Summary: In the performance evaluation of the “Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)” a fundamental and difficult question arises: is it possible to limit the loss of messages by using buffers? For computing such a loss, an algorithm is stated: this algorithm is explicit, fast and needs only a few memory. It rests upon a decomposition theorem for some \(M\)-matrices.
