Chapman & Hall/CRC Texts in Statistical Science Series. Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press (ISBN 978-1-4987-2448-7/hbk+ebook; 978-1-4987-2449-4/ebook). xxvi, 551 p. (2017).
Modern Data Science with R is a comprehensive textbook about data. Within 17 chapters organised in three parts, as well as six appendices, it provides the reader with practical information, and guides him/her on how to use statistics, computer science, and mathematics in order to extract meaningful information from complex and/or large sets of data. The first part of the book provides an introduction to data science and data visualisation and management. The second part of the book deals with modelling and statistical analyses. The third part of the book addresses more advanced topics such as databases, big data, etc. The appendices, finally, deal with the software packages used along the examples of the book, outline regression analysis, and provide information on key aspects of algorithmic thinking, reproducible thinking and how to set up a database server. The book features numerous examples illustrating all the exposed subjects, and exercises, allowing the reader to practice the newly obtained knowledge. It is thus an excellent “tool” for data science-related courses addressed to students with some background in statistics. It can also be useful to researchers and analysts who wish to develop and/or improve their data science skills.
