Author’s abstract: This paper is a survey of results on the problem of minimizing the “effects” of transmission errors when linearly ordered data is communicated over a binary symmetric channel. Of particular interest is the contrast between cases with exponent \(r=1\) or (infinity), where the solutions are purely combinatorial, and \(r=2\), where the solution involves dyadic harmonic analysis.
