The Red Ring is a recurring item in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]

Mainline appearances[]

The Legend of Zelda[]

The Legend of Zelda Manual Description
The Legend of Zelda logo
Blue and red rings
The blue ring reduces the damage inflicted by the enemy by half, and the red ring reduces damage to one quarter.

In The Legend of Zelda, the Red Ring is located in the final Dungeon, Level-9, regardless of the first or Second Quest. Aside from giving Link a red tunic, the Red Ring makes it so that he takes a quarter of the amount of damage he would normally, and half the amount of damage with the Blue Ring equipped, making the young hero significantly more durable than at the start of the game.[3] If Link obtains the Red Ring while having the Blue Ring equipped, it will replace the Blue Ring as an upgrade.

Due to the graphical limitations of the NES, certain characters, items, and enemies share the same color palette with Link's tunic and will also appear red while Link has this item equipped, such as Princess Zelda's dress, Arrows, the Raft, and even the whiskers of a Pols Voice.

Oracle of Seasons[]

In Oracle of Seasons, the Red Ring can be obtained from an Old Man in North Horon after defeating all four Golden Monsters in Holodrum. The Magic Ring can be appraised at Vasu Jewelers for 20 Rupees. When worn, it doubles Sword damage.[2]

Oracle of Ages[]

In Oracle of Ages, the Red Ring can be transferred from Oracle of Seasons by talking to either the Blue or Red Snake.

Spinoff appearances[]

Hyrule Warriors[]

Main article: Ring

In Hyrule Warriors, the Red Ring appears as Wizzro's second level Ring. An 8-Bit Red Ring also appears as Midna's star level Shackle. Throughout the game's Legend Mode, Wizzro uses the Red Ring form of his weapon. His Ring is a cursed artifact from which he manifests; it sucks the souls from its wearers, which are combined within the Ring to become Wizzro.[4]

Trivia[]

  • As the Red Ring can only be acquired very late in The Legend of Zelda in both the main and Second Quest, as opposed to the Blue Ring, it is met with criticism among fans of the series.
  • As Link's eyes in The Legend of Zelda use the palette of his tunic, they will also appear red when the Red Ring is equipped.
  • The Red Mail in A Link to the Past is based on the effects of the Red Ring, while red tunics later in the franchise such as the Goron Tunic in Ocarina of Time serve different purposes including protection against fire damage.
