Summary: The inverse problem of controlling nonstationary surface cooling of steel samples with the purpose of preparing a layer with present hardness variations over the layer thickness is formulated. The corresponding mathematical experiment is performed using regularizing operators. The uniqueness of the solution to the control problem is discussed.
