The book is the outcome of the lectures delivered by the different mathematicians of leading mathematical department of different Universities in the workshop for chairs of different mathematics department held in July, 2002 in Towsen, Maryland and in June, 2003 in Reston Virginia. This volume contains papers over a wide variety of topics that will be of interest to chair struggling with the many demands on the chair and the various roles that person must play. The book is divided mainly into three parts.
Part I: The wisdom of practice. It is divided into four main sub-sections (a) The chairs’ perspective, (b) The presidents’ perspective, (c) The perspective of vice-president, provosts and deans, (d) The perspective of legal counsel.
Part II is under the heading “Case studies”. It is divided into eight sub-sections, (i) Students, (ii) Faculty: dealing with troublesome individuals, (iii) Faculty: part-time and temporary faculty, (iv) Faculty, personnel action, (v) Curriculum, (vi) Leadership, (vii) Campus politics, (viii) Legal concerns.
Part III is under the heading “Current issues in mathematical sciences departments”, which is divided into four parts, (i) Student, (ii) Curricula and programs, (iii) Faculty issues, (iv) Finances.
Each section is well-written and provides insights and advice from mathematical science department chairs and administrators. The focal point is on leadership rather than the technical details of management.
The books is a valuable dodument for those are chairs or for those who expect or aim to be a mathematical science department chairs.
