The Fierce Deity Mask,(BotW)[1] also known as the Fierce Deity's Mask,(MM | HW)[2][note 1] is a powerful recurring Item in The Legend of Zelda series.

Location and Uses[]

Majora's Mask[]

The Fierce Deity's Mask is one of five Masks that transform Link when worn. It transforms Link into Fierce Deity Link, where the young Hero of Time has a unique, very tall and mysterious form resembling his adult self from Ocarina of Time and shares the same voice, and also transforms his sword into the Fierce Deity Sword, a very large sword in the shape of a helix. In this incredibly powerful form, his attack power and range are greatly increased (roughly the same as the Great Fairy's Sword), and his mighty sword can release Sword Beams at the cost of Magic. When obtained, its own dark powers are suggested to be just as dangerous as Majora's Mask itself.[3][4]

MM Fierce Deity Transformation

Link transforming into the infamous Fierce Deity in Majora's Mask

Link can obtain the Fierce Deity's Mask by trading all of the twenty non-transformation Masks (including the Giant's Mask) to the four Moon Children. Since the Deku Mask, Goron Mask, and the Zora Mask cannot be traded, Link must have in his possession all of the other Masks before being able to receive the Fierce Deity's Mask. Once this has been done, the young hero obtains the Mask from the child wearing Majora's Mask as a reward once it notices the rest of his masks are gone. He gives him the powerful Mask to the hero so that the two of them can "play" together. The Fierce Deity's Mask is said to possess the merits of all Masks,[5] as well as the memories of all the people of Termina.[6]

Unlike the other transformation Masks, the Fierce Deity's Mask can only be used during Boss battles including Majora's Mask,[4] and, in Majora's Mask 3D, Fishing Holes. However, its combat capabilities are disabled inside Fishing Holes, and the Fishing Hole Men will forbid Link from leaving while wearing it.[7]

Breath of the Wild[]

The Fierce Deity Mask is a piece of Armor in Breath of the Wild. It is obtained by scanning the Majora's Mask Link amiibo with the amiibo (Rune) Rune. According to its description, the Fierce Deity Mask is the same Mask as the one worn by Link in the Era of the Hero of Time, although it no longer retains its powers that it once had.[8] When worn, the Fierce Deity Mask provides one level of Attack Up. Like the Majora's Mask in-game, the eyes of the Fierce Deity Mask glow, allowing them to be seen in dark areas such as the Thyphlo Ruins. The Fierce Deity Mask can be enhanced by a Great Fairy, though it cannot be Dyed at the Kochi Dye Shop. The Fierce Deity Mask, alongside the Fierce Deity Armor and Fierce Deity Boots, compose the Fierce Deity Set.

Other Appearances[]

Hyrule Warriors[]

The Fierce Deity Mask appears as a type of Badge in the Bazaar in Hyrule Warriors. It increases the amount of Special Attack meters when crafted, up to three bars.

In the Majora's Mask DLC Pack, Young Link's Mask Weapon class is modeled after the Fierce Deity Mask. While Young Link primarily uses the Kokiri Sword in battle, he can temporarily transform into Fierce Deity Link as part of his Focus Spirit attack with the Mask, as well briefly during his Special Attack. While in Focus Spirit, Young Link's sword transforms into the Fierce Deity Sword, and his attack power, speed and range is heightened for the duration of the Focus Spirit. As Young Link is able to play the Ocarina of Time to empty his Special Attack meter and fill his Magic Gauge, it is possible for Young Link to stay in his Focus Spirit for lengthy periods of time. The Mask is of the Darkness element.

The Mask has two additional weapon tiers - the Furious Deity Mask, which has a purple aura, and the Vengeful Deity Mask, which has a red aura. These different variations transforms Young Link's sword into other swords while in Focus Spirit.

Trivia[]

  • Alongside the Majora's Mask, the Fierce Deity's Mask is often considered by fans as the most notorious Mask to ever appear in The Legend of Zelda series.
  • Despite not actually being required to complete Majora's Mask, the Hero of Time obtaining the Fierce Deity's Mask and defeating Majora as the Fierce Deity form is stated to be canon according to Hyrule Historia.[9]
  • In the Japanese text of the game, the child wearing Majora's Mask specifically states that he wants to play tag with Link. This is a play on words as the Japanese text states that the Fierce Deity's Mask is a mask an oni (a type of Japanese ogre) wears, and the Japanese name for tag is "pretending to be an oni."
    • Majora's Mask calling this mask an oni and deliberately giving it to Link for a game of tag also occurs in Majora's Mask (Himekawa). Although Link went with the flow of Majora's words, as Fierce Deity Link, he utterly says to the villain during the final showdown that he has no time for games, before easily destroying it.
  • In the original N64 version of Majora's Mask, when the Fierce Deity's Mask is first obtained after trading all 20 non-transformation Masks, a programming bug prevents the use of the other transformation Masks in the final battle against Majora (but not in subsequent fights).[10] This was fixed in Majora's Mask 3D.[11]
    MM Link Mask Concept

The Link Mask in the beta version of Majora's Mask

  • Early in development, a Mask designed to transform Link into his adult self was meant to appear in the game, but was later scrapped and likely replaced by the Fierce Deity's Mask.[citation needed] This may be due to the fact that the Hero of Time, in spite of being a child in-game, can now use the items that only Adult Link previously could in Ocarina of Time, rendering this planned mask useless. In Hyrule Historia, the Majora's Mask section contains concept art of Adult Link, confirming that Link as an adult was originally going to appear at one point during the game's development. This is supported by Fierce Deity Link sharing Adult Link's voice and the fact the model was based on Link carrying the Biggoron's Sword.
    MM Link Mask Model

The model of the cut Link Mask in the game's files

    • Inside the game's code, a textured model of the Link Mask can be found. Aside from the originally planned transformation into his adult self, it is possible that it was also used to turn Link back into his Hylian form when wearing other transformation Masks, as concept art in Hyrule Historia shows Deku Link wearing a similar Mask.
  • Through a glitch, it is possible to use the Fierce Deity's Mask almost anywhere in Termina without being in boss rooms.
