Summary: The authors propose a variational approach to the nonideal contact problem between thin elastic layers. They investigate the dual nature of the sandwich-type structure energy functional with constraints on boundaries between the layers, and use a layer \(\{m,n\}\)-approximation in order to derive a symmetric system of variational inequalities. A numerical example is presented.
