Changing core mathematics. (English) Zbl 1034.00001
MAA Notes 61. Washington, DC: Mathematical Association of America (MAA) (ISBN 0-88385-172-5/pbk). xi, 181 p. (2002).
The genesis of this book was an interdisciplinary workshop held at the United States Military Academy where around 40 mathematicians, engineers, and physical scientists analysed the future role of undergraduate mathematics. It is discussed how core mathematics (i.e. the first two years of instruction) should change over the next five to ten years. The authors detail the interdisciplinary needs of students and make available a basis for the construction of the core mathematics curriculum.
Part I of the book contains an essentially historical development of core mathematics and its teaching, future considerations, and the description of an integrated program. Part 2 includes a lot of articles written by curricular experts who participated in the workshop.
These statements are helpful for the conceptions and arrangements of the curricula.
