is equipped during a Thunderstorm. It will also sink if dropped in Water, but it can be picked back up and manipulated using the Magnesis Rune. If it is exposed to Fire or a Scorching Climate, it will not burn as wooden Weapons do.
Tears of the Kingdom[]
A variation of the Sword of the Six Sages returns in Tears of the Kingdom in the form of the Dusk Claymore. It has a slightly lower base attack of 38, but it can be fused with materials to boost its offensive power. It is found at the Thyphlo Ruins after completing all quests there, which requires the powers of the first four Sages. If lost or broken, it can be bought back from Barganing Statues in the Depths using Poes.
Other Appearances[]
Super Smash Bros. Series[]
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Ganondorf shows the Sword during one of his taunts. In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, Ganondorf shows the Sword as a taunt once again. He can also attack with it by using the Warlock Blade, a custom neutral special move that replaces the Warlock Punch.
Trivia[]
- While Ganondorf is wielding the sword in Twilight Princess, the color changes from white to a glowing red; while this may be just due to the lighting, its similar coloration in Super Smash Bros. Brawl could mean the color change is intentional.
